In a conversation on the "DLLS Dallas Mavericks Podcast," Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd provided positive insight regarding Irving's recovery timeline from the devastating ACL tear that derailed both the star guard's and the team's 2024-25 season.
While the typical recovery period for an ACL tear ranges from 10 to 12 months, Kidd's comments suggest Irving could return to the court earlier than expected.
"We know he won't be back until January, February, March," Kidd said during his podcast appearance. "I wouldn't be surprised if he's back early."
Kidd was careful not to commit to a specific timeline, adding, "I didn't want to put a time limit on it, because I don't want to be held to, 'Well, you said January,' so we got to give me some leeway there."

Irving suffered the injury in early March, effectively ending what had already become a challenging season for the Mavericks. Previous reports indicated the organization was targeting a January return for Irving, which would mark approximately 10 months of recovery time.
Kidd's assessment of Irving's rehabilitation progress appears overwhelmingly positive.
"As you know, he documents everything, so just talking to him, his spirit, he's in the right frame of mind," Kidd noted, highlighting the eight-time All-Star's mental approach to recovery.
With Irving sidelined for at least the first two months of the 2025-26 campaign, the Mavericks face critical roster decisions this offseason. Kidd acknowledged the team is exploring options to temporarily fill the void at point guard.

"Being able to build the roster, maybe looking for a player that can fill that void until he can get back, also a player that can play with [Kyrie], also a player that might not play as much when [Kyrie] comes back," Kidd explained, outlining the complex calculus facing the front office.
Dante Exum and Spencer Dinwiddie handled playmaking duties in Irving's absence last season, but both enter free agency this summer, leaving the Mavericks with significant decisions to make.
The organization must also balance urgency with prudence regarding Irving's return timeline. At 34 years old by next March, rushing back from such a significant injury carries substantial risk, regardless of Irving's determination to return ahead of schedule.

As the offseason unfolds, the organization's approach to temporarily replacing Irving while simultaneously building around the future Flagg-Irving pairing will be closely watched by Mavericks faithful eager for a return to contention.

MLB, ESPN reportedly reach agreement for network to obtain rights to sell out-of-market games, ability to offer MLB.TV

ESPN and MLB are reportedly close to an agreement that would allow the network to carry and the rights to all out-of-market baseball games — and select in-market baseball games — according to Andrew Marchand of The Athletic. The reported deal, which has not been signed yet, would give ESPN the ability to offer to fans as part of the network's newly-launched direct-to-consumer streaming service. ESPN officially announced that service Thursday. It's unclear exactly if — or how — the agreement will change how fans currently access per Marchand. But the network could require fans to have an ESPN direct-to-consumer subscription to get access to From The Athletic: It is not fully clear yet if out-of-market subscribers who pay for the package through cable or other linear subscription would still be able to receive that way. For digital consumers, fans are likely to need an ESPN direct-to-consumer subscription to go along with The overall new pricing for is not yet decided. In addition to that, ESPN would also obtain the rights to every out-of-network MLB game. That's essentially what already provides to customers, as the service offers out-of-network games to fans. But it would also presumably allow ESPN to sell rights for certain out-of-network games to other networks or subscription services. Events such as the Home Run Derby or "Sunday Night Baseball" could be sold to other networks by ESPN, which has previously held broadcast rights for those events. The network could also presumably sell any random out-of-market game to, as an example, Apple TV+. It's unclear if that's what the network has in mind if the deal goes through. ESPN is still expected to broadcast roughly 30 regular-season games per year, according to Marchand. Those games would presumably be available on the network, and not exclusive to its direct-to-consumer offering. As part of the deal, ESPN will also control in-network games for five MLB teams: the Cleveland Guardians, San Diego Padres, Minnesota Twins, Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies. Local fans who want to watch those teams would likely have to go through ESPN's direct-to-consumer service. In addition to owning a subscription to that service — which costs $29.99 per month — the network could charge in-network consumers an additional fee to watch their favorite team's games. The reported agreement comes after a months-long feud between MLB commissioner Rob Manfred and ESPN. In February, ESPN decided to opt out of its partnership with the league following the 2025 MLB season. Manfred ripped the network a month later, saying he felt the league was "being treated disrespectfully" by ESPN. It appears those issues are now water under the bridge if Thursday's reported agreement comes to pass. Should the agreement go through, it would reportedly last for three years, per Marchand. MLB reportedly wants all of its broadcast rights to expire in 2029, allowing it to make a massive payday by auctioning off those rights to the highest bidder or bidders.

