Jamie Foxx and Kevin Hart lead Hollywood in grieving The Cosby Show star Malcolm-Jamal Warner's shock death

Daily Mail21-07-2025
Hollywood is mourning the devastating loss of The Cosby Show star Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who tragically passed away at age 54 after drowning while on a family vacation in Costa Rica.
According to Costa Rican authorities, Warner drowned off the coast near Cocles Beach on Sunday, July 20. His official cause of death has been confirmed as asphyxia.
Best known for his role as Theodore Huxtable, the only son of Bill Cosby 's character, Heathcliff Huxtable, Warner became a beloved household name during his time on the beloved NBC sitcom, which ran from 1984 to 1992.
His legacy as a cultural icon was cemented not only through his Emmy-nominated performance, but also through decades of work across television, music, and film.
News of his sudden death sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry, prompting a wave of tributes from colleagues, co-stars, and fellow performers who remembered him not just as a gifted actor, but as a generous spirit and trusted friend.
Jamie Foxx was among the first to honor Warner, sharing a brief but powerful message on Instagram.
'Speechless on this one rest in power, my brother,' he captioned his tribute.
Kevin Hart, clearly shaken, reacted to the news in a comment under People's Instagram post.
'WTF…. Wow. This is heartbreaking,' the comedian wrote. RIP king…. Woooow.'
Comedian and actor Eddie Griffin, who co-starred with Warner on the sitcom Malcolm & Eddie, posted a moving tribute to his Instagram Story alongside a photo of his longtime friend.
'My Big little Brother,' he wrote.
Marlee Matlin, who directed an episode of Accused in which Warner guest-starred, also paid tribute on Instagram. Sharing a photo from a 2023 panel they appeared on together, she wrote:
'I am so sad to read of the untimely passing of Malcolm Jamal Warner. He was the nicest guy and it was a privilege to have been in the same company with him, sharing a directors' panel along with @HowardmGordon and Michael Chiklis. My heart goes out to his family and friends. RIP Malcolm.'
Other stars took to social media to express their shock and grief, including Ricki Lake, Jennie Garth, Patti LaBelle and Mario Lopez, who shared broken heart emojis.
Daily Mail has reached out to Warner's representatives for comment, but they have not yet responded.
While the exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, experts note that some beaches in Costa Rica can pose serious risks depending on conditions.
Though many areas are safe for swimming, others are known for powerful currents and rip tides that demand caution.
According to WedMD, Asphyxia 'happens when your body doesn't get enough oxygen to keep you from passing.'
Breathing impairment, due to water inhalation, can cause the condition, which can result in unconsciousness or death.
Although it is unknown what caused him to drown, the waters in Costa Rica can be dangerous, depending on the specific beach and conditions.

The actor, best known for his role as Theodore Huxtable on the beloved NBC sitcom, appeared in all eight seasons from 1984 to 1992.
At the time, Warner was just a teenager, but his performance earned widespread acclaim, including a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series at the 1986 Primetime Emmy Awards.
Warner is survived by his wife and young daughter, born in 2017.
While he occasionally shared glimpses of his family life on social media, he chose to keep their identities private, opting not to publicly reveal their names.
His character, Theo, was based on Bill Cosby's real-life son, Ennis Cosby, and was portrayed with depth and sensitivity.
In the show, Theo is diagnosed with dyslexia after struggling academically during his freshman year at New York University—an arc that resonated with many viewers; seen in 1990

Beyond The Cosby Show, Warner carved out a successful and diverse career in both comedy and drama.
He starred as Malcolm McGee in the UPN sitcom Malcolm & Eddie (1996–2000) opposite Eddie Griffin, and later headlined BET's Reed Between the Lines from 2011 to 2015 as Dr. Alex Reed.
His television credits also included recurring roles and guest appearances on shows like Sons of Anarchy, Jeremiah, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and Community. Warner also voiced the Producer character on the educational children's series The Magic School Bus.
Prior to his breakout role, Warner, who was born in New Jersey, he attended a performing arts school in New York City.
Cosby personally selected Warner to play his son.
In 2023, Warner insisted he and the rest of the cast of The Cosby Show 'still very proud of' their hit series.
'We share a unique experience that keeps us lovingly bonded no matter how much time goes between seeing or hearing from each other,' he told People.
'Regardless of how some people may feel about the show now, I'm still proud of the legacy and having been a part of such an iconic show that had such a profound impact on — first and foremost, Black culture — but also American culture,' Warner explained, nodding to the rape, sexual assault and sexual harassment claims against his former onscreen dad.

Suite Life of Zack & Cody fans left in tears after star's admission about the cast

