Maldives undertakes reforms to attract investors
KUALA LUMPUR: The Maldives is inviting Malaysian companies to explore new investment opportunities in strategic sectors, following significant legal reforms aimed at attracting foreign investors.
Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said that among the key initiatives was the enactment of a new Foreign Investment Law in December 2024.
'The new legislation, aligned with international best practices, ensures robust investor protection, transparency, and predictability while giving legal force to both bilateral and multilateral investment treaties.
'This is not merely a legislative reform. It is a clear signal that the Maldives is serious about welcoming the world's best partners on trusted, solid grounds,' he said at the Maldives-Malaysia Business Forum 2025 here today.
Highlighting Malaysia's global competitiveness and strong commitment to sustainable development, Muizzu said there was tremendous potential for Malaysian companies to contribute meaningfully to the Maldives' growth story while unlocking real value in return.
'Sectors that may attract investors include real estate, tourism, logistics, renewable energy, and Special Economic Zones (SEZs).
'Our revitalised SEZs offer incentives designed to attract forward-looking investors, and our renewable energy initiatives align with the global shift towards sustainability,' he said.
Muizzu added that the Maldives' strategic location along key shipping routes and its thriving tourism sector present significant opportunities for Malaysian businesses seeking expansion into the maritime and logistics sectors.
The Maldives president is on his first official visit to Malaysia lasting four days, since assuming the presidency in November 2023, at the invitation of the Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar was also present at the event, where he delivered a keynote address.
In 2024, Malaysia's total trade with the Maldives increased by 4.3 per cent to US$189 million (RM862.7 million) from US$180.9 million (RM827.3 million) in 2023, making the archipelagic nation Malaysia's sixth-largest trading partner among South Asian countries.

Govt to fast-track first national sepak takraw academy
KUALA LUMPUR: The government has agreed to expedite the establishment of Malaysia's first national sepak takraw academy, with completion targeted by the end of this year. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the decision reflects the government's commitment to strengthening traditional sports and nurturing homegrown talent to compete at the highest levels. "We will make the sepak takraw academy a reality in this country. "I believe sepak takraw, like football, is a sport that makes us proud, not just nationally but also regionally and globally. "The academy can be completed before the end of this year because the Madani government is a government that works hard," he said in his speech at the launch of National Youth Day here today. Also present were Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, Deputy Minister Adam Adli Abdul Halim, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, and Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul. Anwar said Yeoh had requested an allocation of RM6 million for the project, which would serve as a platform to develop young athletes and elevate the sport to greater heights. He also acknowledged the growing interest among Malaysian youth in both traditional and modern recreational activities, saying these pursuits should be supported as long as they remain within cultural values and norms. "This is part of our cultural heritage — from cities to kampungs (villages), from youth who dance for leisure to those who play futsal and football. "As long as it stays within the boundaries of proper conduct, we support it," he said. He said the unity government would continue prioritising youth empowerment through sports, the arts, and positive community engagement, in line with the Madani vision. Anwar also announced that the government has agreed to allocate RM4 million to the Malaysian Youth Council (MBM) to strengthen youth development. He said the decision followed a request by the council's president, Mohd Izzat Afifi Abdul Hamid. "This is an increase of RM1 million from last year's allocation, which saw an additional RM3 million channelled to the Youth and Sports Ministry.

'To me, he was more than a journalist, he was a true friend, a sharp thinker and a genuine fighter for media freedom grounded in principles and accountability,' Anwar said in a Facebook post. He expressed hope that the late Rozaid's spirit and values would continue to inspire young media practitioners to uphold truth, honour ethics and strengthen democracy. At the HAWANA 2025 highlight celebration held at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) here today, Anwar presented the HAWANA 2025 Special Award to Rozaid's son, Roz Ariffin, witnessed by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and over 1,000 local and international media practitioners. Also present were Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, Bernama Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, and Bernama Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also the Project Director of HAWANA 2025. Rozaid, who died on Aug 18, 2024 from a heart attack, is remembered as a highly influential figure in Malaysian journalism, with over four decades of experience in the media industry. He was appointed Director of Media and Strategic Communications at the PMO on May 23, 2023, where he played a key role in overseeing government communications and media strategies.
