
Hoax call led to helicopter circling Pontymister, police confirm
At 12:01pm on Friday 11 July, the National Police Air Service (NPAS) confirmed that its St Athan-based helicopter had been deployed to assist Gwent Police in the Newport area.
Gwent Police have since confirmed that the incident was the result of a hoax call, and enquiries into the matter are ongoing.
Eyewitnesses described the helicopter making several low passes, with one local saying, 'It's been up there a while, must be something serious.'

The details of the Shotts nick assault emerged at Hamilton Sheriff Court yesterday where Liam Mathewson, 24, admitted leaving victim Craig bruised and bloodied. Sheriff Louise Gallacher handed him a 14-month term to run alongside his current sentence for attempted murder. Depute fiscal Rebecca Clark told the court: 'He sustained a number of lacerations which were treated with steri-strips and didn't require to go to hospital.' Eddie Robertson, defending, said of Mathewson: 'In blunt terms this was a case where quite evidently there was no love lost between the two individuals and was a case of striking before one was struck themselves.' Sheriff Gallacher added: 'Given your significant record for violence and your current status there is no appropriate way of dealing with you other than a custodial sentence.' The incident happened in Maesdu Road in Llandudno on Wednesday, August 13, and is believed to have been triggered by a "suspected medical episode". Emergency services were called to the scene with the road closed while they responded. A spokesman for North Wales Police said on Friday: "Shortly before 5.30pm on Wednesday, August 13, we received a report of a single-vehicle road traffic collision on Maesdu Road in Llandudno, which closed the road. "It was reported a car had collided with a bus stop. "Officers attended, alongside colleagues from the Welsh Ambulance Service University NHS Trust, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, and the air ambulance. The crash happened on Maesdu Road in Llandudno on Wednesday, with the road shut while emergency services worked at the scene. A North Wales Police spokesperson today (Friday) said: "Shortly before 5.30pm on Wednesday 13 August, we received a report of a single vehicle road traffic collision on Maesdu Road in Llandudno, which closed the road. It was reported a car had collided with a bus stop. "Officers attended, alongside colleagues from the Welsh Ambulance Service University NHS Trust, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service and the Air male driver of the vehicle sadly died at the scene following a suspected medical incident." A Wales Air Ambulance spokesperson yesterday (Thursday) said: "I can confirm the Wales Air Ambulance attended an incident in that region yesterday (13/08/25). "Our team from Caernarfon attended via road and our Welshpool-based crew flew in to assist. They were allocated at 17:32 and arrived at the scene at 17:55. Our involvement concluded at 19:00."
