Keben poised for Watford return

BBC News17-04-2025

Watford centre-back Kevin Keben is set to make his comeback in "at least" one of their games over the Easter weekend. The 21-year-old Cameroonian has not played since suffering a "long-term muscle injury" in the 2-0 derby win over Luton Town on 23 February. The club say his injury has been "vulnerable to setbacks" so he has been "carefully managed" over the last few weeks.Watford, who are seven points outside the play-off places with four games to play, are at home to second-placed Burnley on Friday, with a trip to Portsmouth to follow on Monday. Keben's imminent return is a rare piece of good news for boss Tom Cleverley in recent weeks.Four players, including star playmaker Giorgi Chakvetadze (fractured toe), have been ruled out for the remainder of the campaign and forward Zavier Massiah-Edwards will not be available for the Burnley game because he is subject to concussion protocols.

Andre Onana offered Man Utd escape route as 'transfer negotiations begin'

Manchester United spent big to dump David de Gea and make Andre Onana their No.1 when signing him from Inter Milan two years ago at the behest of Erik ten Hag - but it's been a bumpy ride for the Cameroon stopper since moving to Old Trafford Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana could be handed an Old Trafford exit by French side Monaco - if he wants one. Onana has been United's undisputed No.1 since arriving from Inter Milan in a £44million in 2023. The ex-Ajax stopper joined at the behest of then-boss Erik ten Hag, who unceremoniously dumped long-time first choice David de Gea, having concluded that the Spaniard's style didn't fit what he wanted. ‌ It's been a difficult ride for the Cameroonian since, with a number of high-profile errors during United's two most disappointing Premier League campaigns in the league's history. And there are suggestions that Ruben Amorim and the club's hierarchy could cut their losses on Onana this summer. ‌ Aston Villa's Emi Martinez has been heavily linked with a move to United, amid suggestions that a £40m move could be in the offing for the Argentina international. Ironically Martinez was sent off at Old Trafford on the final day of last season, as Villa missed out on Champions League football. But to bring in a new No.1, United have to shift Onana out. He has no interest in being second choice and, frankly, is on too big a contract to be left in limbo. So United need to cut a deal for him first. And according to Sky in Italy, they're doing just that. It's claimed Monaco are opening negotiations with United to see if a deal can be done to take him to the Ligue 1 club this summer. Onana, 29, has made 101 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils since his arrival. One player who snubbed a move this summer is club captain Bruno Fernandes, who revealed this week how United boss Amorim played a key role in his decision to snub a mega money offer from Saudi side Al-Hilal. The move would have trebled his current £300,000-a-week salary. "The president of Al Hilal called me a month ago to ask about the possibility of me moving there," said Fernandes. "I had to wait a while to think about the future. As I've always said, I would be willing to do it if United thought it was best to move on. I spoke with the coach, Ruben Amorim, who really tried to talk me out of it. ‌ " Manchester United said they didn't want to sell me. They said if I wanted to go I could, but they didn't need the money. From my side, it was a very ambitious proposal, the president was a fantastic person. I never talked about the money, it ended up coming up later, with my agent. "I had to make the decision as a family and understand what I wanted for my future. That was the question my wife asked, what my professional goals would be. At no point did she say yes or no, she always supported me and put my professional side first. ‌ "It was an easy move, even at a family level. I had Ruben Neves, Joao Cancelo. My children are used to playing with theirs. But I simply want to stay at the highest level, playing in the big competitions, because I still feel capable of that. "I want to continue to be happy and do what I love most. I'm still very passionate about this sport. It's my way of seeing football and I'm happy with my decision." Rooney gave Plymouth 'glowing reference'

New Plymouth Argyle boss Tom Cleverley says he consulted former Pilgrims head coach Wayne Rooney before taking on the pair were team-mates at Manchester United where they won the 2013 Premier League together as well as playing alongside one another for England captain Rooney left his role as Argyle boss on 31 December with the club bottom of the table to be replaced by Miron was appointed earlier this month after Muslic left to take over at German side Schalke."I spoke not just with Wayne but other people who I know that have played for or coached at the club," Cleverley told BBC Radio Devon. "He gave the club and the place a glowing reference and he's obviously someone's opinion that I can trust."I played with him for many years and I think it's important that I did some references, but most of all is what I see now through my own eyes."That will really start on Monday when I get on the pitch with the players and I make my own judgements, but I like to thoroughly research whatever I'm about to dive in to and the references were glowing." The role at Argyle is 35-year-old Cleverley's second as a head coach, having been in charge at Watford last says that experience at the Hornets - who have had 10 permanent managers since sacking Nigel Pearson in 2020 - will stand him in good stead for his future career in management."It's obviously a football club that has its challenges being the head coach," Cleverley said."I had 14 months there that have really given me some good experience to handle things throughout the rest of my career."I'm grateful for that experience and now I feel like I can really translate that into a longer term project with real stability and I think you'll see me flourish as a coach."Cleverley takes over a Pilgrims side that dropped back to the third tier after two seasons in the chairman Simon Hallett is looking for new investment, and the club was linked with a bidder that included former Wales captain Gareth Bale among their says returning to the Championship is his "number one goal", but says it is important to build a legacy at the club as well."I also want to create a long-term process that doesn't just mean we're promoted or we're winning games over a short term," he added."I want to create a process that can have real sustainability to it, and when we eventually do go up a level, it's a process that we can continue and adapt."You have to be adaptable when you have a process, it's never going to be too rigid or too stubborn."I'm someone who does like to listen and get people's opinion and adapt from there whilst having a core set of principles."
