Jaw-Dropping Video Shows NASA's Plan to Deliver a Helicopter Swarm to Mars Without Landing

Gizmodo25-07-2025
It's been more than a year since the Ingenuity helicopter broke one of its blades, ending its experimental stint on Mars. On the heels of this wildly successful NASA mission, a defense contractor has introduced a new design concept to succeed the iconic Mars chopper—one that would release multiple vehicles to spread across the Martian landscape at the same time, like a coordinated swim team diving into the water.
Virginia-based AeroVironment (AV), in partnership with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), recently revealed its Skyfall mission concept, a next-generation Mars helicopter designed to pave the way for a future human landing on the neighboring world. Skyfall would deploy six small choppers, similar to NASA's Ingenuity, to the Red Planet using a single entry capsule, with each helicopter landing independently on the Martian surface. The mission is aiming for a launch date in 2028, according to AV.
The landing carrier would drop the six helicopters midway through its descent through the planet's atmosphere, eliminating the need for a landing platform. Following their release from the carrier, each helicopter would land on the Martian surface under its own power. Each helicopter would quickly get to work, exploring different parts of the planet and investigating potential landing sites for a future human mission.
Operating independently, each chopper will collect high-resolution images of the surface and radar data from beneath the surface to search for potential resources on Mars. 'With six helicopters, Skyfall offers a low-cost solution that multiplies the range we would cover, the data we would collect, and the scientific research we would conduct–making humanity's first footprints on Mars meaningfully closer,' William Pomerantz, head of Space Ventures at AV, said in a statement.
Ingenuity was the first helicopter to fly on another planet, paving the way for a fleet of successors that can explore the Martian surface from above. The o.g. Mars helicopter arrived on the planet in February 2021, tucked inside the belly of NASA's Perseverance rover. Shortly afterwards, the 19-inch-tall (48-centimeter), 4-pound (1.8-kilogram) helicopter became the first powered aircraft to lift off from the surface of another planet. Although it was originally intended to perform just five test flights, Ingenuity kept on going, performing 72 flights and flying 14 times farther than planned for a total flight time of two hours.
Things came crashing down for Ingenuity last year after the helicopter broke its blades while landing for the 72nd time, officially ending its mission in January 2024. Its mission more than exceeded expectations, delivering precious data on a new method of exploring the surface of another planet and opening up a new gateway for missions to Mars and elsewhere. Whatever chopper comes next will have some pretty big shoes to fill, so maybe sending six helicopters to Mars is the appropriate follow-up.

I Asked ChatGPT How To Earn Money When the Stock Market Is Volatile: Here's What It Said

The stock market can be a solid investment plan — if it's done well. With ups and downs in the market like we've seen this year, new investors might view stocks as risky bets. It's imperative to stick to a plan that's going to weather stock declines. Read Next: Explore More: Here's what ChatGPT recommended doing in times of stock market volatility. Focus On Dividend Stocks Dividend stocks regularly pay out a set amount to shareholders. Even when the market wavers, investors will likely still receive a piece of the pie. ChatGPT suggested investing in dividend stocks via the Vanguard High Dividend Yield ETF (VYM). ChatGPT added that reinvesting dividend money into the stock is a smart move that also steels you against market dips. Learn More: Try Dollar-Cost Averaging Another method ChatGPT recommended was dollar-cost averaging. To do this, set up your bank account to invest a set amount of cash into the stock market on a regular basis. Using this method, ChatGPT pointed out that 'you buy more shares when prices are low and fewer when prices are high, averaging out your cost and reducing the stress of timing the market.' Explore Advanced Options For those who already know a fair amount about the stock market and feel more comfortable, ChatGPT recommended two courses of action. One is to sell covered calls, which means you set a price (known as the strike price) and a time frame to sell your stock to an investor at that price. In exchange, you'll earn a premium. This is a good way to earn money on stocks you own — especially in stocks that don't fall or rise very much. Know that you have to own 100 shares per contract, and that you must sell the stock at the price you set. This means if it goes above that price, since you sold it already, you won't benefit from that gain. Another advanced option ChatGPT suggested is selling cash-secured puts. 