Infant twins buried together in Roman Croatia may have died from lead poisoning

Nearly 2,000 years ago, fraternal twin infants — one boy and one girl — were buried facing each other in a cemetery in what is now Croatia, a new study finds.
It's unclear why the twins died, but lead poisoning may have played a role, the researchers wrote in a study published in the April issue of the Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports.
"It is one of the very few double burials known in Croatia and is the only double burial of very young individuals in this cemetery," study first author Anna Osterholtz, a bioarchaeologist at Mississippi State University, told Live Science in an email.
The burial ground, known as Dragulin cemetery, was initially excavated in 2016, when construction for a parking lot revealed a handful of ancient stone urns, the researchers wrote in the study. The cemetery is in the modern city of Trogir (Tragurium in Roman times), a UNESCO World Heritage site. This area became a part of the Roman province of Illyricum after Julius Caesar's civil war in 47 B.C.
An investigation into the "short life and death of these siblings" revealed that they were buried sometime between the end of the first and the late second century A.D., the researchers wrote in the study.

An ancient DNA (aDNA) analysis showed that the infants were fraternal twins who were either stillborn or died within two months of their birth.
"The burial posture of both twins suggests that they were important to their family and buried with significant care," Osterholtz said. "This is the first case of fraternal twins from the Roman period in Croatia that has been confirmed via aDNA analysis."
Both individuals showed signs of chronic metabolic disease, or diseases caused by nutritional deficiency (like scurvy or rickets) or the body's inability to utilize nutrients.
Given the twins' young age at death, their nutrition would have come entirely from their mother, either through the placenta in the womb or breast milk after birth. So, it's possible that their metabolic diseases reflected their mother's poor health — meaning she was either malnourished or suffered from a metabolic disease herself.
Another idea is that the twins died from lead poisoning. Lead was pervasive in the Roman world; it was used in pipes and cookware. A lead compound was even used as a sweetener in wine and as a preservative for fruits. The twins' skeletal conditions are consistent with the effects of lead exposure, such as increased bone porosity and periosteal reactions, or new bone formation that happens when bones weakened from lead poisoning are fractured, the researchers wrote in the study. Chronic lead exposure can disrupt metabolic processes like hemoglobin synthesis, sperm production and neural function, and it can also hinder nutrient absorption, which could manifest in both the mother and the developing infants.
"Lead exposure through breast milk is a known cause of elevated infant blood lead levels," Amy Pyle-Eilola, an assistant professor of pathology at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, who was not involved in the study, told Live Science in an email. "Additionally, there is a known correlation between elevated blood lead and metabolic bone disease in children."

Although the authors did not test the twins' remains for lead, they highlighted several cases of metabolic disorders in Roman-era children with high levels of lead in their teeth whose remains were found near Tragurium.
"So, if the mother had a significant lead exposure, which is a realistic possibility based on studies examining the same general time and location, it is absolutely possible that the lead was passed to the twins during pregnancy and/or via breastmilk, and the resulting elevation in lead could cause the observed bone disease," Pyle-Eilola added.
However, it's hard to know why the twins' health was so poor; there are many other nutritional, genetic and developmental issues that could account for the metabolic bone disease described in this study, Pyle-Eilola said.

