Driver who claimed his electric Jaguar I-Pace accelerated 'on its own' on the motorway appears in court accused of fraud
A motorist who claimed his luxury electric car accelerated 'on its own' on the motorway has made his first appearance in court charged with fraud. Nathan Owen, 32, from Prestatyn, North Wales, called police for assistance on March 6 last year to report his Jaguar I-Pace vehicle was speeding out of control and the brakes were not working. Officers scrambled to intercept the vehicle, which had travelled along the eastbound carriageways of the M57, M62 and M58 motorways. On Wednesday, Owen attended Liverpool Magistrates' Court where he indicated not guilty pleas to dangerous driving, intentionally or recklessly causing a public nuisance and two counts of fraud. One charge of fraud meanwhile accuses Owen of falsely informing a car finance company, CA Auto Finance, that his Jaguar I-PACE was 'accelerating on its own', with its brakes also being 'unresponsive', in order to make a gain of more than £4,000. It is also said that he made the same claims to several national newspapers, with the intention of causing loss to the Jaguar company or exposing it to risk of loss. Prosecutor Renee Southern told the court that it was the Crown's case that the defendant had 'persistently and dishonestly' claimed the vehicle was defective. She said Owen wanted to 'get rid' of the vehicle and thus avoid further payments totalling £4,426 to the finance company. Police made manoeuvres to box the Jaguar in, which led to motorway closures and substantial delays, the court heard. Appearing in the dock wearing a black zip-up top and glasses and sporting short dark hair and a beard, he spoke to confirm his name, address and date of birth before pleading not guilty to all four counts. Owen, of The Grove, was released on unconditional bail to attend a further hearing at Liverpool Crown Court on September 10, when he is expected to enter formal pleas.

The incident comes nearly three years after Garrett flipped his Porsche 911 Turbo S multiple times in a single-car crash. He was traveling 65 mph in a 45 mph zone before driving off the side of the road, striking a ditch and fire hydrant. It's the eighth time Garrett has been cited for speeding since being drafted first overall in 2017 out of Texas A&M. The 2023 Defensive Player of the Year has been a force since entering the league. In eight seasons with the Browns, Garrett is a six-time Pro Bowl selection and four-time first-team All-Pro. He has 352 tackles and 102.5 sacks in 117 games (114 starts). Travel chaos as major motorway closes after lorry bursts into flames - causing miles of tailbacks
A section of the M25 motorway in Essex near the Dartford Crossing has been closed after a lorry burst into flames. National Highways said it was forced to shut the road in both directions between Junction 29 for Romford and Junction 30 for the crossing after a HGV "fully laden with car tyres" caught fire. A diversion route has been created, with delays of at least one hour in the anti-clockwise direction. An image of the scene posted on social media shows flames and a large amount of smoke billowing into the air. Firefighters from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service are tackling the blaze near the Thames crossing that connects Kent and Essex. It said the tyres being carried by the lorry are "alight" and "producing large amounts of smoke". Plans are being put in place to allow vehicles caught within the closure to move away. National Highways said: "Due to the nature of the fire, it is still anticipated that the road will remain closed throughout the day, with resurfacing likely to be required." The Dartford Crossing consists of a bridge and two tunnels connecting Thurrock in Essex with Dartford. Up to 180,000 vehicles use the crossing on the busiest days. More to follow.
