India's insurance industry is poised for massive expansion and could more than double from Rs 11 lakh crore in 2024 to Rs 25 lakh crore by 2030, according to a new report launched by the Insurance Brokers Association of India (IBAI) in collaboration with McKinsey & Company. The report was unveiled during IBAI's 24th Foundation Day in Mumbai by Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan. It also added that India's insurance penetration could accelerate to 5% from 3.7%, bringing it closer to the global average of 6.8%. The report, titled 'Leading the Path to Insurance for All: Broker of the Future', outlines the strategic role brokers can play in achieving this growth and supporting the government's vision of 'Insurance for All by 2047'. It projects insurance penetration to rise from 3.7% to 5% by 2030, closing in on the global average of 6.8%. In the retail segment, among affluent and ultra-high-net-worth and high-net-worth customers (UHNI and HNIs are individuals with household personal financial assets over INR 8.5 crore) customers, 60% customers believe that their ideal life insurance cover should be 10 times their salary, yet only 30% have this cover, added the report. Similarly, in the institutional segment, 70 percent micro and small enterprises purchase insurance because of regulatory or client mandates. • Bridging India's 91% protection gap (one of the highest globally), remains critical – especially for mass-market customers and SMEs, which are the most vulnerable to losses from risk events o Despite being the world's fourth largest economy, India has lower insurance penetration when compared to developed economies. Only 1 in 2 Indians (above the age of 18 years) has life insurance, and 2 in 5 Indians has health insurance. This number drops to 1 in 4, if government schemes are excluded. o While life insurance penetration is at 2.8%, there is a significant protection gap due to limited adoption of pure term protection. o While 65% of India's population lives in rural areas and contributes around 45% of the country's GDP, only about 2% of life insurance branches are present in rural regions, highlighting a significant access gap • Retail and SME segments will be the twin engines of growth o Gross written premiums (GWP) in the retail segment have the potential to double and reach an opportunity of up to Rs 21 lakh crore, across life and non-life insurance in 2030. The mass-market segment is poised to contribute approximately 45% of the premium pool. This segment is volume-driven and although average ticket sizes remain low, its scale and growing awareness offer a meaningful opportunity despite the price sensitivity. o Similarly, non-life GWP driven by the institutional segment has the potential to nearly triple to Rs 2.8 lakh crore by 2030. Health and property lines of business will drive around 80% of institutional premiums. India has 6 crore SMEs with less than 5% having any insurance. This segment contributes only about 10% of the premium pools today but is expected to grow the fastest i.e. 4 to 5 times by 2030. Mr. Narendra Bharindwal, President, Insurance Brokers Association of India said, 'India's insurance sector is entering a new era of opportunity, with the potential to more than double by 2030. The growth, however, needs to be secured by fast focus on bridging the massive 91% protection gap that exists in the country. At this moment, brokers have a strategic inflection point. Moving away from merely intermediaries, brokers are becoming trusted advisors that will translate awareness into action and build trust in underserved markets. Regulations permitting, with access to growth capital and investments in digital capabilities, brokers would be able to scale, drive inclusion, and form the bedrock of India's journey toward 'Insurance for All' by 2047. AI agents are here: What they are capable of and where things can go wrong

We are entering the third phase of generative AI. First came the chatbots, followed by the assistants. Now we are beginning to see agents: systems that aspire to greater autonomy and can work in 'teams' or use tools to accomplish complex tasks. The latest hot product is OpenAI's ChatGPT agent. This combines two pre-existing products (Operator and Deep Research) into a single more powerful system which, according to the developer, 'thinks and acts'. These new systems represent a step up from earlier AI tools. Knowing how they work and what they can do – as well as their drawbacks and risks – is rapidly becoming essential. From chatbots to agents ChatGPT launched the chatbot era in November 2022, but despite its huge popularity the conversational interface limited what could be done with the technology. Enter the AI assistant, or copilot. These are systems built on top of the same large language models that power generative AI chatbots, only now designed to carry out tasks with human instruction and supervision. Agents are another step up. They are intended to pursue goals (rather than just complete tasks) with varying degrees of autonomy, supported by more advanced capabilities such as reasoning and memory. Multiple AI agent systems may be able to work together, communicating with each other to plan, schedule, decide and coordinate to solve complex problems. Agents are also 'tool users' as they can also call on software tools for specialised tasks – things such as web browsers, spreadsheets, payment systems and more. A year of rapid development Agentic AI has felt imminent since late last year. A big moment came last October, when Anthropic gave its Claude chatbot the ability to interact with a computer in much the same way a human does. This system could search multiple data sources, find relevant information and submit online forms. Other AI developers were quick to follow. OpenAI released a web browsing agent named Operator, Microsoft announced Copilot agents, and we saw the launch of Google's Vertex AI and Meta's Llama agents. Earlier this year, the Chinese startup Monica demonstrated its Manus AI agent buying real estate and converting lecture recordings into summary notes. Another Chinese startup, Genspark, released a search engine agent that returns a single-page overview (similar to what Google does now) with embedded links to online tasks such as finding the best shopping deals. Another startup, Cluely, offers a somewhat unhinged 'cheat at anything' agent that has gained attention but is yet to deliver meaningful results. Not all agents are made for general-purpose activity. Some are specialised for particular areas. Coding and software engineering are at the vanguard here, with Microsoft's Copilot coding agent and OpenAI's Codex among the frontrunners. These agents can independently write, evaluate and commit code, while also