In Gabon's sprawling forest, archaeologists dig for ancient clues that could unlock the secrets of how prehistoric humans lived and interacted in the changing landscape of central Africa. Two billion years ago, the eastern Gabonese region of Lastourville was covered by a vast ocean. But that has long given way to dense forest and dolomite cliffs dotted with caves, within which scientists have unearthed traces of human life dating back to 25,000 years BC. Off the beaten track even for archaeologists, the Youmbidi rock shelter, a cavern typical of those chosen by prehistoric humans to set up their homes, is the focus for French geoarchaeologist Richard Oslisly's team. Among their finds: a stone tool which could have been used for cutting or making fibres dating to before 10,000 BC. An arrowhead has also been unearthed, as has a collection of dolomite, quartz and jasper shards, cut up to 10,000 years ago by the cave's inhabitants. "The vast majority of research in Africa has taken place in open landscapes such as the Sahara, Sahel or Egypt," said Oslisly, who has spent 45 years working in central Africa. "They said to me 'there's nothing in the forest' (but) I took up the challenge of finding out what was happening there," he added. "We realise there is a very close relationship between man and nature in these forests, where people have lived for a very long time," Oslisly said. The Youmbidi cave -- where scientists have recorded 12,000 years of continuous human habitation -- is an enticing spot for the archeologists. "We don't know at all how these people lived, what their way of life was, what their names were, what their languages were," said Geoffroy de Saulieu from France's IRD Research Institute for Development. "Our research will help us to know a little more," he added. - Jigsaw puzzle - After a month of digging and careful sorting of every stone, charcoal remnant, bone and other treasure buried below the cave, the team has elements to help decipher the past. De Saulieu said it was like a jigsaw puzzle. "You have to... gather the smallest clues, place them end to end to gradually reconstruct a whole universe that has disappeared and which is, nevertheless, at the origin of the way of life in central Africa today," said the expert, currently attached to the National Agency of National Parks of Gabon. One of the oldest bits of pottery found in central Africa, which dated to more than 6,500 years ago, is among this year's finds. Human-looking teeth that could allow DNA to be extracted in what would prove a significant leap in research have also excited archaeologists. And, like all the artefacts, a bead likely made between 3,300 and 4,900 years ago from a snail shell also offers precious insight as a "very humble but beautiful witness" of the epoch in question. Dispelling stereotypical images of prehistoric Man, it suggests people had "real customs, a real civilisation and art of living," de Saulieu said. The pottery "shows that these societies weren't immobile, they had launched themselves into technical innovations", he added. The discoveries fan his fascination for the richness of "the social life which existed in the region's forests". - Resilience - Glimpses into an ancient lost world can also be useful for tackling present-day challenges, the experts said. During the Holocene period which dates back the past 12,000 years, "central Africa has experienced very significant changes in climate, hydrology and vegetation," said paleoclimatologist Yannick Garcin, also from the IRD and involved in the Youmbidi dig. The hope is that the cave will unlock an understanding of "the resilience of human populations in the past and how they were able to adapt to climate changes that could have been drastic", he said. Central Africa for that reason "deserves major development in terms of research", Oslisly argued. Understanding what happened in prehistoric times can help scientists today react to modern-day issues, he added. "Good studies on the relationship between Man and the environment in the past will allow us to react better to the environmental changes that are ahead of us," he said. lnf/hpn/kjm/cw

Remains of an extinct breed of Bronze Age cattle have been discovered by archaeologists in a cave in the Yorkshire Dales. Researchers working with cave explorers uncovered the remnants of an auroch while surveying a number of caverns and sinkholes near Ingleborough. The team also found evidence of the area being used as a human burial site during the Neolithic period. A spokesperson said the discoveries had helped shed light on how the caves were used by those who lived and farmed in the Dales prehistory. Aurochs were once found across Europe before habitat loss and hunting wiped them out in the 17th Century. They are regraded as the wild ancestor of modern cattle. The Ingleborough Cave Archaeology Project is part of a £3m scheme, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, aimed at securing the future of upland commons in the Yorkshire Dales, Dartmoor, the Lake District and the Shropshire Hills. It highlighted the important role cavers play in uncovering underground history, with some of the chosen cave sites requiring specialist skills to access. Rick Peterson, a caving archaeologist at the University of Central Lancashire said: "It's often experienced local cavers who are the first to encounter archaeological finds such as these as they are the only ones who can access the caves. "This partnership now ensures that any discoveries made during recreational caving are officially documented." As well as examining the history of Ingleborough, the project also looked at ways to engage today's farmers in sustainable and adaptive land management practices. Ingleborough is one of the few places in England where "commoning" traditions remain with around a dozen farmers still grazing sheep on the land under rights dating back to the Magna Carta. Project officer Claire Braeburn said: "Ingleborough has a longstanding history as common land, so we wanted to see if the caves held evidence of just how long humans began farming on the fell. "Over half of England was common land, but now it's just 3%. This project has helped us understand more about human interaction with the common and the land's longstanding biodiversity. "It has shown how important preserving these ancient practices is or we risk losing them forever."
