Texas to Turf Moor - how JJ Watt got 'invested' in Burnley
Walking to the match with fans, lifting weights in the gym with the players, and soaking up the wisdom of the movers and shakers in the boardroom. It's fair to say JJ Watt is living the full experience since buying into Burnley. The legendary NFL defensive end became the latest in a string of American personalities, from Wall Street to Hollywood, to take a stake in British football clubs when he and his wife, ex-United States international player Kealia, became minority investors in the Clarets in May 2023.Since then he has witnessed first-hand the angst of relegation from the Premier League and this season's resurgence under Scott Parker, with the Turf Moor club in contention for automatic promotion back to the top flight. In a wide-ranging interview with Radio 5 Live, the 35-year-old explains why he invested - in both the emotional and financial sense of the word - in the Lancashire club, and how he is bringing his experience as an elite sportsman to bear in the Championship title race. The former Houston Texans star was named Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year in 2017 as much for his efforts in helping his adopted city recover from the devastation of Hurricane Harvey and other philanthropic work, as for his achievements on the field of play. Now he is busy trying to translate that knowhow, community ethic and desire to succeed to a proud old club in a small Lancashire former mill town.
Keeping the 'juices flowing'
From Stan Kroenke to the Glazers, Todd Boehly to Shahid Khan, and Ryan Reynolds to Tom Brady, North American entrepreneurs and celebrities have been buying varying stakes in British football for some time now.But what tempted Watt to sink some of the fortune he made from a stellar gridiron career into Burnley?"There's plenty of people with advice on what you're supposed to do and how you're supposed to do it, but I knew I would want to do something, especially towards the end of my career, to keep the competitive juices flowing," he said."So team ownership came into play there. I became really interested in English football back in 2011, and it started to become really appealing to me."I started poking around different teams, having conversations, and the path eventually led me here to Burnley."'All clubs in top four tiers could be US-owned'Burnley are one of a growing number of EFL and Premier League clubs with Stateside owners, having been taken over by businessman Alan Pace in 2020."You look at an American football [NFL] club - right now they're all valued at billions and billions of dollars," Watt added."You take my amount of money and put it into that and congratulations, you have one seat at a game, not at the board table, not at anything."You come over here and the valuations are different and there's more opportunity."I saw an opportunity to get involved at a level I wanted to be involved at, be in the board meetings, learn and grow, while also injecting something, bringing something to the club in terms of global notoriety, eyeballs to the game etc."
Walking with the fans and weights with the players
Not that Watt has restricted himself to boardroom-level involvement - he has also revelled in mixing with the fans... and showing the players who is boss in the gym."Another thing that brings you to English football is the history, tradition, passion and supporters," he said."It's why I'm so drawn to it and why I walked from the hotel to the match [Burnley v Luton Town] the other day, because I wanted to be with the people."When I watch these games and go to these matches with these supporters... I told our players last year they truly don't understand how they affect these people on a day-to-day basis."Watt also hopes his vast experience of performing at the top level of his sport can help a Burnley team which is now at the sharp end of a promising campaign."One thing I can definitively speak on more knowledgeably than [the board] is what it's like to be in a locker room, what it's like to be in a competition, what it's like to be at this part of the season, fighting for things," he added."Yesterday I was at the training ground most of the day, having breakfast with the players, in the locker room with the players, in the weight room with the players, just talking to them."
As a 6ft 5in (1.96m) beast of a player, Watt is a formidable sight in the gym and, when asked about lifting weights with the Clarets players, he laughed: "Sometimes I just like to let them know."Credibility comes quickly when you have 400 pounds on the bar."I can sit down and have a conversation with a player, whether he's going through a rough stretch and I can talk to them about that."These are 22 or 23-year-old kids going through all this for the first time. I'm fortunate enough to have been through this before, so I can talk to them about how you mentally handle that."One chat with a player made headlines in America after Watt told goalkeeper James Trafford he would come out of retirement and play for the England Under-21 international's NFL favourites Cincinnati Bengals, if Trafford managed to extend his record-breaking run of 12 Championship clean sheets to the end of the season. That promise came to nothing as Burnley conceded against Cardiff City earlier this month, but Watt said it had him worried for a while."It started to get picked up really big in America once he hit 12, and they put up a graphic that showed Manchester United had hit 14," Watt said."It was on every single show, so my wife came in and said, 'You're not serious about this are you?' and I said, 'If he does 24 matches in a row, that will truly be one of the greatest performances in the history of sport and I would be ridiculous not to honour my side of it.'"So I had been training slightly differently for about three weeks leading up to the goal, and I did take a day off after they [Cardiff] scored that goal."
Looking to the future
Watt is under no illusions that Burnley, even if they win promotion, will be in a scrap for survival next season, but that, and the dream of upsetting the odds as Leicester City did by winning the Premier League in 2016, simply fuels the fire. The reward of promotion and jeopardy of relegation, a mostly foreign concept in American sport, was part of the lure for Watt becoming involved with Burnley."When you know there is nothing bad that can happen if you finish last, it kind of dilutes the product," he said."When there is a literal consequence to winning and losing it makes a sport as close to the truest and most pure form that you can have."I'll never forget the stat on our first day [back] in the Premier League, when we played Manchester City and their three defenders cost more than the entire wage bill in the history of our club, since 1882. That doesn't happen in the NFL."Am I naive enough to think we can win the Premier League next year if we go up? No, I understand how all this works."Do we all dream of a Leicester-style run one day? Absolutely, but it's more in the little things, trying to make your club better on a day-by-day basis."

