₹45 Lakh Aquifer Project Finds No Takers, BMC Misses Monsoon Opportunity

₹45 Lakh Aquifer Project Finds No Takers, BMC Misses Monsoon Opportunity

Time of Indiaa day ago
Bhopal: The approaching end of monsoon season has left Bhopal's about ₹45 lakh Shallow Aquifer Management (SAM 2.0) project under AMRUT 2.0 at a standstill, as no takers have come forward to execute the work.
Introduced in 2022 across 10 urban centres, the SAM programme aims to enhance groundwater sustainability through infrastructure development and community education. While Hyderabad and Jaipur show notable advancement, Bhopal's implementation remains dormant due to insufficient contractor participation.
The initiative, approved in early 2023, aimed to establish recharge structures across 10 sites, predominantly near Hoshangabad Road, BHEL region, and Arif Nagar.
These installations aim to boost underground water reserves and control urban flooding. Despite completed site assessments and official clearances, the project remains dormant during the vital aquifer recharge period.
BMC officials when contacted did not comment. Experts have noted this delay has squandered a crucial chance to utilise monsoon precipitation for groundwater restoration.
The situation is further complicated by water quality issues. Islamnagar and Sarvar areas have reported excessive nitrate concentrations, potentially causing health complications including blue-baby syndrome. Central Water Pollution Control Board has identified multiple locations breaching water safety parameters.

Friends of Muslim Society marks Friendship Day by Awarding Talented Students, Scholars

1 2 3 4 Nagpur: The Muslim Friends' Society (MFS), a group of 60 retired, in-service professionals and govt officials, felicitated and awarded over 160 meritorious students and PhD scholars from the community as part of their 30th annual Friendship Day celebration at Anjuman College of Engineering and Technology (ACET) auditorium on Sunday. The awardees included SSC and HSC students, including a large number of girls, who cleared their exams with flying colours. Nagpur University gold medallists, PhD scholars, successful NET/SET and CA candidates, and persons with outstanding performances were awarded on the occasion. A special Rs11,000 award sponsored by advocate Firdos Mirza was conferred on an Urdu medium girl student scoring the highest marks in the Marathi subject. The awardees included many students from Kamptee schools. Over three decades ago, some friends came together to start the tradition of awarding each other's kids in a modest living room of an apartment in Anant Nagar. "This was done to keep Muslim families and kids inspired and motivated towards the importance of education as the country was facing communal tension in the early 1990s. We also bring a community topper as one of the guests to guide the meritorious students in their careers," said MFS president Mushtaque Eshaan Qureshi. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These Are The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo Over the years, the popularity increased, and the event turned public from being held privately at an apartment. One can see toppers everywhere in this hall," said Tanveer Mirza, chairman, ACET College Development Committee. District child protection officer Mushtak Pathan was the chief guest, and UPSC CSE-2024 AIR 67 Farkhanda Qureshi was the guest of honour. Govt sponsorship for single parents, such as the need care and protection programme, is available to support the education of kids. Similarly, kids suffering from cancer, sickle cell, or HIV too can avail financial assistance for education, and they must apply," said Pathan. Pedal power could revive Doon, say experts

Dehradun: A city choking on traffic and smog can still be steered toward a cleaner, safer future if its people start pedalling, said experts at a national cycling conclave, held in Dehradun on Sunday. The event was hosted by local group Pahadi Pedallers, bringing together cycling advocates and urban mobility experts from across the country to highlight how a strong cycling culture could help revive the Doon Valley before it's too late. "Some say it's too late to salvage the city, but that's not true," said Lokesh Ohri, founder of Been There Doon That. "There's still a last ray of hope. Everyone wants clean air and a better environment. If we make Dehradun a cycling city, we stand a chance." Experts said that building more flyovers and widening roads only leads to more motorised traffic. Instead, they recommended small, community-driven changes to encourage cycling as a daily habit. "People often worry about cyclist safety due to a lack of infrastructure, but if a few areas are declared no-vehicle zones in coordination with authorities, both children and adults will start cycling. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why Seniors Are Snapping Up This TV Box, We Explain! Techno Mag Learn More Undo As demand grows, the government will be pushed to build the infrastructure," said Ashish Bajaj, founder of Cycle Network Grow, Kolkata. Speakers also proposed introducing weekly car-free days and encouraging families to cycle together. Participants from Delhi, Noida, and Himachal Pradesh said change must start at home, one habit at a time. Gajender Ramola, founder of Pahadi Pedallers, said the idea was to reconnect people with the simplicity and sustainability of cycling while urging policymakers to act. "We need to learn from countries like the Netherlands and Denmark, where more than 40% of people cycle to work," he said. "With the right policies and strong infrastructure, we can build habits that last. On the other hand, the number of four-wheelers in 10 major Indian cities has gone up by 300%. According to the WHO, cycling for just 30 minutes a day can reduce the risk of heart disease by 50%. If even 10% of urban Indians take up cycling, we could cut the country's carbon emissions by 1.5 crore tonnes a year. Close shave for 4 Koderma residents river washed away car while crossing bridge

1 2 Chatra: Four persons, including two women, had a narrow escape after the car they were travelling in was washed away in a rain-fed river in Chatra on Sunday. The district administration swung into action to retrieve the car while locals risked their lives to rescue the people, who were stuck in the water. All four of them are residents of Koderma district. The incident happened when the car was negotiating a low-height and narrow bridge under the Kadgawan panchayat in Mayurhund block. The car was later taken out using a crane. Those travelling in the car were identified as Doman Ram (64), Rinki Devi (34), Vishal Ram (27), and Usha Devi (60). According to the villagers, the car was crossing the bridge on the Ledhia river when the water level suddenly increased and started flowing at a high speed. "The car was washed away, but luckily, it got stuck in a ditch under the bridge," an eyewitness said. The passengers were returning to Koderma after attending the last rites of their relative in Shaley village of Mayurhund block. Block development officer (BDO) Manish Kumar and Mayurhund police station officer-in-charge Ashish Prasad rushed to the spot with their teams to rescue the victims. The villagers said there had been no rain in the area for the last four days, and there was no strong flow of water under the bridge. But as the rain started on Sunday, the water level in the river increased, and the current as well. Despite appealing to the local public representatives and officials for the construction of a bigger bridge several times, no action has been taken so far, the villagers rued. Sohan Mahto, a villager, said whenever the water was flowing above the bridge, the road was deserted until the water subsided. "Around 1,300 villagers of this panchayat face this trouble every year. Sick people cannot go to the hospital, while children stay at home, missing school," he said. Local mukhiya Ashok Bhuiyan said he has been trying to get the sanction for a new bridge with the proper height.
