Petronas Ownership Remains Under Federal Govt, Steps Taken To Enhance Participation Of States -- Azalina
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- The ownership of Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) remains with the federal government, although steps were taken to enhance the participation of states through strategic collaboration platforms, joint project implementation, and involvement in the value chain, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.
Azalina said the federal government's approach is aligned with an inclusive federal structure and ensures sustained benefits for all parties.
The minister said that the federal government is currently the sole owner of Petronas, which is incorporated under the Companies Act 1965 as the national oil and gas company.
'The Petroleum Development Act 1974 (Act 144) entrusts Petronas with ownership of petroleum, along with the exclusive rights, powers, freedoms, and privileges to explore, manage, and develop the country's petroleum resources, whether onshore, offshore, or in Malaysian waters,' she said in a response posted on the Parliament's website today.
Azalina was responding to Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan (GRS-Keningau), who asked whether the government could consider distributing 50 per cent shares in Petronas to oil- and gas-producing territories and states, namely Sarawak, Sabah, Terengganu, and Kelantan.
According to Jeffrey, the distribution is a fundamental step to strengthen the Malaysian Federation moving forward, while easing politicisation and dissatisfaction over oil and gas rights.
Azalina said that although the ownership of Petronas is under the federal government, the current approach allows producing states to receive direct benefits from the petroleum industry through cash payments and various forms of commercial cooperation.
'At the same time, overall revenues from the sector are fairly distributed across the country in line with national development needs,' she added.

The two presidents held a joint press conference after concluding their talks at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, the most populous city in the US state of Alaska. – AFP file photo ANCHORAGE (Aug 16): United States (US) President Donald Trump said on Friday he had a 'very productive meeting' with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, but the summit ended without a deal on the Ukraine crisis, reported Xinhua. The two presidents held a joint press conference after concluding their talks at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, the most populous city in the US state of Alaska. Trump said they agreed on 'many points,' adding that the two sides made some headway, though no deal was reached. Putin said he agreed that Ukraine's security should be ensured, and an agreement he reached with Trump would pave the way toward peace in Ukraine. Standing side by side on stage for just over 10 minutes, both leaders indicated that progress had been made during their face-to-face talks, but no concrete deal was produced. Putin said the negotiations took place in a 'constructive atmosphere of mutual respect' and that a personal meeting between the heads of state had been 'long overdue.' 'Everything that's happening is a tragedy for us and a terrible wound,' and Russia is sincerely interested in ending it, said Putin. He stressed that efforts must address the 'primary causes' of the conflict and warned Ukraine and European countries not to 'throw a wrench in the works.' Trump described the talks as 'extremely productive' and said 'great progress' had been made. The meeting lasted about three hours. It was the first face-to-face meeting between the presidents of the two countries since 2021. – Bernama-Xinhua Donald Trump peace talks Russia-Ukraine war Vladimir Putin
