Earthquake hits Hollywood as stars gather for Oscars afterparty
A magnitude 3.9 earthquake has hit Hollywood as some of the globe's top stars began celebrating after the Oscars. The earthquake's epicentre was measured in North Hollywood, just miles from where the awards ceremony was hosted at the Dolby Theatre. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. The quake struck shortly after 22:00 local time as celebrities were gathering at the popular Vanity Fair afterparty. Those in the area reported a sudden jolt of energy, with some screaming and seeing high-rise buildings wobbling like jelly.
The US Geological Survey (USGS), which tracks such events, said the earthquake was felt miles across Los Angeles. There was no tsunami alert issued as a result of the relatively minor earthquake.
The Los Angeles Fire Department said that the earthquake was felt across downtown Los Angeles but the agency was not entering into "Earthquake Mode" over the incident. For stronger earthquakes, first responders and officials do assessments of the area to ensure there is no structural damage to buildings and infrastructure. Last month, there was a magnitude 3.7 earthquake that struck the nearby Malibu area. In December, a strong magnitude 7 earthquake jolted northern California and caused a short tsunami alert for those in northern California and southern Oregon. BBC correspondents covering the Academy Awards in the heart of Hollywood reported fierce shaking and even some screams as the sudden jolt scared visitors. To some, it sounded like a bomb went off with the rumble. One resident called it the biggest earthquake she'd felt and was surprised it was only a magnitude 3.9. "I felt that in my bones," she remarked. The BBC's Emma Vardy said she was retouching her makeup for some final Oscars filming when the quake struck. Her diamond earrings wobbled in the mirror and she realized the high-rise she was in was shaking. "I have felt a lot of quakes over the past two years in Los Angeles but currently, I am on the 15th floor of our media centre in Hollywood," she remarked. "Feeling a building of that size move around like jelly is quite an experience." Sam Granville and Emma Vardy contributed to this report.

Jaw-dropping moment BBC radio host drops the F-bomb live on air as he is hit by cramp - then shamefacedly tells listeners: 'I went on a course yesterday to be better on the radio'
A BBC radio host was caught swearing live on air as he is hit by a cramp, just one day after going on a course to be a better host. Ian Skye, the mid-morning presenter of BBC Radio Derby, was left red faced after his screams were heard live on air when he thought his producers had cut away from him. In the background, the presenter screams: 'Ow, f***ing hell,' before the show cuts back to the presenters chatting after a song had played. As his co-host joked they had been on a training course the day before to improve their presenting skills, saying: 'I don't think they suggested suddenly getting unbearably agonising cramp and shouting really loud on the radio.' Ian stuttered in response, saying: 'No, that's probably not what I should have come in and done today.' He then added: 'Can I just say, if before that amazing song from Kate Bush, and I say if. You'd have had to be deaf if you didn't hear a rude word. 'I really profusely apologise. You know when something happens and it's just instinct. My very, very calm producer said 'you're still on the radio, Ian.' TV critic Scott Bryan tweeted about the incident with the words: 'We now cross over to BBC Radio Derby.' And people online have immediately had their say on the hilarious moment. One person said: 'Known Ian for 30 yeas. He is a good guy. This is a moment and it has passed. Why we still feel the need to pretend to be shocked in a 24/7 unedited world is beyond me. Plus, it is possibly one of the most entertaining things on BBC derby in years!' Another added: 'I honestly think this is my moment of the year.' A third agreed: 'I have laughed so hard at this so many times, thank you for posting it, thank you so much.' A fourth chimed: 'Perfectly managed. Swore, made a joke. Didn't make a big deal of it. Really well handled.' However some people were not as pleased by the blunder. One person said: 'Tens of people in the Derby and the Derby area will have heard a swearword, and you're laughing.' While another wrote: 'Did not apologise straight away, made a joke instead. Ofcom warning.' Ian has been a radio presenter for over 13 years, having worked at Radio Wyvern in Worcester as well as stations in Kent, Newcastle and Teesside. It was at Radio Wyvern that he actually chose his name Skye. His real name is Wickens but his bosses said Wickens wouldn't work in a sung jingle. He liked the Isle of Skye, so Ian Skye was born. The episode has echoes of Maryam Moshiri raising her middle finger at the camera during a BBC news broadcast in December 2023. The clip, which went viral, showed her raising her eyebrows and tilting her head as she raised her middle finger at the camera for a few seconds as she came on screen as the intro music comes to an end. She said about the incident: 'Hey everyone, yesterday just before the top of the hour I was joking around a bit with the team in the gallery. 'I was pretending to count down as the director was counting me down from 10-0.. including the fingers to show the number. So from 10 fingers held up to one. 'When we got to 1 I turned finger around as a joke and did not realise that this would be caught on camera. It was a private joke with the team and I'm so sorry it went out on air!'

