Jorge Costa, Champions League-winning Porto captain, dies aged 53
The former defender, who was serving as Porto's director of professional football in his second season in the role, was rushed to hospital but could not be saved.
'Throughout his life, both on and off the pitch, Jorge Costa embodied the values that define FC Porto: dedication, leadership, passion and an unshakeable spirit of conquest,' the club said in a statement. 'He left his mark on generations of fans and became a symbol of Portismo.'
Over his career, Costa played 530 games in all competitions – 383 for Porto and 50 for Portugal's national team. He earned the nickname Animal from teammate Fernando Couto during their partnership in central defence. As captain, he led Porto to Uefa Cup glory in 2003 and a Champions League triumph in 2004 under manager José Mourinho.
The defender was one of six players to win five consecutive Portuguese league championships with Porto, alongside Aloísio, Ljubinko Drulović, Paulinho Santos, Rui Barros and Folha.
Costa returned to the club in April 2024 as director under their new president André Villas-Boas. 'Jorge Costa's legacy will always remain alive in the memory of all Porto fans. You will never be forgotten, Captain,' the club added.
Charlton Athletic, the London club where Costa spent half the 2001-02 season on loan to play Premier League football, making 24 appearances, released a short social media statement, saying: 'We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former player Jorge Costa at the age of 53. The thoughts of everyone at Charlton Athletic are with Jorge's family and friends at this difficult time.'

Son Heung-min openly admitted Los Angeles FC were not his first choice destination after deciding to bring his 10-year chapter at Tottenham to an emotional close. The 33-year-old was officially unveiled by his new side on Wednesday after completing a move worth over £20million - a record fee paid by an MLS club. 'They've been absolutely working so hard to get me here to join LAFC,' Son said. 'If I'm honest, it was not my first choice but John [Thorrington, LAFC general manager] was the first call when the season finished and John changed my mind. 'He changed my heart. 'I'm so happy to see all the Korean fans, I was at the game and I saw you supporting like crazy and I wanted to run on the pitch and show my performance. 'I'm here to win and I will perform. 'I will definitely show you something exciting in… are we calling it football or soccer? I will definitely show you some exciting football, and we will have success.' Son went on to describe the impact his decision to leave Spurs took, recalling feeling 'very empty' after walking away from the club for which he scored 173 goals. 'I felt like I gave it all, but I felt like I needed a new challenge and I chose LAFC,' he added. 'I'm old, but I still have good physicality and I still have good quality.' Earlier, a teary Son had issued a heartfelt message to Tottenham supporters. 'How to find the right words for this? I don't know. I have been thinking for days. It's impossible. But here I go,' Son wrote. Son broke into tears when he announced his decision to leave Spurs 'It's time for me to say goodbye to Tottenham. My home for the past decade. When I arrived in 2015, I didn't speak English, I didn't know London, but you welcomed me with open arms, believed in me, and stood by me through every high and low. 'I was just a boy from Korea with big dreams who was supposed to have no chance. And now, 10 years later, North London is in my heart forever. 'I've made friends for life here, had the honour of becoming a godfather here, and had the privilege of captaining our special club here. I've poured my heart and soul into this club, which makes this the hardest decision ever. 'I thought if I was ever going to leave, it would have to be on my terms, on the best terms, when our mission had been accomplished together. 'With pride and honour.' Son will reunite with former Spurs team-mate Hugo Lloris at LAFC. The Los Angeles side topped the Western Conference last season, but lost to Seattle Sounders in the playoffs before LA Galaxy won the MLS Cup.

Western Bulldogs midfielder Oskar Baker carries a reminder of a family tragedy on his arm in every game he plays as he pays tribute to his late mother by wearing black tape on his arm. Baker, 27, has been on the fringes for his entire footy career following his debut with Melbourne in 2018. He is yet to chalk up 50 appearances, but is a fan favourite thanks to his energy and tenacity. Born in Queensland, he was cut from the Brisbane Lions academy in 2015 and privately feared his footy career was over before it started. Baker's life was then turned upside down in 2017 when his mother Trudie died of cancer - and the black tape is a nod to her each time he steps out onto the field. 'Mum in many ways was my biggest supporter,' he said in an interview on the Demons website after he was drafted. 'One of the last things I said to Mum before she passed was "I'll achieve my AFL dream and get onto an AFL list". 'She would be unbelievably proud.' Baker then moved to the Western Bulldogs in 2023, but opportunities have been scarce. Off contract at the end of the season, Baker knows big performances leading into September could result in finals footy - and potentially a new deal, be it under Luke Beveridge or elsewhere next year. Meanwhile, Beveridge has refused to confirm if the Bulldogs are interested in Carlton star Jack Silvagni. Collingwood and Essendon are also said to be interested in adding the defender to their roster for 2026 and beyond. 'I think with any free agent like Jack, every club's antenna is up,' Beveridge said ahead of his team's clash against the Demons on Sunday at the MCG. 'But I've always maintained the line of not talking about who we're chatting with behind the scenes, just purely out of respect for our playing group. 'Some of our lads (are) still uncontracted, they don't need to be thinking too much about who might take their spot. 'And also probably out of respect for someone like that he's got to spend time at his current club, if he is planning to move on.'