‘So far no official proposal has been sent' – Inside Rangers link-up with SPFL Championship side as hold-up revealed

It is after the Scottish FA passed more flexible rules for under-21 Scottish players to move between clubs under the new 'cooperation system'. But that was before Rangers technical director Nils Koppen left Ibrox and the club's takeover. And Raith director Ruaridh Kilgour admits Raith are waiting to find out if Rangers will get back in touch. He said: 'It's not kind of one of [technical director] John Potter's priorities right now. 'There's a lot of other things going on, like just basically building a squad through the transfer window. 'But completely out of the blue, Rangers contacted John and asked him to go for a meeting at Murray Park with Nils Koppen, the then technical director. 'They said that they'd pinpointed Raith Rovers as someone they would like to have a partnership with to develop their young players. 'They then came to Stark's Park the week after to have a look around and see what the facilities are like, which again they were really impressed with. 'The way it was left was that we asked them to come up with a proposal of what this could look like. 'They saw this as something where they could potentially send us other players. Rangers fans react to news Russell Martin is their new manager "So players who are maybe a bit older than 21 and also players who weren't Scottish. 'It was left with Rangers to draw up a proposal. "As an overall update, no official proposal has been sent, Rangers have gone through a takeover and Nils is no longer there and nothing has happened in the last three or four weeks.' And Kilgour insists Raith will only enter into a partnership if it is right for them and their fans. He added: "The way we will then approach this is decided on three factors. 'Number one will be a football factor where Barry [Robson] and John would make a decision based purely on the playing side of it. 'We as a board would make a financial decision on it about how this can help us with our budget, in terms of what the cost would be to bring in these players – or maybe they would be free, who knows. 'And then finally – and most importantly – there'd be a kind of brand perspective where we would put it to supporters. 'Because this is one of those decisions where we feel supporters should be consulted. And the reason for that is we know that some supporters will not like the potential to be partnered with other clubs." Atletico keen on Robertson - would move appeal?
Atletico Madrid are interested in signing Liverpool defender Andy Robertson as the Anfield club edge towards a deal to bring in Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez as their first-choice said last week he had not given his future much thought, with his focus on a enjoying a well-earned holiday after another long and successful season in which he won the Premier League for the second with the transfer window opening in a few days, the Anfield mainstay and Scotland captain's club future is unclear for the first time in eight would likely cost between £45m-£50m and is expected to be Arne Slot's preferred choice at Liverpool are keen to retain Robertson and allow current back-up left-back Kostas Tsimikas leave, but acknowlege that the 31-year-old may be minded to move on in search of regular football. Why would Robertson stay at Liverpool? Robertson has had a very successful stint on Merseyside since joining from Hull City in 2017, and has a year left on his has won everything, adding a second league title last season as Arne Slot's side comfortably claimed the Premier League. Robertson was still a big part of that, starting 33 of 38 games. And though some fans might be ready to move on, at 31 the defender is willing to fight for his place."I'm not getting any younger - I can't change my age - but I still believe I've got a lot to give," Robertson told BBC Sport Scotland whilst on international duty last week. "I still believe I have a hell of a lot to give for however many years I can keep going. "My body feels good at the minute. I can't tell you how I'll feel at 33 or 34, but I can tell you, at 31, I feel excellent."With his family settled in the city and his place as a club legend likely assured, moving away would be a big Robertson will likely have taken note of the acrimony around Trent Alexander-Arnold's recent exit for Real situations are not directly comparable given Alexander-Arnold is a local boy and academy product, who at 26 potentially has his peak years in front of whether Robertson is first-choice or not at Liverpool next season, the club will have a big pull, especially given they would arguably want him to stay and compete with Kerkez for a starting berth across a long season on several front. Why might a move abroad appeal? If Kerkez does join and bump Robertson down the pecking order, a switch to another Premier League club can not be ruled out with Atletico are prioritising him as their left-back target this summer, a move outside of the UK for the first time is on the was asked about the benefits of playing abroad while on international duty last week, in reference to Scotland team-mates Billy Gilmour and Scott McTominay, who won Serie A in their first season at Napoli."When these players play abroad they see a different way of playing and lifestyle," he said. "That can only help. "Young lads coming through might now be thinking I want to go and try that. That's credit to those lads stepping out of their comfort zone."It will not have escaped Robertson's notice just how much of a hero McTominay now is in Naples after leading them to the Scudetto, while being named the league's best move guarantees success, but with Serie A and La Liga often described as a slightly slower pace week-to-week than the Premier League, a move abroad at 31 might give Robertson more years at the top. Would Atletico & Simeone be a good fit? With Cesar Azpilicueta and fellow left-back Reinildo Mandava out of contract, Diego Simeone has set his eyes on Argentine has become renowned for intense, aggressive play over his 14 years at the club, winning two La Liga titles and reaching two Champions League a few attempts to reinvent his style, defensive solidity is still a priority and Atletico had the second-best defensive record in La Liga last while Robertson was renowned for his assists in Jurgen Klopp's successful spell, he can do both sides of the leadership skills and personality on the pitch is also something Simeone would enjoy, and working with the Argentinian may itself be a draw for Robertson. Do fans think Robertson should stay? BBC Sport asked fans to get in touch with their views on Robertson's future recently, and here are some of the Robbo has been a fantastic player but his recent mistakes have led to goals conceded and this would be a problem in what I expect to be a tougher Robbo has been a great player for Liverpool, a real legend. Last season it was mistake after mistake at times and I think it's down to his game being all about high intensity and his age creeping up on him. His minutes need to be managed now, but he definitely still has a place in the Looks like Robertson's time as the number one left-back could be coming to an end. Robertson might have to get used to being the back-up for Robbo is our left-back. Whoever comes in has to knock him out of the position and not the other way round. He's got nothing to prove. Always need a Scot in the Move him on given his contract status. Tsimikas is an able an opinion? Have your say here