Grimacing man rages 'it's an absolute mess - disgusting!' after BBC home makeover from hell that 'couldn't be any worse'
A grimacing man raged 'it's an absolute mess!' after a BBC home makeover from hell that 'couldn't be any worse'. Your Home In Their Hands, presented by Celia Sawyer, aired on our screens for one series between 2014 and 2015 on BBC One. And couple John and Rachel Geoghegan appeared on Your Home In Their Hands 10 years ago. The pair had opposing preferences, with Rachel wanting more colour, while John was a fan of more plain interiors. At the end of the episode interior designer Celia Sawyer took them around their new home - and they were very pleased with the living room. However things took a nasty turn when they were shown their new bedroom. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. John couldn't hide how unimpressed he was with the interior moments after opening their eyes. Celia asked: 'What do you think Rachel?... You've got your colour!' After a very awkward silence she replied: 'Yeah I do. I like the wardrobes and...' John chimed in: 'Nah it's too much. For me it's too busy. I wouldn't have done anything like it and I don't like it. 'You're supposed to be able to go to sleep in a bedroom and it's like a kid's play area. 'I think it looks horrendous. It doesn't look anything like a bedroom. 'Sorry it's a big thumbs down from me. It's hideous. I think its even too much for Rachel if she were to tell the truth.' Celia was keen to find out her thoughts and asked: 'Is it, Rachel?' John didn't hold back and told the presenter: 'Nah it's too much. For me it's too busy. I wouldn't have done anything like it and I don't like it' Rachel sheepishly confessed: 'I do like... I do like the bed and the wardrobes... 'I like the theme of it.' Celia added: 'So overall you quite like it?' 'Hmm... yeah,' Rachel said. A very unimpressed John simply chimed in: 'It's rank. I don't like it at all. Definitely not.' Celia tried to change the mood and told him: 'I think Rachel likes it though, John? 'I know you're telling her she doesn't, but I think she does!' John told the presenter: 'I'll leave it to her.' Celia hit back: 'But you're answering for her! I haven't heard much out of Rachel's mouth actually. Come on, Rachel!' 'I think it'll grow on us, I like, I like the bed and the wardrobes, I did ask for colour,' Rachel said. John told the presenter: 'If Rachel likes it, so be it.' 'So if Rachel likes it, can you keep it the same?' Celia asked. And John told her: 'Not for long.' Celia then questioned John and said: 'So you were going to accept what Rachel wanted, you said if she's happy she's fine, what you're saying now, it isn't fine?' John didn't hold back with his opinion and told the host: 'It's rank. Horrible. Nah. Sorry. It's not for me.' Celia wanted to know if he had a message for the designer, to which he said: 'Don't touch the other room.' After taking a moment and reflecting away from the bedroom, Rachel said: 'We took a chance when we handed the keys over. She's done colour. What I asked for. It might grow on you.' John simply replied: 'Fungus grows - that's horrible.' Many rushed to share their thoughts on whether Rachel actually liked the new look, while others couldn't contain their laughter. 'The first room was horrendous as well and I do believe the wife hates the bedroom as well. She looks like she is holding back the tears.' '"It might grow on you." "Fungus grows." [laughing emojis].' '"I've not heard much from Rachel" Rachel can't speak as she's holding tears [laughing emojis].' 'Lmaoooo 'So, What message do you have for the designer?' — 'Dont touch the other room'.' Many rushed to the comments section on YouTube to share their thoughts on the moment that happened back in 2015 'The level of second hand embarrassment here was overwhelming [laughing emojis].' 'Rachel looks like she's holding back tears. I agree with the husband. I think Rachel's too polite because she did ask for colour.' 'I'd LOVE to know what happened after the cameras stopped rolling. What the couple did next?' The synopsis of Your Home In Their Hands reads: 'Makeover show in which desperate homeowners hand over their door keys to amateur interior designers, hoping they can solve their design dilemmas.'
