An Indian national arriving at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport from Thailand was intercepted by customs officials for carrying 48 highly venomous snakes and five turtles hidden in his luggage.
The discovery was made during a thorough baggage inspection after the passenger disembarked from a flight originating in Bangkok. The seized reptiles included dangerous viper species and protected turtles, raising serious concerns over wildlife trafficking. Authorities, assisted by wildlife experts, are handling the reptiles as per legal protocols under the Wildlife Protection Act. The incident highlights ongoing efforts to combat illegal wildlife smuggling at Indian airports.
Passenger with venomous snakes and turtles seized at Mumbai airport
The traveller was stopped by customs officials late Saturday evening shortly after debarking from a flight that departed Bangkok. A meticulous search of his checked luggage yielded 48 poisonous vipers, three of which were spider-tailed horned vipers and 44 Indonesian pit vipers, in addition to five Asian leaf turtles. The Customs Bureau posted dramatic images on social media site X of the multicolored snakes squirming in containers at the time of the seizure.
The identity of the passenger is not yet known since he is under arrest and has so far not made any public remarks.

Expert assistance and legal measures enforce wildlife protection laws
The Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare (RAWW) assisted the customs officers in safely identifying and handling the seized reptiles. Later, the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) ordered the repatriation of the seized animals to their respective countries of origin under the provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act, which controls the trade and importation of protected species.
India's wildlife protection laws clearly prohibit importing protected and endangered species with or without licenses and permits. The impounded reptiles are subject to these prohibitions, and the seizure has been carried out as part of the strict enforcement of these provisions.

Rising incidents of wildlife trafficking interceptions at Indian airport
This case is one of a larger trend of interceptions of wildlife trafficking at Indian airports. Exotic and endangered species smuggling continues to be a lingering problem for customs and wildlife departments.
In the last few months, officials have confiscated several wildlife contraband:
In January: A Canadian national was apprehended from Delhi airport with a crocodile skull.
In February: Mumbai airport customs officials caught a passenger trying to smuggle five Siamang gibbons hidden in a trolley.
In November: exotic turtles were confiscated from passengers who had arrived from Bangkok.
Chennai airport officials confiscated multiple reptiles, such as a horned pit viper, iguanas, and tortoises, from a passenger who was arriving from Thailand in 2019.
Strict regulations govern animal imports to protect India's biodiversity
While importing animals into India is not prohibited, the process is strictly regulated. Importers are required to obtain all relevant permits and licenses, and some species, particularly those categorized as endangered or protected, are prohibited from importation entirely.
Customs authorities actively enforce these regulations to safeguard India's biodiversity and also block illegal wildlife trade that compromises global conservation efforts and harms indigenous ecosystems.

'Carrying explosives without declaring': DGCA warns Turkish Airlines to follow rules after surprise checks of its flights

This is an AI-generated image, used for representational purposes only. NEW DELHI: India has warned Turkish Airlines to comply with all rules after a surprise inspection of its aircraft at four airports over the last one week revealed lapses, including the alleged carriage of explosives without disclosing the same on one flight. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had conducted 'safety oversight and ramp (SOFA/RAMP)' inspections of the airline's passenger and cargo flights at Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Bengaluru from May 29 to June 2, 2025. The operations of Turkish to India will be under the lens as the regulator says it will conduct flow-up inspections 'as necessary to ensure continuous safety oversight.' The key lapses found during this surprise 'surveillance of foreign (Turkish) aircraft' include: 'The cargo contained dangerous goods for which permission is required from DGCA for carriage of explosives to/from over India. This was not found to be attached, nor was it mentioned in the dangerous goods declaration,' according to an aviation ministry statement. The other findings include: 'At Bengaluru, the marshaller handling ground operations lacked proper authorisation and a valid competency card for marshalling functions. During the arrival of aircraft, the aircraft maintenance engineer (AME) was unavailable, and the arrival procedure was carried out by a technician instead. Airworks is the authorised engineering service provider for Turkish Airlines,' it added. The check revealed there was no 'service level agreement in place between Turkish Airlines and its ground handling agent (GHA). Equipment such as ladders, step ladders, trolleys and ground power units (GPUs) lacked proper accountability and monitoring at Hyderabad and Bengaluru, where Globe Ground India was providing ground services without formal handover from Celebi,' the ministry statement said. 'The DGCA emphasises its unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and regulatory compliance of all foreign operators within Indian airspace. Turkish Airlines has been directed to address these findings promptly and ensure full compliance with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards and recommended practices as well as DGCA regulations. Further follow-up inspections will be conducted as necessary to ensure continuous safety oversight. ' Senior officials say the checks were conducted on Turkish Airlines aircraft operated by the airline and not the two Boeing 777s wet-leased (hired with crew) by IndiGo from it. Turkish and IndiGo each operate a daily passenger flight between Delhi & Istanbul and Mumbai & Istanbul. Following Turkey's support to Pakistan during Operation Sindoor and the firing of Turkish drones by Pakistan, New Delhi is reviewing its ties with Istanbul. The security clearance of Turkish ground handler Celebi was withdrawn last month and it had to wind up activities from nine Indian airports. Then the DGCA asked IndiGo to wrap up its wet lease of two Boeing 777s from Turkish by Aug 31, 2025, by giving a 'last and final three-month extension. ' This final extension was given after getting an 'undertaking from (IndiGo) that they will terminate the damp lease with Turkish Airlines within this extension period, and not seek any further extension for these operations.' 'Those who murder elected PM': Priyanka Chaturvedi mocks Bilawal Bhutto's ‘buzdil' speech; slams Pakistan in Brussels

