For first time in career, Rockets center Alperen Sengun draws All-NBA votes Rockets center Alperen Sengun was a first-time NBA All-Star in the 2024-25 season, and he also drew his first votes for the league's All-NBA teams. He was edged out for the final slot by James Harden.
In his fourth NBA season, Houston Rockets center Alperen Sengun made his first career All-Star appearance during the recently completed 2024-25 campaign.
For the first time, the 22-year-old rising star also drew votes for the league's 2024-25 Kia All-NBA teams. With 40 third-team votes and six second-team votes, Sengun finished with 58 total voting points. That made him the closest player to landing All-NBA honors beyond the 15 who earned the distinction.
For the 15th and final All-NBA slot, Sengun was edged out for the third team by former Rockets star James Harden. Now with the Los Angeles Clippers, the former Most Valuable Player (MVP) and future Hall of Famer had 56 third-team votes and four second-team votes, giving him 68 voting points.
With his No. 16 voting finish among all players, Sengun was the only Houston player who received All-NBA votes this season. Each of the three All-NBA teams consists of five players, regardless of position.
Sengun finished the 2024-25 regular season averaging 19.1 points (49.6% FG), 10.3 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game, making it the first time in his young career that he's averaged a double double. He put up those numbers in a winning context, as well, with the Rockets (52-30) finishing with the fourth-best record in the NBA and the second-best in the Western Conference.
And while Houston ultimately lost its first-round playoff series to the Golden State Warriors, Sengun enjoyed an encouraging postseason debut, as well. Across seven hard-fought games, the Turkish big man led the Rockets on a per-game basis in average points (20.9), rebounds (11.9), assists (5.3), and steals (1.9), and his defense exceeded virtually all expectations.
This fall, Sengun will enter the 2025-26 season in the first season of a five-year contract extension, which includes a significant pay increase that he earned through improved play in recent seasons. Observers around the league noticed, as well — including the panel of 100 regional, national, and international observers that vote on the NBA's annual awards (such as the All-NBA teams).
Of those 100 voters, nearly half (46) voted Sengun to an All-NBA team.

Lakers veteran on who will be the NBA's best breakout superstar

In recent months, there has been a lot of talk that the NBA is supposedly in bad shape and putting out a poor product. One reason people feel that way is that LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Stephen Curry are nearing the end of their careers. People feel there is no young superstar who is fully capable or qualified of being the next face of the league. However, others feel there are a few such players who will make sure the league and its product remain in good hands. Advertisement Los Angeles Lakers big man Markieff Morris just finished his 14th season in the league, and he won an NBA championship with James in 2020. On an episode of ESPN's "Get Up," he was asked which player has the best chance of being the next breakout superstar, and he went with Cade Cunningham of the Detroit Pistons. 'I'm going with Cunningham from Detroit,' said Morris. 'Cade Cunningham from Detroit. He had a great year. 'He led them guys to the playoffs. He took a step every single year. This is his third year. He's going to sign that big contract. I think he's the next guy. The next great point guard—scoring point guard in this league.' When Cunningham was the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, he was compared by some to James. While he doesn't have James' freakish athleticism, his size at 6-foot-6 and 220 pounds had people thinking big when it came to his potential. He struggled mightily with his shooting in his first two pro seasons. But last season, he showed improvement, and this season, he became, at worst, a borderline superstar. Advertisement He averaged 26.1 points, 9.1 assists and 6.1 rebounds a game while shooting 46.9% from the field and 35.6% from 3-point range. With some help from an improved supporting cast, he has made the Pistons into a rising playoff-caliber team that everyone respects now. At age 23, he should still have significant room for improvement moving forward. This article originally appeared on LeBron Wire: Lakers veteran on who will be the NBA's best breakout superstar

Coahoma softball downs Lexington for third consecutive state championship

AUSTIN — Once again, Coahoma is on top of the Texas softball world. The Bulldogettes won their third consecutive state championship with a 6-1 victory over Lexington in the Class 3A Division II title game Thursday at McCombs Field. Texas signee Hannah Wells was voted MVP after a 2-for-3 outing with a double and a home run. She also earned the win with eight strikeouts in a complete game. Advertisement Wells crushed the game's first pitch for a double, and two batters later Mia Clemmer opened the scoring with her own double. Lexington answered with a run on three hits in the home half of the first, but Coahoma scored the contest's final five runs. Wells allowed three hits the rest of the way and totaled two walks. Her towering shot in the third gave the Bulldogettes the lead for good. The future Longhorn became emotional seconds after the final out. "It's sad. I know that's terrible to say, but I am actually really sad," Wells said. "It's the best group of seniors in the game of softball, I think, for high school. And that shows with three state championships back to back. It's so surreal." Advertisement Wells played seven games at McCombs Field throughout her career, and that number will soon skyrocket. "I've played a lot of games here. It's my favorite place to be," Wells said. "I love the atmosphere. I just love Texas softball as a whole, so getting to come here is just a once in a lifetime opportunity. I'm so glad I get to do it." Clemmer, a Texas commit, capped the scoring with a solo homer in the sixth. She went 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Nevaeh Kerby, one of six seniors, tied Clemmer with a team-high two RBIs. Coahoma became the first softball team in UIL history to win three state championships in a row. Corpus Christi Calallen will look to match the feat Friday. Advertisement "It's a fitting end for these senior kids," Bulldogettes coach Alexander Orosco said, "that just bust their tails and do things the right way. It was fitting for them to get here and do it one more time." The Coahoma softball team celebrates after a win over Lexington in the Class 3A Division II state championship Thursday, May 29, 2025, at McCombs Field in Austin.