'Here, you don't own the stock yet. Instead, you agree to buy it at a lower price if it falls to that level within a specific time frame. You're paid a premium for making that agreement,' ChatGPT explained. You'll need to have enough capital on hand to buy 100 shares. Expand Investments Looking outside of the stock market is also a possibility. ChatGPT suggested gold bonds and real estate as alternatives to investing in the stock market. This way, your portfolio is more diversified so your income doesn't depend solely on one investment strategy. Use High-Interest Savings or CDs High-yield savings accounts and certificates of deposit (CDs) can feel safer than the stock market because there's no real risk of loss. Storing cash in a high-interest savings account means your money grows as long as it's in the account. Similarly, CDs will grow at a set rate after a predetermined amount of time, so you know exactly how much money you'll get out of your investment. Beale Infrastructure Cancels Reclaimed Water System Expansion Plans for Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz., August 08, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Data centers are the physical backbone of the digital world. The people of Southern Arizona rely on this infrastructure daily to check emails, perform critical health and municipal services, enable remote work, stream media and to organize community events. Beale Infrastructure was founded based on the belief that data centers can and should be designed sustainably working in close partnership with communities, and Beale's mission is to push the industry forward to enable a responsible and inclusive digital infrastructure future. Beale was invited by the City of Tucson to engage in a public-private partnership for the sustainable development of data centers called "Project Blue." The city expressed enthusiasm for the transformative impact of Beale's proposed investments to substantially expand reclaimed water infrastructure and invest an initial $3.6B of economic impact and job creation in Tucson's economically disadvantaged southeast area which has been earmarked for industrial development. On May 30, 2025, it was publicly communicated by the City that the concepts for Project Blue strike the appropriate balance for significant economic development without risking the region's water security. Project Blue concepts have been developed in close partnership with the City of Tucson, engineers at Tucson Water, and Tucson Electric Power (TEP) to maximize principles for sustainable data center design, responsible water use and the pursuit of carbon-free energy resources. At full potential buildout, the concept plans for Project Blue entailed use of a small portion of Tucson's reclaimed water portfolio, which Beale committed to replenish drop-for-drop via investments to develop new water sources, fund PFAS remediation projects, remedy system leaks and other initiatives to be enforced by way of a development agreement. Beale participated in a series of open information-sharing sessions to engage with the community and answer questions about Project Blue. On August 6, 2025, the City Council voted to discontinue engagement on the proposed annexation, resulting in the cancellation of Beale's plans for reclaimed water system expansions. Beale supports and actively seeks community feedback for all potential developments and respects the community's input on the proposed use and replenishment from Tucson's water system. Alternative cooling designs have not yet been prioritized for Project Blue based on the City's feedback and desire to see reclaimed water infrastructure expansions, but they are a viable path for data centers to operate in the region with minimal water use. We continue to believe there is a win-win solution to bring this record-breaking investment to Tucson. "We are disappointed in the decision not to pursue this opportunity for Tucson. We partnered closely with municipal engineering teams and Tucson Water to develop plans directly compatible with Tucson's Climate Action and Adaptation and One Water plans," stated Brendan Gallagher, Senior Vice President of Development. "We see it as a missed opportunity for the city, as this project potentially represents tens of millions of dollars in tax revenue, hundreds of millions of dollars in infrastructure to serve the community, and thousands of high-paying local and union jobs." Beale thanks the supporters who are engaged on this opportunity, and we will continue to engage with the Tucson community on the dialogue around sustainable data center development standards and the role these projects can play advancing Southern Arizona's economic and technological future. Beale is evaluating community partnerships, clean energy strategies and digital infrastructure investment opportunities throughout the United States, and we look forward to sharing more announcements soon. Startup radar: Electric trailers, audio detection, onboarding agents, construction communication

