Chandler Levack's Montreal-set rom-com among world premieres at TIFF's 50th edition
A rom-com about a love triangle set in Montreal's music scene is among the films making their world premieres at the 50th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival.
Mile End Kicks, from Toronto director Chandler Levack, stars Barbie Ferreira as a young music critic who moves to Montreal in 2011 to write a book about Alanis Morissette's album Jagged Little Pill.
Her plans take a turn when she falls for two members of the same fledgling indie rock band and decides to become their publicist.
The film portrays the music scene in Montreal's Mile End neighbourhood, which gave rise to acts including Arcade Fire, Grimes and Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
It's one of five special presentations announced by TIFF, including Steven Soderbergh's The Christophers, about siblings who hire a forger to finish their late father's art.
TIFF runs from Sept. 4 to 14 and will open with John Candy: I Like Me, a documentary on the late Canadian comic.
The taste of the lineup revealed Thursday also includes Alejandro Amenabar's The Captive, which tells the story of Don Quixote author Miguel de Cervantes.
Meanwhile, Hedda, by The Marvels director Nia DaCosta, is a reimagining of Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen's play Hedda Gabler, about the daughter of a general who is trapped in a loveless marriage.
Another premiere at TIFF is Good News, a drama by South Korean director Sung-hyun Byun about a covert mission to land a hijacked airplane.
TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey said in a statement that this first wave of world premieres reflects the "innovation, heart and global perspective" that have defined the festival for the last five decades.

Just for Laughs founder's sex-assault civil trial disrupted as accuser lashes out during break
MONTREAL — The civil trial of Gilbert Rozon was disrupted by a rare outburst on Thursday when one of the women accusing the Just for Laughs founder of sexual assault lashed out at him during a break. Article content The plaintiff's husband also allegedly grabbed Rozon and threatened to strangle him outside the courtroom after the disgraced former comedy mogul denied the woman's allegations during his testimony. Article content Article content Article content The altercation led the judge to postpone the proceedings until Friday morning. Article content Article content Rozon is being sued for nearly $14 million by nine women who accuse him of sexual assault and misconduct, including actress Danie Frenette, who alleges he raped her twice in 1988, when she was working for the Just for Laughs comedy festival. Article content Frenette's stepdaughter, actress Salome Corbo, also alleges Rozon sexually assaulted her when she was 13 years old and working at the festival. Corbo is not a plaintiff in the case, but she has testified against him. Article content On Thursday, Rozon flatly denied the allegations of both women. He said Frenette's account of the first alleged rape, which she says occurred in a wooded area on his property during a party at the end of the 1988 festival, is 'completely implausible.' Article content He also suggested Corbo only testified 'because she's Danie Frenette's stepdaughter.' Article content 'What kind of person lies like that?' Frenette shouted in an expletive-laden tirade during a break in proceedings. Article content Article content 'No class,' Rozon said quietly as he left the room. Article content Article content After Rozon left the courtroom, Stefano Corbo, Frenette's husband and Salome Corbo's father, allegedly pulled him by the ear and then grabbed him by the throat and threatened him. Article content When he returned before Judge Chantal Tremblay, Rozon claimed Corbo had told him he wanted to strangle and suffocate him. His lawyer told the judge she had to intervene between the two men, and said neither she nor her client had the 'peace of mind' to continue the proceedings. Article content The hearing was postponed until Friday morning. Tremblay also excluded Corbo from the courtroom and asked him to follow the trial remotely for the remainder of the proceedings. Article content Rozon also described the alleged attack to journalists at the Montreal courthouse, saying he was shocked by the incident. 'If he had done the same thing to a woman, physically assaulting her, where would he be today, honestly?' he said. 'I thought this was a sacred place.'

Things to do in Metro Vancouver on the last weekend of June
The last weekend of June is a little less jam-packed with events than previous ones this month, with many upcoming summer festivals happening on Canada Day, rather than Saturday or Sunday. Still, there's plenty to do in Metro Vancouver before the country celebrates its 158th birthday on Tuesday. Here are some options. New Science World exhibit Science World's new exhibit "Artemis Space Adventure with LEGO Bricks" opened to the public this week. Featuring 'larger-than-life LEGO sculptures, hands-on engineering challenges, and collaborative workshop stations designed to ignite creativity,' the exhibition draws its inspiration from NASA's Artemis program, which aims to send humans to the moon for the first time since 1972. The exhibit will be at Science World through April 6, 2026, so visitors who don't make it on opening weekend will have plenty of time to check it out. Theatre Under the Stars This weekend also marks the start of a new season of Theatre Under the Stars, with preview performances of this year's productions of Roald Dahl's 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' and 'Legally Blonde' scheduled for Friday through Monday. Opening night will be July 2 for the former and July 3 for the latter. The annual run of live, outdoor theatre in Stanley Park's Malkin Bowl will continue through Aug. 16. A full schedule and ticket information is available on the TUTS website. Surrey Pride 2025 The 26th Annual Surrey Pride Festival will be held Saturday in the city's Civic Plaza from noon to 7 p.m. Started in the late 1990s as a response to efforts to ban books in the Surrey School District, the event has grown into an annual celebration featuring dozens of vendors and live performances. A performance schedule can be found on the Surrey Pride website. Pollinator Picnic at UBC UBC Farm is hosting several special activities during its weekly farmer's market this Saturday, all to celebrate the pollinators that make the food system possible. Among the free events scheduled are tours of the farm and various pollinator-related projects currently in progress there, as well as graduate student talks and kids' colouring activities. There will also be tea tastings and a 'meet n' treat' with bunnies from Rabbitats rabbit rescue by donation. The 'Pollinator Picnic' runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. More information can be found on the UBC Farm website. Portobello West Summer Market Portobello West will host the first of two summer markets at VanDusen Botanical Garden's Floral Hall on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Featuring '39 local B.C. makers of family fashion, jewelry, art, home decor, skincare, gourmet treats, wine and spirits, and more,' the market is free to enter. Organizers will hold a second summer market at VanDusen on Aug. 16.