assessing human-written code for errors and performance lags. Search, summarisation and more One core strength of generative AI models is search and summarisation. Agents can use this to carry out research tasks that might take a human expert days to complete. OpenAI's Deep Research tackles complex tasks using multi-step online research. Google's AI 'co-scientist' is a more sophisticated multi-agent system that aims to help scientists generate new ideas and research proposals. Agents can do more – and get more wrong Despite the hype, AI agents come loaded with caveats. Both Anthropic and OpenAI, for example, prescribe active human supervision to minimise errors and risks. OpenAI also says its ChatGPT agent is 'high risk' due to potential for assisting in the creation of biological and chemical weapons. However, the company has not published the data behind this claim so it is difficult to judge. But the kind of risks agents may pose in real-world situations are shown by Anthropic's Project Vend. Vend assigned an AI agent to run a staff vending machine as a small business – and the project disintegrated into hilarious yet shocking hallucinations and a fridge full of tungsten cubes instead of food. In another cautionary tale, a coding agent deleted a developer's entire database, later saying it had 'panicked'. Agents in the office Nevertheless, agents are already finding practical applications. In 2024, Telstra heavily deployed Microsoft copilot subscriptions. The company says AI-generated meeting summaries and content drafts save staff an average of 1–2 hours per week. Many large enterprises are pursuing similar strategies. Smaller companies too are experimenting with agents, such as Canberra-based construction firm Geocon's use of an interactive AI agent to manage defects in its apartment developments. Human and other costs At present, the main risk from agents is technological displacement. As agents improve, they may replace human workers across many sectors and types of work. At the same time, agent use may also accelerate the decline of entry-level white-collar jobs. People who use AI agents are also at risk. They may rely too much on the AI, offloading important cognitive tasks. And without proper supervision and guardrails, hallucinations, cyberattacks and compounding errors can very quickly derail an agent from its task and goals into causing harm, loss and injury. The true costs are also unclear. All generative AI systems use a lot of energy, which will in turn affect the price of using agents – especially for more complex tasks. Learn about agents – and build your own Despite these ongoing concerns, we can expect AI agents will become more capable and more present in our workplaces and daily lives. It's not a bad idea to start using (and perhaps building) agents yourself, and understanding their strengths, risks and limitations. For the average user, agents are most accessible through Microsoft copilot studio. This comes with inbuilt safeguards, governance and an agent store for common tasks. For the more ambitious, you can build your own AI agent with just five lines of code using the Langchain framework.

Those affected include a large number of mid-to-senior-level professionals, although some junior-level staff have also been impacted, especially those who have been on the bench for an extended period. According to Reuters, TCS, the most profitable company in the Tata Group, is going through a major restructuring phase as it expands into new markets, adopts fresh technologies, and leans into AI integration. As part of this shift, around 12,200 employees will lose their jobs, even as the company insists it's doing everything possible to minimise disruption. 'This transition is being planned with due care to ensure there is no impact on service delivery to our clients,' the company said, reports Reuters. The layoffs won't be geography or domain-specific and will be concluded over the next three quarters of FY26. Earlier this month, Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) Milind Lakkad stated in a company call that the workforce stood at 6,13,069 by the end of the first quarter. 'Net attrition during the quarter was over 5,000 employees. We have honoured all the job offers, and we'll do so for the rest of the year. Lateral hiring will be recalibrated based on the demand outlook,' he was quoted as saying in The Indian Express report. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Lakkad also mentioned that TCS plans to keep investing in its business to stay in sync with the fast-evolving needs of its clients. Is AI the reason behind TCS's job cuts? In an exclusive conversation with Moneycontrol, TCS CEO K Krithivasan explained that the job cuts are not driven by artificial intelligence efficiency gains but are actually a part of a larger vision that aims to make the company 'more agile and future-ready'. 'It is not because that we need less people. We will continue to look for high (quality) talent, acquiring talent, training talent. That continues to happen. This is more about where there is a feasibility of deployment,' he said. TCS CEO K Krithivasan explained that the job cuts are not driven by AIefficiency gains but are actually a part of a larger vision that aims to make the company 'more agile and future-ready' in the face of rapid technological shifts. However, not all employees, especially those in senior positions, have been able to transition smoothly into new-age roles. That's changing,' Krithivasan noted. Despite this, experts suggest that AI and automation are silently reshaping the job market in IT. Roles like manual testing are increasingly being replaced by AI, and those who struggle to keep up with the pace of technological change are the ones most at risk. And this trend isn't unique to TCS. For the past couple of years, major tech companies have been slashing roles and leaning into automation. Earlier, Silicon Valley giant Microsoft said that roughly 30 per cent of the code is now AI-generated. What will TCS offer the affected employees? TCS has said the layoffs won't happen abruptly. Instead, the company plans to carry them out in a phased and considerate manner, ensuring those impacted are given a chance at redeployment within the company before any final decisions are made. 'It will be coming through the year. We won't do it in a hurry. We will first talk to the people that could be impacted. We will provide them an opportunity. When we are not able to provide the opportunity, then we will do what we need to do,' Krithivasan told Moneycontrol. The company said it will follow its standard HR policies, which include notice-period pay, extended insurance coverage, severance benefits, outplacement support, and access to counselling services.
