Visiting US parks just got pricier — for foreign tourists, thanks to Trump's new order
He has issued an executive order on Thursday directing the Interior Department to raise entrance and recreation fees for foreign tourists visiting US national parks. The move, which is expected to generate more than $90 million per year, will also give priority to US residents when applying for permits. Critics claim the move undermines inclusivity and conservation efforts.
For any national park that presently charges admission, it directs Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, who is in charge of the National Park Service, to "develop a strategy" to increase entrance costs and recreation pass prices for visitors who are not U.S. citizens.

How much more will foreign tourists pay?
According to the Interior Department's May fiscal year budget proposal, such a surcharge would bring in over $90 million a year.
Live Events
Not all national parks have entry fees, and those that do have different prices. Typically, guests can buy an annual pass that can be used at one park or in a particular area of the nation, or they can buy a regular daily or weekly pass to one particular park.
A more extensive "America the Beautiful" pass, available at all national parks across the country for $80, is also provided by the Park Service.
Entrance fees to some of the most visited locations in the National Park Service, such as the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, and Yellowstone, are $20 per person or $35 per car.
Will Americans get park access priority?
The Interior Department was also directed by President Trump to give U.S. citizens "preferential treatment" over foreign tourists with regard to "recreational access rules, including permitting or lottery rules" that may be in effect at parks. Americans do get priority access to park permits and recreation with this new order.
While some well-known national parks have reservation systems for access and camping during high seasons, the ruling did not specify what those preferential treatment standards would entail.

What else does Donald Trump's executive order entail?
The president also created the "Make America Beautiful Again" Commission in a separate executive order, whose duties include encouraging voluntary conservation activities and increasing recreational access to public lands and rivers.
A memorandum signed in January 2017, at the end of former President Barack Obama's second term, that aimed to advance diversity and inclusion at national parks was also repealed by the order Thursday. The action seems to be a part of the Trump administration's continued attempt to reduce federal diversity initiatives.

What does this mean for national park funding?
The Interior Department also suggested reducing funding for the Park Service by about $1 billion in its fiscal year budget for 2026, the worst budget drop in the agency's history. The most recent actions follow efforts by the Trump administration to cut the number of employees at the National Park Service. About 1,000 Park Service workers were let go by the administration in February as part of its efforts to implement significant budget and staff cuts throughout the federal government.
Since President Trump took office in January, the Park Service has lost 24 percent of its permanent employees, according to a report this week from the National Parks Conservation Association.
FAQs
Are U.S. park fees increasing for everyone?
No, only for foreign visitors. US residents will continue to pay standard rates, while international tourists may face new surcharges.
Will Americans have improved access to reservations now?
Possible. The order prioritizes US residents for permits and lotteries at parks with limited access systems.