Emma Raducanu and Jack Draper face qualifiers in US Open first round

Emma Raducanu and Jack Draper will both face qualifiers in the opening round of the US Open. The pair are the leading British hopes for success in New York, with Draper bidding to follow up last year's breakthrough run to the semi-finals. Seeded fifth, the draw initially appears to have been kind to the 23-year-old, although he could face defending champion Jannik Sinner a round earlier than last year in the last eight. Draper will hope to find form quickly on his favoured hard courts after being forced to sit out the recent Masters 1000 events in Canada and Cincinnati because of an arm injury. He has not played a competitive singles match since a disappointing loss to Marin Cilic in the second round of Wimbledon but did play three contests in the revamped mixed doubles tournament here alongside American Jessica Pegula, with the pair beating Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz in their opening match. Raducanu has continued her strong season over the last couple of months, elevating her ranking to 35 in the world but just missing out on a seeding by one spot. She is still looking for her first victory at Flushing Meadows since claiming the title in 2021 as a qualifier and, while she is likely to be strongly favoured in the opening round, things will get tougher from there. In the second round, the 22-year-old could face 24th seed Veronika Kudermetova, while ninth seed Elena Rybakina is a potential third-round opponent. Raducanu will fancy her chances against anyone in the field, though, having taken world number one Aryna Sabalenka all the way to a deciding tie-break in Cincinnati last week in her first tournament under new coach Francisco Roig. The other British women have been handed tough draws, with Katie Boulter, who has struggled since Wimbledon, taking on 27th seed Marta Kostyuk and Sonay Kartal meeting 11th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia. In the men's draw, Wimbledon quarter-finalist Cameron Norrie faces American Sebastian Korda while Jacob Fearnley will make his US Open debut against Roberto Bautista Agut, with the winner likely to meet third seed Alexander Zverev. Top seed Sinner, who was on court practising on Thursday three days after retiring in tears with illness in Monday's final in Cincinnati against Alcaraz, is in the opposite half of the draw to both Novak Djokovic and the Spaniard, who faces a tricky opener against giant American Reilly Opelka. Defending women's champion Sabalenka plays Spain's Rebeka Masarova in round one while second seed Iga Swiatek and third seed Coco Gauff are both in the bottom half. Forty-five-year-old Venus Williams, who returns to the tournament as a wild card 28 years after making her debut, faces a tough opener against 11th seed Karolina Muchova. Play in the main draws begins on Sunday.

Volunteers suspend Ruby Whitehorn indefinitely nearly 2 weeks after arrest

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Volunteers have suspended fourth-year guard Ruby Whitehorn indefinitely following her recent arrest on felony charges of domestic assault and aggravated burglary. Last week, Whitehorn's attorney, Gregory P. Isaacs, said Whitehorn will plead not guilty at her preliminary hearing on Sept. 5. 'She is suspended indefinitely and is not participating in team activities," an athletic department spokesman said in an email to The Associated Press on Thursday. The 6-foot player from Detroit was arrested Aug. 8 after the Knox County Sherriff's Office responded to a call around 4:15 p.m. According to reports, police said Whitehorn got into an altercation outside a woman's residence and kicked in a front door and bedroom door. Whitehorn reportedly told officers she was getting her property back after the woman took her phone and passport and then locked the door. 'Our firm's investigation has also revealed that the factual allegations contained in the warrants are not accurate and are contradicted by eyewitness accounts," Isaacs said in last week's statement. "Ruby Whitehorn looks forward to having this matter resolved in the very near future.' Whitehorn started 28 of 34 games last season for the Lady Vols and ranked fourth in scoring with 11.6 points a game. She also had four rebounds per game. She began her career at Clemson where she started 62 of the 66 games. She helped Tennessee go 24-10 in coach Kim Caldwell's debut season. The Lady Vols lost to Texas in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here. AP women's college basketball: and
