TRAI seeks views on assignment of microwave spectrum in lower 6GHz, E&V-bands
NEW DELHI: The
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India
(
TRAI
) on Wednesday floated a consultation paper to seek stakeholders' views on the assignment of the microwave spectrum in the lower 6GHz band, 7GHz, 15GHz, 18GHz, 21GHz bands, and E & V bands.
In August 2022, the Department of Telecommunications had requested the telecom regulator to provide recommendations for the assignment of spectrum in
E&V bands
and microwave access (MWA) and microwave backbone (MWB) spectrum in frequency bands of 6GHz/7GHz/13GHz/15GHz/18GHz/21GHz.
In this regard, TRAI released a consultation paper on the assignment of spectrum in E&V Bands, and Microwave Access (MWA) and Microwave Backbone (MWB) for stakeholders' inputs on the subject.
However, in the meantime, the Central government enacted the Telecommunication Act, 2023, in December 2023. Subsequently, the telecom watchdog told DoT that a review may be needed on the abovementioned topic.
In response, the DoT, through a fresh reference letter in September 2024, while agreeing to the TRAI's observation that backhaul spectrum is a part of the First Schedule of the Telecommunications Act, 2023 for which the assignment method would be administrative, requested TRAI to provide recommendations under Section 11(1)(a) of the TRAI Act, 1997 on aspects such as demand assessment and scope of service or usage for V-band (57-66GHz) and E-band (81-86GHz), and the mode of assignment of spectrum and associated tersm and conditions.
The DoT had also asked TRAI to provide its suggestions on
spectrum charges
and related terms & conditions, such as spectrum cap, carrier aggregation, etc., for the assignment of spectrum in lower 6GHz)/7GHz/13GHz/15GHz/18GHz/21GHz bands for backhaul purposes of commercial telecom services, and if there is any need to review the use of the 7GHz and 15GHz bands in view of consideration of these bands for Access using International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) after World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC) - 2027.
To this extent, stakeholders can submit their views on the consultation paper by June 25, and counter-comments by July 9.

Starlink set to get licence to start satcom services
NEW DELHI: 's Starlink is all set to get a go-ahead to start satellite services in India, with the govt clearing its application for a Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) licence, weeks after issuing a letter of intent (LoI) to the company. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Starlink was waiting for the licence for the past three-four years and will finally get a go-ahead after it agreed to new conditions laid out by the department of telecom (DoT) and after it paid the fees mandated under the law. "Starlink's officials are expected in the national capital over the coming days to sign the papers for the GMPCS licence. The company is in sync with the new licence conditions and various guidelines that are required to begin services in the country," sources aware of the development told TOI. The issuance of the licence will clear one of the biggest hurdles for the company, especially as this also involves receiving approvals on security aspects by the ministry of home affairs. The govt carried out a detailed vetting of Musk's satellite company and also stipulated stiff security requirements, including the need to establish methods of interception as well as having a command and control centre in the country. Sources said that after GMPCS licence, Starlink will need approval from IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre), which will issue authorisation for its satellites to operate on Indian territory. "The application at IN-SPACe is also at its final leg and should get approval at the inter-ministerial standing committee, which is expected to happen very soon," another source said. DoT issued a Letter of Intent (LoI) to Starlink on May 7, which paved the way for the issuance of the GMPCS licence. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Govt has also kickstarted the process of finalising rules to allot spectrum to the satcom companies, which, apart from Starlink, also includes the satcom joint ventures and investments of Reliance Jio and Airtel. On May 9, regulator Trai submitted recommendations to DoT on allotment of spectrum and charges that companies need to pay for using airwaves.

The accused have been identified as Aman Sharma (25), Deepak Singh (26), Rahul Das (30), Avinash Singh (21), Sudhir Kumar Mahato (28), and Pratik Kumar Singh (27). Vodafone Idea share price falls 2% after telco resumes relief talks with govt on AGR dues
Vodafone Idea share price fell over 2 per cent in Tuesday's trading session after the telecom company said that it is actively working with the central government to obtain relief for its longstanding Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) liabilities. However, at 9:20 am, the Vodafone Idea stock recovered losses by climbing intraday high to ₹ 7.02 apiece on June 3. The company, which is facing challenges, is in talks with banks to obtain debt financing for its long-term growth, said CEO Akshaya Moondra. She added that banks will seek clear information about the telco's outstanding payments to the government before approving any loans. However, Moondra noted that this requirement is not hindering the progress of the discussions. Vodafone Idea CEO Akshaya Moondra mentioned that the company is still in talks with the central government to reach a practical resolution on the AGR issue. He emphasized that the government should have full freedom to provide relief, especially since this is a policy matter beyond the scope of judicial intervention. Moondra also pointed out the financial pressures the company faces, highlighting India's low Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) and the unsustainable pricing of data services as key obstacles. He called for a pricing model where heavy data users bear a proportionally higher cost, stressing that the telecom sector's current returns fall short of the cost of capital. This update comes after the Supreme Court recently rejected the company's request for relief, dealing a major setback to the heavily indebted telecom operator. The telecom company is struggling with AGR liabilities close to ₹ 30,000 crore and a declining market share. TRAI data shows that Vodafone Idea's subscriber count dropped by 6.47 lakh in April, bringing the total to 20.47 crore. Ahead of the Supreme Court's decision, the telecom company had sent an urgent appeal to the telecom department, cautioning that without timely government support, it might not sustain operations beyond FY26. Although the company reduced its net loss to ₹ 7,166.1 crore in Q4 FY25, Vodafone Idea continues to depend heavily on external aid. Recently, its board approved a plan to raise up to ₹ 20,000 crore, pending shareholder and regulatory clearances. According to Riyank Arora, Technical Analyst at Mehta Equities Ltd, Vodafone Idea is showing signs of stability above its support at ₹ 6.80. As long as the stock holds this level, a short-term upward move toward the target of ₹ 7.55 looks possible. 'A breakout above ₹ 7.00 with volume can add momentum to the move. However, if it breaks below ₹ 6.80, weakness could set in, and the stock may drift lower. Traders can consider buying with a stop-loss at ₹ 6.80, aiming for ₹ 7.55 in the near term. The trend remains cautiously positive above support,' Arora said. Disclaimer: This story is for educational purposes only.
