Tanglewood Nature Center in Elmira kicks off public fundraiser for new treetop walkway
Tanglewood officials hope to raise another $1 million through the public phase of its fund drive for a project that's expected to be a major tourist draw for the Southern Tier at the facility located at 443 Coleman Ave. in Elmira.
The Tanglewood Treetop Walkway will give a panoramic look at the northern mixed hardwood forests, nature center officials said.
This region is part of the Allegheny Plateau and Appalachian foothills. Visible from the walkway will also be the rolling hills, large valleys, and surrounding topography resulting from the glacial movement nearly 20,000 years ago. Visitors can observe the forest from a bird's-eye view and gain a new perspective of the ecosystem, according to a Tanglewood news release.
"Tanglewood Nature Center is a pillar in our community for education, conservation, recreation, and local tourism," Congressman Nick Langworthy said last year when he announced the Appalachian Regional Commission grant for the treetop walkway.
The project aims to attract 24,300 new day visitors and 16,200 overnight visitors annually, generating an estimated $171,000 in new tax revenue within three years of its completion, Langworthy's office said.
Total project funding is about $3.5 million, and also includes $600,000 in state grants and $1.93 million in local funding.
Tanglewood officials hope to attract birders, artists, photographers, educators, students, and families, both from the local region and beyond. The goal is to boost tourism, spark creativity, support education, and generate revenue that will support the entire community.

The Tanglewood Nature Center currently welcomes over 35,000 visitors a year.

'It is a great honour': Enniskillen barber shop in running for national award
A barber shop with a twist is in the running for a national award. Headhunters Barber Shop and Railway Museum in Enniskillen is one of eight finalists in the UK-wide Love Your High Street Awards 2025, organised by the British Independent Retailers Association. The barber shop is the only finalist from Northern Ireland and was selected from amongst hundreds of independent businesses across the UK. Read more: Library demolition could see discovery of 'archaeological deposits' Founded in 1981 by brothers Nigel and Gordon Johnston, Headhunters Barber Shop & Railway Museum combines traditional barbering with a celebration of Irish railway history. In 2002, the brothers converted an adjoining ladies' salon into a railway museum to house their growing collection of artefacts. The museum, now one of the largest collections of small Irish railway memorabilia, covers the Great Northern Railway (Ireland), the Sligo, Leitrim & Northern Counties Railway, and the Clogher Valley Railway. Headhunters has welcomed several well-known visitors over the years, including Gloria Hunniford, Richard Wilson, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, Adrian Dunbar, and Rob Bell. The business now serves third-generation customers, reflecting its long-standing presence in the Enniskillen community. Operated entirely by volunteers, the museum is a registered charity and has previously received the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service. Admission is free, and the site is dog-friendly. It regularly hosts school groups, community events, and heritage talks. Read more: Classic satire and horror to hit the stage in Fermanagh this August Nigel Johnston, co-founder of Headhunters, said: "It is a great honour for us to be recognised as a small family barber shop and railway museum from our island town of Enniskillen and the only finalist from Northern Ireland. "The confirmation that we had firstly been nominated by our wonderful customers and then selected as a finalist came as a complete surprise and is very humbling for us and all the railway museum volunteers. "As the world's only barber shop and railway museum, we enjoy meeting visitors from far and wide, sharing our heritage on the high street. "We are overwhelmed by the response from the local community and further afield to the news that we have been selected as a finalist, and we are grateful for everyone's support, showing how much our high street is loved." The Love Your High Street Awards celebrate independent businesses that help keep high streets vibrant and are decided by public vote. Visitors and supporters can vote for Headhunters via the Headhunters Barber Shop & Railway Museum Facebook page or through the British Independent Retailers Association website. The public vote closes on August 27, 2025, and the winner will be announced on September 1.

Egypt sets opening of $1 bn Pyramids museum for Nov 1
Egypt said on Wednesday that its much-anticipated new $1-billion archaeological museum near the Pyramids of Giza will officially open on November 1 after several delays. Authorities hope that the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), which boasts the treasures of Tutankhamun among its collection of more than 100,000 ancient Egyptian artefacts, will attract visitors from around the world. Official say that at 50 hectares (124 acres), the museum will be the largest in the world dedicated to a single civilisation. Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly told a cabinet meeting that President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi had approved the new opening date. He said the opening would "an exceptional event" that would showcase Egypt's cultural heritage and attract visitors from around the world. It had been set for July 3 but was postponed when Israel attacked Iranian nuclear facilities on June 13 sparking a 12-day war that closed airspace across much of the Middle East. The project has faced a series of setbacks, including political unrest and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Authorities anticipate that the museum will draw five million visitors per year in a major boost to the tourism industry, which is a key foreign exchange earner for Egypt. maf/kir