NEW DELHI: Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi on Wednesday delivered a scathing rebuke of Pakistan and its political-military establishment during a public address in Brussels, targeting former Pakistan Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari without naming him. Referring to Bhutto's remarks, Chaturvedi said, 'The person who is leading the delegation, in his parliamentary speech, said 'Kon raat ke andhere mein hamle karte hain, Buzdil raat ke waqt hamle karte hain'... 'Buzdil' are those who do a coup on an elected government and after sending them to jail, murder the elected Prime Minister, so that the army can control the government.' Her comments referenced Bhutto's remarks on India's military response to Islamabad's terror attacks. Chaturvedi flipped that accusation, linking true cowardice to Pakistan's history of military coups and political assassinations, including the killing of Benazir Bhutto and the ousting of Imran Khan. In a sharp critique of the Pakistani state's support for terrorism , she called on the international community to confront Islamabad's role. ' She highlighted India's resilience against Pakistan across fields—from military conflict to cricket—saying, 'We have decades of experience of showing them their place. Our armed forces have defeated them, we have defeated you in cricket, trade... How many more times do they want to get humiliated by us?' Her remarks came as part of an all-party parliamentary delegation led by BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad currently touring Europe, including Belgium, to raise concerns about terrorism and highlight the Indian position on global platforms. The delegation includes BJP and Congress leaders, along with former diplomats, and is engaging with EU officials, think-tanks, and diaspora communities. The diplomatic effort follows the recent terror attack in Pahalgam and India's subsequent airstrikes on terror bases in Pakistan and PoK.

"What Happened Is Beyond Tragic": Sachin Tendulkar Reacts As 11 Die At RCB's IPL Celebration Due To Stampede

What started as a celebration, turned fatal on Wednesday as 11 people died in Bengaluru due to stampede at Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL 2025 victory celebration. Much like Tuesday night when the team's win in Ahmedabad triggered a street party in the Garden City, Wednesday too had thousands, which eventually became lakhs, converging at the Chinnaswamy stadium, leaving the police outnumbered and struggling to take control of the situation. The men in uniform tried to use mild force to disperse the crowd or to at least bring some order but that did little to discourage people, many of whom could be seen pressed against the stadium's entrance gate, desperate to get in. The scenes leading up to the tragedy reminded one of the historic welcome given to the T20 World Cup-winning Indian squad by Mumbai in July last year. However, while the sea of humanity had a gala time in Mumbai, things went haywire in the Garden City. Sachin Tendulkar has reacted on the incident. "What happened at Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, is beyond tragic. My heart goes out to every affected family. Wishing peace and strength to all," Sachin posted on X. What happened at Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, is beyond tragic. My heart goes out to every affected family. Wishing peace and strength to all. 🙏 — Sachin Tendulkar (@sachin_rt) June 4, 2025 Here's what Royal Challengers Bengaluru had to say in its official statement regarding the incident. "We are deeply anguished by the unfortunate incidents that have come to light through media reports regarding public gatherings all over Bengaluru in anticipation of the team's arrival this afternoon. The safety and well-being of everyone is of utmost importance to us," the statement read. "RCB mourns the tragic loss of lives and extend our heartfelt condolences to the affected families. "Immediately upon being made aware of the situation, we promptly amended our program, and followed, the guidance and advice of the local administration. We urge all our supporters to please stay safe." The BCCI said the turn of events was shocking and the organisers should have been better-prepared. "It's most unfortunate, organisers should have planned RCB's IPL-winning celebrations better," BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia told PTI. "When one organises a victory celebration of this magnitude, proper precautions and security measures need to be taken," he added.