No Wi-Fi at Kolkata airport for 7 months: Flyers land in digital dead zone; ‘I couldn't even book an Uber,' says UK-returned student
Kolkata Airport (File Image) KOLKATA: Visitors flying into Kolkata from abroad are facing significant connectivity issues upon landing at the airport, with no Wi-Fi service available since Nov last year. And, with no SIM card retail outlet in the arrival lounge, this means those without international roaming services are unable to connect with their hosts upon reaching the city or book an app cab or access their travel documents and hotel bookings. Airport officials say they are aware of the problem and trying their best to restore Wi-Fi but a tender floated to rope in an internet service provider is yet to get a favourable response. "We will also speak to the agency manning retail shops inside the airport to see if it is feasible to have a SIM card retail counter," said a senior airport official. Ankur Upadhyay, who recently returned home from the UK, took to X to express his anguish. "Landed at Kolkata airport only to be stranded without any Wi-Fi and internet! Couldn't even go to my pre-booked hotel as I didn't have any internet access to get an Uber! I didn't have any Indian SIM card! What kind of 'international' airport has no internet? Had a smooth transition in Doha airport earlier! How can we compete with places like Dubai and Doha when we can't even provide a basic airport need of Wi-Fi to passengers? Shockingly out of touch!" wrote Upadhyay, who pursues doctoral research at University of Warwick . by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo Airport lacks proper guidance, signage for international flyers Another passenger, Shayak Chakraborty, too expressed his disappointment on X last month: 'It's unfortunate that NSC Bose Int'l Airport, Kolkata (CCU) has no Wi-Fi for passengers in the departure & arrival area of the international terminal... Please look into it.' Several travel bloggers, too have also highlighted the connectivity issue. Previously, even when Wi-Fi was available at the airport, international passengers without local mobile numbers were unable to log in. AAI airports nationwide offer 45 minutes of complimentary Wi-Fi, requiring Indian mobile numbers for authentication. International visitors are required to obtain OTP credentials from airport help desks by presenting their passport and tickets. However, Kolkata airport lacks proper guidance and signage for this service. 'Once Wi-Fi is restored, we will solve this issue as well with help desks at prominent places with appropriate signage,' said the official. According to an official, AAI's tender for Wi-Fi service rights at Kolkata airport offers a five-year contract with a possible two-year extension based on performance. 'We have floated a new tender but are yet to get a vendor. Under the proposed contract, passengers will be entitled to 45 minutes of free Wi-Fi per day at a minimum speed of 5 Mbps and with a data cap of 500 MB. Beyond this threshold, standard internet tariffs will apply,' he said. The official added that the vendor would be required to deploy robust cybersecurity measures, ensure 180-day log retention and provide access logs to law enforcement agencies upon request. 'We have set a July 31 deadline by when we intend to solve this issue.'

Documents Every Traveler Should Carry (and Back Up Digitally)
Planning a trip to another country is exciting, but it also means handling a bunch of paperwork. And let's be honest, it's pretty easy to miss something in the middle of booking flights and figuring out what to pack. Different countries expect different things, and even one missing paper can lead to trouble at immigration or the airport. So before you fly out, it's worth going over a few must-have documents. It's just a simple list that can help you avoid a lot of stress later. Your Visa (If Needed) This one depends on where you're going. Some places want you to get a visa ahead of time, others are alright with giving one when you arrive, and a few let you apply online. Whatever type it is, keep a printout with you– even if they emailed it. Some places still ask to see the paper version. Also, save it to your phone or email, just in case. Passport This is your main ID when you're outside the country. You'll need it for way more than just airports– hotels, money exchange counters, and even local checkpoints might ask for it. Double-check that it's valid for at least six months from when you land. Keep it safe, and also store a clear photo or scan of it somewhere– either printed or on your phone. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending local enterprise accounting software [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo A Spare ID It's always good to carry a second ID. A driver's licence is useful if you plan to rent a car, but even if not, it works for smaller ID checks. PAN or Aadhaar won't always help abroad, but keeping soft copies on your phone might still be useful for anything linked to India (like online banking or verifications). Proof of Bookings – Flights + Hotels Even if your airline or hotel has everything on record, immigration officers might ask to see where you're staying and when you're leaving. Best move? Download the emails with your flight and hotel details, and save them somewhere on your phone that doesn't need internet. If you like paper, print them too. A Rough Itinerary N ot all countries ask for it, but some do. A short note of where you'll be, with dates and places, can come in handy– especially if you're visiting multiple cities. No need to make it look official. Just a few lines on your phone or a small printout is enough. Travel Insurance This part's easy to forget– until something goes wrong. Good travel insurance covers not just medical issues, but also lost bags, cancelled flights, or stolen stuff. Some countries even make it mandatory. Buy a plan that fits your trip and keep the policy number and helpline somewhere you can find it fast. Vaccine Papers (If Required) Rules change all the time. Some places might want proof of yellow fever or COVID shots, depending on where else you've travelled recently. Look up your destination's entry rules a few days before flying. If you do need a certificate, carry a copy and keep one saved in your files. Backups– Always Upload all your documents– passport, visa, tickets, insurance, ID– to a cloud folder (Google Drive, Dropbox, whatever you prefer). That way, even if something goes missing, you're not stuck. Also, save copies in your phone's file manager or Docs app, in case you're offline.
