Chicago was defeated in all three games last week by the Washington Mystics, Phoenix Mercury and Atlanta Dream. Two out of the three contests were lost by 13 points or more.
Los Angeles has been blown out in each of its last three games as well. They have lost by consecutive spreads of 23, 31 and 16 to the Minnesota Lynx, Seattle Storm, and Lynx again.

Starting Sparks point guard Odyssey Sims has played well this season, averaging 10.5 points, 3.5 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game (via Pro Basketball Reference).
She is the team's fifth-leading scorer behind Kelsey Plum, Dearica Hamby, Azurá Stevens and Rickea Jackson.

On Monday, however, the Sparks' official public relations account revealed that Sims would be out for the team's upcoming game against the Chicago Sky. This will be her fourth-straight game that she has missed.
"#0 — Odyssey — NWT — Personal Reasons," the Sparks wrote.
Six-year veteran guard Shey Peddy signed with the Sparks on June 14 and has started in each of the last two contests. She is averaging 5.0 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists through three games with Los Angeles.
Chicago also lost its starting point guard this season, as Courtney Vandersloot went down with a torn ACL in a contest against the Indiana Fever earlier in June. She had been averaging 12.0 points and 6.2 assists per game prior to her injury.

The Sparks will likely start Peddy again on Tuesday against the Sky. Chicago, however, has rotated between Rebecca Allen, Kia Nurse and Rachel Banham to fill the void left by Vandersloot.
Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET at Wintrust Arena in Chicago on Tuesday evening. Sole possession of 10th place in the WNBA standings will be on the line in this game.

USMNT suffers a (good?) Gold Cup loss, plus the Nats clean house

The Pulse Newsletter 📣 | This is The Athletic's daily sports newsletter. Sign up here to receive The Pulse directly in your inbox. Good morning! Check your automated systems today. The U.S. men's national soccer team lost to Mexico last night, 2-1, in a bummer of a match for any American fans. The USMNT scored four minutes into the contest and never found the net again. Mexico charged through with a late go-ahead goal in the 77th minute. El Tri has now won two straight Gold Cups. But wait, is this a good thing for the U.S.? A quick mental investigation: And yet you could see the result still stung, particularly due to this ghastly missed hand-ball call in the box: Should this have been called a handball? 🤔 — FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer) July 7, 2025 That came in the 67th minute, when the match was still tied 1-1. We could be speaking differently if that's called correctly. Pochettino was very upset about it after the match, too. The USMNT will regroup for a September international window soon. We'll have more takes then. Let's keep moving: Nats clean house The Nationals fired both general manager Mike Rizzo and manager Dave Martinez, the team announced yesterday, in a move that's simultaneously expected and surprising. A team with a lot of young talent and promise is 37-53, with no shot at making any sort of run at the playoffs this year. And yet, this is an organization well-positioned for the future, especially with the haul from 2022's Juan Soto trade making an impact — and the No. 1 pick in this year's draft. Rizzo has been GM since 2009; Martinez has been manager since 2017. Ken Rosenthal argues that the logic is sound here, but the timing isn't. Advertisement Durant trade official Yes, the Kevin Durant-to-Houston deal involved seven teams, the Rockets announced yesterday, which is an NBA record. Durant lands in Houston, six players and a pick go to Phoenix and five other teams — the Lakers, Hawks, Timberwolves, Warriors and Nets — left with some odds and ends. See the full breakdown here. He has also won each of his three matches so far by straight sets. Shelton even shouted out Rodman after his third-round win on July 5 over Marton Fucsovics. "It's not just been me here, I have a great team. My parents are here, my girlfriend's here," Shelton said as the ESPN broadcast panned to Shelton's parents and Rodman in the stands. Shelton also spoke with USA TODAY in April on his relationship with Rodman. "She's great," he said. "I think we're both very happy. And yeah, it's been cool getting to know her and spend time with her." Who is Trinity Rodman? Rodman is a 23-year-old soccer player who's one of the best scorers for the U.S. Women's National Team. Advertisement Rodman, the daughter of Basketball Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman, scored three goals at the 2024 Paris Olympics to help lead the United States to a gold medal. She was also the youngest person ever drafted to the NWSL (18 years old) after going No. 2 overall to the Washington Spirit in 2021. The Guardian ranked Rodman the No. 5 player in the world in 2024, with fellow American forward Sophia Wilson at No. 3 on the list. Rodman's signature moment of her young USWNT career came in the knockout round against Japan, when she sent the U.S. to the semifinals of the 2024 Paris Olympics after scoring an extra-time goal to win 1-0. Rodman was initially enrolled to play soccer at Washington State but opted to forgo her college career to play professionally in the NWSL. Her brother, DJ Rodman, played basketball at Washington State and USC. Advertisement This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Trinity Rodman at Wimbledon: Why USWNT star is at Grand Slam event

Pirates Ace Paul Skenes Supported by Legendary Announcer After Tough Loss Sunday

Pirates Ace Paul Skenes Supported by Legendary Announcer After Tough Loss Sunday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Pittsburgh Pirates and manager Don Kelly came out on the losing side again Sunday as a familiar scene played itself out at T-Mobile Park in Seattle. Advertisement The Pirates lost 1-0 to the Mariners on a day when ace pitcher Paul Skenes put on a pitching clinic in front of his Pirates teammates, who once again failed to drum up the amount of run support necessary to grant Pittsburgh the victory. Skenes pitched five innings, giving up five hits and no earned runs while striking out ten batters on the day. Reliever Carmen Slodzinski relieved Skenes in the sixth inning before giving up a run in 2.2 innings of work that would prove to be the Pirates' undoing. Following the game, Skenes got a vote of support from college basketball legend Dick Vitale, who shared his thoughts on the difficulties Skenes has faced this season. Advertisement Pirates starting pitcher Paul Skenes (30).Kim Klement Neitzel-Imagn Images "The most unlucky guy record wise in @MLB is the @Pirates PAUL SKENES," Vitale wrote on his X account. "@Paul_Skenes who it seems never gets any run support. Sits at 4-7 with ERA 1.9 - ppl in baseball realize how good he is despite a losing record. "He is an ALL STAR again this year." Skenes was the lone All-Star representative for Pittsburgh this season, a bright spot on an otherwise dim season for Kelly's team in Steel City. "The Pirates offense is trash, Paul Skenes is ELITE," one fan said. Another compared Skenes to former Mariners pitcher Felix Martinez, nicknamed 'King Felix,' putting them both in the same class of players.
