Michael Schumacher's 'crown jewel' F1 car sells for £13,400,000

A Formula 1 car driven by Michael Schumacher in the 2001 Monaco championships has sold for over £13 million.
Schumacher's 'crown jewel' can reach speeds of up to 233 mph and was sold in Monaco for £13,400,000 this weekend.
Because of its history of winning, the motor has been hailed as the 'crown jewel' among all of Schumacher's F1 cars.
The F2001, chassis 211, became the most expensive car driven by the German legend, 56, to be sold at auction.
Previously, the most paid for a car driven by Schumacher was £9,750,000 for his F2003 in 2002.
It was also the fourth most expensive F1 car ever sold – the world record was set in February when a Mercedes 'streamliner' raced by Sir Stirling Moss and Juan Manuel Fangio went for £42.75m.
It was previously sold in 2017 for £5.8 million, which was a record at the time for a modern-era Formula 1 car, as reported by Luxury Auto News.
The car allowed Ferrari to secure back-to-back title doubles for the first time in the team's Formula 1 history, marking it as one of the most important of all F1 cars.
It was also the final Ferrari F1 car to win Monaco in a Championship-winning year.
The car was auctioned by RM Sotheby's on May 24 in Monte Carlo to coincide with the Monaco Grand Prix.
A spokesperson for the auctioneers said: 'The only Ferrari chassis raced by Michael Schumacher which won the most prestigious Monaco Grand Prix.
'And also clinched the Formula 1 World Championship in the same season, making this a crown jewel among all Schumacher F1 cars.'
Earlier this year, Schumacher signed a crash helmet to be auctioned off for charity with the help of his wife.
The F1 legend, who suffered a devastating head injury in a ski accident 12 years ago, wrote his initials, MS, with the guiding hand of Corinna. More Trending
Schumacher's family have been extremely secretive about his condition, being fiercely protective of his privacy.
The German driver, who still holds several F1 records 13 years after his retirement, sustained a severe brain injury in a skiing accident while visiting the French Alps in December 2013.
He was taken to a hospital in Grenoble and placed in a medically induced coma. After being withdrawn from the coma, he returned home in September 2014 to continue recovering.
A neurosurgery expert said previously that Schumacher – known affectionately as Schumi – may have had a 'private hospital built around him' at home on the shores of Lake Geneva in Switzerland.

Russell Martin appointed Rangers manager on 3 year contract as ex Southampton boss leads 49ers revolution

Martin is the man entrusted by the new Ibrox hierarchy to get Gers challenging again Russell Martin has been appointed as the new manager of Rangers on a three-year deal. Record Sport exclusively broke the news on Wednesday night that Martin will be officially paraded in the next 48 hours after convincing new chairman Andrew Cavenagh that he was the best man for the job. ‌ The Englishman has been without a club since getting the sack at Southampton last December, just six months after leading the club back to the Premier League through the Championship play-offs. ‌ It's believed the ex-Gers and Scotland defender had been in discussions with Leicester City but has knocked back the chance to replace Ruud van Nistlerooy by finalising a return to Govan instead. The appointment brings the near four-month-long search for a new manager in Govan to an end. The Light Blues had been without a permanent boss since sacking Philippe Clement at the end of February, with former club captain Barry Ferguson taking on the reins on an interim basis for the remainder of the campaign. But with 49ers Enterprises completing their takeover of Rangers last Friday, the hunt to get a new man in the dugout was ramped up. Sweeping changes in the Ibrox hierarchy have also seen Kevin Thelwell appointed as the club's new sporting director, with fellow Everton colleague Dan Purdy also joining Gers as technical director. ‌ Martin has already had a brief taste of what being at Ibrox is all about, having spent the second half of the 2017/18 season on loan with Gers during his playing career. The 39-year-old will be keen to get down to business straight away, with Rangers entering the second qualifying round of the Champions League on July 22/23. It's expected he'll be joined by long term assistant Matty Gill, while former Gers full-back Maurice Ross has also been earmarked for a key role in the coaching staff ‌ Martin's arrival comes following a major plot twist in talks with rival target Davide Ancelotti, who suddenly appeared to cool on the prospect of making the move from Madrid to Glasgow's south side. The son of managerial great Carlo appeared to be the frontrunner after holding a series of discussions with Thelwell and Gretar Steinsson, football adviser to the San Francisco 49ers. But Ancelotti's camp began to stall on a move to Ibrox at the start of this week, with the young coach being lined up by Como as a replacement for Cesc Fabregas - who could succeed Al-Hilal-bound Simone Inzaghi at Inter Milan. Mercedes-AMG One Catches Fire Again, Raises Safety Questions