Suite Life of Zack & Cody star Kim Rhodes has left fans 'in tears' as she talked about quietly watching her on-screen sons Cole and Dylan Sprouse 's careers explode from a distance and not forcing a relationship with them. The 56-year-old actress played mom Carey Martin in the popular Disney Channel sitcom, which aired from 2005 to 2008. In a new interview, Kim revealed that she hasn't stayed in contact with the twins, but instead watches their career with 'delight' and 'pride.' 'I follow them on social media,' she said. 'I am aware of everything they're doing, but I never want them to feel like I'm an obligation.' Speaking to People, she she continued: 'I follow them with delight. I follow them with pride. 'I love watching them launch into who they are, but I don't expect them to necessarily reciprocate.' Social media users, although saddened by Kim's admission, branded her 'selfless' and 'supportive.' Some also called for Cole and Dylan to reach out to her. Taking to X, formerly Twitter, one said: 'I'm sorry but this thought of her brings me to tears… this how my mother used to talk to me like… 'She is proud of you but she also doesn't expect you to care for her in old age as an expectations…. Kim Rhodes always be that mom everyone should have.' 'This is actually kinda sad,' another wrote. A third continued: 'Wow. The Suite Life era was magical. Hearing Kim speak with so much grace just makes me appreciate that show even more.' A fourth added: 'That's such a kind and selfless way to look at it. Pure class.' 'It's nice that she's still supportive regardless, hopefully she'll reunite with them at some point,' another wrote. 'Some kids just don't appreciate their mothers until it's too late,' a sixth penned. The Suite Life of Zack & Cody follows 12-year-old twin brothers who live in the luxurious Tipton Hotel in Boston, where their divorced mother Carey sings and performs in the hotel lounge. The identical twins often cause mischief at their residence. The series also starred Brenda Song, Ashley Tisdale, and Phill Lewis. Last year, Kim revealed that she became pregnant during filming of the series, which led to various fat jokes on the show. During an appearance on the 90s/2000s podcast Back to the Best, she said that Dylan kept 'skipping over' the joke all week, but when it came to the taping, he stood his ground and fired a shot at the writers. 'One of my favorite memories is Dylan had a line that was a fat joke, and he just kept skipping over it. It was in the middle of a chunk of dialogue. So he kept skipping over this laugh line,' she said. 'Finally we get to in front of the studio audience, and he skips it. The executive producer screams "Cut." It's the director's job to cut by the way. 'He goes, "Cut. Dylan, say the line." He goes, "I would not disrespect any woman that way let alone this woman. You write something funny, and I'll say it." 'That's my little man. They're both my little men.' Following her role in The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, Kim went on to have a recurring guest role in the series Supernatural, playing Sheriff Jody Mills. She also appeared in Gortimer: Gibbon's Life on Normal Street, Colony, and Criminal Minds. Earlier this week, Kim collaborated with M&M's for their PB&J Packed Lunch Specials. Alongside the campaign, she revealed that she now lives in 'the middle of nowhere' and volunteers at an animal sanctuary. She said: 'I water goats now. That's what I do! I pick up eggs, I rescue beat-up chickens... that's my life.

Naked Gun review — Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson are irresistible

When Liam Neeson was announced as the star of this reboot of the slapstick classic, I couldn't help thinking of the Ricky Gervais sitcom Life's Too Short. In one episode Neeson, playing himself, comes to the office of Gervais, also playing himself, and says, 'I'm thinking of doing some comedy. I'm a funny guy, aren't I?' The joke then was that Neeson definitely wasn't funny; the worry before The Naked Gun came out was that the joke might be right. His career is full of tough guys and noble heroes, but not stuffed with rib-tickling mirth merchants. What a joy to report, then, that Neeson really is funny. Taking over from Leslie Nielsen, he plays Frank Drebin Jr, the son of the character Nielsen played in the Police Squad! series and three Naked Gun films. It really works, and not just because the two men have the same initials. Like Nielsen, who died in 2010, Neeson has comic timing, presence — even spoof cops need to look and sound like cops — and chemistry with his femme fatale, Beth (a game Pamela Anderson). Most importantly he has the ability to keep a straight face through an absolute cavalcade of sight gags, groan-worthy puns and weapons-grade buffonery. The volume of jokes was a hallmark of the original films and the director of this one, Akiva Schaffer, has very much stuck to that template. Not all of them stick but a good proportion do, and you're gradually worn down by the sheer weight of silliness until resistance is useless. 'I guess you can't fight City Hall,' Drebin says. 'No, it's a building,' a colleague replies. We get an eked-out food poisoning sequence ('I'm gonna ruin another suit'), a running gag in which our hero is handed a cup of coffee by everyone he meets and the never-to-be-erased sight of Neeson, 73, disguised as a schoolgirl. By the time a villain spies on Drebin and Beth — plus their dog — with thermal imaging goggles and gets a whole lot more than he bargained for, I was hooting helplessly. Neeson, like Sean Connery before him, appears to have been granted special licence to use his natural accent but those Ballymena vowels don't distract — inch-perfect realism was probably not the aim of a film that features a psychotic snowman. The casting of Drebin's love interest is fabulous — where Nielsen had Priscilla Presley, Neeson has Anderson, and their rapport, on and off screen, has set the internet ablaze. Whether or not they are a couple in real life, they look like they really do find each other irresistible — and hilarious. Anderson plays Beth, a writer of 'made-up' true crime novels who, Neeson's gumshoe-style voiceover informs us, has 'a bottom that would make any toilet beg for the brown'. She, too, is admirably deadpan, even when singing cacophonous scat jazz in a supper club. Schaffer, a stalwart of the Lonely Island comedy group and a childhood friend of Andy Samberg's, makes several nods to the earlier Naked Gun films, including Drebin's propensity to obliviously mow down pedestrians and cyclists while driving. The director has grabbed what could have been a poisoned chalice and downed it in one. When Drebin gazes at a portrait of his late father and says, 'I wanna be just like you but at the same time be completely new and original', we all know what he is referring to. This film isn't particularly new or original but it's just like its predecessors, which is more than enough.★★★★☆15, 85minIn cinemas from Aug 1 Make Wednesday your go-to cinema day. Another agreed, sharing: 'They are really the nepo family.' Robert's famous family includes his uncle Francis Ford Coppola, cousin Nicholas Cage, cousin Sofia Coppola and his brother, Jason Schwartzman. Her mother, 54, is known for directing acclaimed movies like Lost in Translation and Marie Antoinette. And Romy's father, 48, is the lead singer of the indie band Phoenix. For her 16th birthday, none other than Jacob Elordi presented her with her cake since the Australian actor was the star of her mother's film Priscilla. Robert tends to keep a fairy private life, and is still performing with Rooney. The indie band, which formed in 1999, had a breakthrough with their self-titled debut album, Rooney, which was released in 2003.