GeekWire's startup coverage documents the Pacific Northwest entrepreneurial scene. Sign up for our weekly startup newsletter , and check out the GeekWire funding tracker and venture capital directory . From top left, clockwise: Audiori CEO Remya Nair Stephen; Elementrailer CEO Frank Lin; Fluidworks CEO Jose Kuttan; and Pivotal Build CEO Jonathan Madamba. From clean tech to voice tech, we're spotlighting another batch of early stage startups making moves in Seattle. A big thanks to Austin Guyette, partner at Seattle venture capital firm Voyager Capital, who provided the 'VC View' investor perspective for each startup. Read more to learn about the companies, and check out past startup radar spotlights here. Email me at taylor@ to flag startups to feature. Audiori Founded: 2024 The business: AI supertool for sound. Aims to detect matches between songs, layers within songs, and different audio components — a self-described 'smart, semantic copyright detection' tool. Audiori is preparing for a limited beta launch later this month. Aiming to partner with studios, rights organizations, and media platforms. Leadership: CEO and co-founder Remya Nair Stephen has a background in tech and creative industries, and was a VP of operations at gaming startup CropBytes. Co-founder Ian McCann has expertise in deep learning and signal processing; he was a data scientist at Conversica and CTO at VC View from Austin Guyette: 'Rights enforcement and fraud detection is a hot topic given the rise of GenAI (Seattle-based Loti is also in this category). For high-profile artists, there is a world where this is a no-brainer! However, it's an open question if most of the value in this market accrues to law firms or to products like Audiori.' Elementrailer Founded: 2024 The business: Motorized electric trailers that help EV drivers reduce range loss. Also aims to provide fuel savings for internal combustion engine fleets during towing. Targeting commercial trailer fleets, municipal utilities, last-mile delivery services, and others. The company won a prize at the UW's recent Environmental Innovation Challenge. Leadership: Founder and CEO Frank Lin is a former realtor and restaurant owner, and earned a masters degree in entrepreneurship this summer from the UW. Co-founders Julisa Cruz and Lillian Mitchell also graduated from the UW this year. VC View: 'We're seeing a push to electrify commercial transport but this market is hotly contested. The value here seems to be in hardware patents and an exit to an incumbent who wants to acquire the technology is certainly possible.' Fluidworks Founded: 2024 The business: Voice-powered onboarding agent that integrates into existing software products and interacts through natural conversation. The idea is to replace static tooltips or lengthy product tours. The startup has a few customers and recently added nearly 90 companies to test its latest release. Leadership: CEO and co-founder Jose Kuttan previously started and sold retail tech company WeavedIn to Paytm. His co-founders — Dilip Prasad, Jeph Alapat, and Jibin Scaria — also worked at WeavedIn. VC View: 'Martech and CX are being re-imagined with GenAI and this is a good example of those trends. I'd encourage folks to chat with the agent on their website — if you extrapolate a bit this could be a really cool product! The signals coming of interactions with agents like this could be gold for companies — the billion-dollar question is how products like Fluidworks evolve from point solutions into broader platforms with incumbents and competitors already playing in adjacent areas.' Pivotal Build Founded: 2025 The business: Construction tech startup that wants to help improve communication for small and mid-sized teams. Aims to streamline updates, reduce rework errors and stay aligned across stakeholders — without needing to adopt project management software. The company is working with multiple design clients. Leadership: CEO Jonathan Madamba has nearly three decades of experience in tech, including leadership stints at Software AG and T-Mobile, and has industry expertise in construction. Co-founder Jez Zapata specializes in sales and also worked at SADA, a cloud consultancy. VC View: 'Construction is under-penetrated from a technology standpoint so there may be an opportunity here. That said, I signed up for this alpha product, played around with it, and still don't know what it does or what value it provides. A great first-mile product experience is key for SMB go-to-market so my hope is that their beta product improves on the current version.'