$3M Mercedes-AMG One Catches Fire in Viral Video Priced at close to $3 million and limited to a planned 275 units, the Mercedes-AMG One hybrid hypercar is as exclusive as it gets, which is why the mere thought of one being damaged or lost is traumatic. Unfortunately, a new video has surfaced online of an AMG One burning to the ground. The clip was shared by user Chrimbu on social media, but no details were provided as to exactly where or how the blaze started. The fire does not appear to have been caused by an accident, though, which suggests the car unexpectedly caught alight. Complex Hybrid Powertrain To Blame? The extensively electrified powertrain of the AMG One isn't going to reduce the intensity of a fire. Besides the 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 engine, the One also features four electric motors and an 8.4-kWh lithium-ion battery. When exposed to extreme temperatures, lithium-ion batteries can result in thermal runaway. According to UL Research Institutes, this process causes the lithium-ion cell to enter a self-heating state that is difficult to stop. Furthermore, it makes it more challenging to extinguish such a fire. There's no way of knowing if the AMG One's powertrain caused the fire we see here, but it's likely that the battery and associated components further fueled the flames. When it's not lighting up the sky, the AMG One's performance is pretty hot, with the hypercar capable of a 0-62 mph sprint time of 2.9 seconds. It will reach around 218 mph, too. Not The First AMG One To Catch Alight Almost exactly two years ago, The Sun reported on another AMG One that was burned to a crisp. Allegedly, this one was being towed in Staffordshire, England, when it burst into flames. The fact that the car was switched off and being towed at the time makes this an especially bizarre event. 'We are aware of this incident involving a car that was being transported in a closed trailer as part of its assembly process,' said a spokesperson for Mercedes at the time. As one of AMG's most ambitious projects ever, Mercedes faced a number of hurdles in developing the hypercar. Ola Kallenius, Mercedes-Benz CEO, once even joked that the board must surely have been 'drunk' when it was decided to forge ahead with the car. Adapting the F1 powertrain for use on the street was one of the biggest challenges, and considering how long it took to get everything right, it's all the more disheartening that at least two Ones have been destroyed. Source: Mercedes-AMG Is The AMG One A Fire Risk? While hybrid and EV naysayers may be quick to point at the elevated fire risks of electrified cars, it's impossible to know for sure if this is an inherent flaw in the AMG hypercar. Certainly, two burned cars will raise eyebrows – especially since this is one of the most expensive cars in the world – but these could be entirely isolated incidents that have nothing to do with each other. Presently, no known recalls have been issued for the AMG One, nor have any known injuries occurred as a result of these fires. All we're left with, then, are two enormous insurance claims and a hypercar world deprived of two spectacular track toys.

Ultra-Rare BMW 507 For Sale With Eye-Popping Pricetag

A rare example of one of BMW's early sports cars is up for sale, but it's unlikely we'll be able to afford it. A rare piece of German motoring You can never go wrong with a vintage BMW. The German automaker's classic examples have a special way of combining slim bodylines and a svelte silhouette with sheer, menacing performance under the hood. This 1959 BMW 5078 Series II on Bring a Trailer is a perfect example of what I mean. 1959 BMW 507 Series II w/Hardtop — Source: Bring a Trailer/Hyman Ltd When US importer Max Hoffman suggested that BMW design as mid-level sports car for the North American market, BMW replied with the 507. Featuring hand-built aluminum bodywork styled by Albrecht von Goertz, the 507 debuted in 1955 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City before entering production in late 1956. In 1957, the Series II debuted with a smaller fuel tank relocated from behind the seats to inside the trunk to prevent fumes from entering the cabin. This particular example, Chassis 70185, is one of only 252 built during the model's three years of production and was completed on October 6, 1958 as a Feather White car before being delivered new on October 31, 1958, to Autohaus H. Bäte KG in Hannover, Germany. The car reportedly underwent a refurbishment around 2012 that included a repaint in its current shade of Coral Red and a refinishing of its hardtop in an ivory color. The 507 was then acquired in 2022 by German specialists Arthur Bechtel Classic Motors, who re-trimmed the interior in tan leather. 1959 BMW 507 Series II w/Hardtop What sets this particular BMW 507 apart from others is its ivory hardtop that can be installed when the beige convertible top is not in use. Hardtops were optional equipment at the time and were hand-built to fit each car's hand-built bodywork, making them particularly rare and special accessories to own. This tiny thing has a V8 hiding inside Under the hood is a 3,168cc V8 with an aluminum block and cylinder heads as well as twin Zenith carburetors mated to a four-speed manual transmission. This 507 sits on 16' Rudge wheels wrapped in 6.00-16 Michelin Pilote X tires with Dunlop front disc and rear drum brakes behind them. The cabin still wears its tan leather and sports a contrasting ivory steering wheel and shift knob alongside a Becker Mexico radio. The odometer shows around 33,000 kilometers (~21,000 miles), with 25 of those being added by the current owner. 1959 BMW 507 Series II w/Hardtop — Source: Bring a Trailer/Hyman Ltd Final thoughts The auction ends in 9 days with a current bid of $1,000,000, so it's unlikely that you and I will be able to afford such a beauty. Considering that it was purchased from a collection by its current owner in January 2025 and they only added 25 miles since, this poor thing suffers from a severe lack of being driven. This isn't an uncommon occurence with cars of this rarity and value, but it's also not an excuse. I won't go on a tangent about why driving your cars is the right thing to do, but I sure hope that the new owner feels the same way.
