Avatar Fire And Ash: First Look Of Villain ‘Varang' Unveiled, Indian Release Date Announced
Games Of Thrones alum Oona Chaplin will play the role of the antagonist 'Varang' in James Cameron's highly anticipated film 'Avatar: Fire And Ash'.
James Cameron's epic cinematic universe is back with its most awaited chapter – Avatar: Fire and Ash, releasing across India on December 19 in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. The first-look poster for the film was released today as it introduces a new villain, Varang, who will be portrayed by Game Of Thrones actor Oona Chaplin.
Touted as the biggest Hollywood film in India, this third installment of the global phenomenon promises to transport audiences back to the breathtaking world of Pandora like never before. With returning stars like Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver, the film is poised to draw both old fans and new viewers into its expansive world. Sharing the intriguing poster of the villain 'Varang', the makers wrote, 'Meet Varang in Avatar: Fire and Ash. Watch the film in theatres December 19th." Soon after the poster was unveiled, fans expressed their excitement for the upcoming film.
20th Century Studios India will release Avatar: Fire and Ash on December 19 in 6 languages, English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada.
Earlier, in an interview with Empire, James Cameron opened up about the character Varang, the fearsome leader of the 'Ash Clan'. 'Varang is the leader of a people who have gone through an incredible hardship. She's hardened by that. She will do anything for them, even things that we would consider to be evil," he said.
He said Oona Chaplin's portrayal of Varang is very compelling that he didn't fully realize how powerful her performance was until the Wētā animation came through. He added that while Varang is an adversary, Chaplin brings her to life with such realism and depth that she feels truly alive on screen.
According to Variety, Fire and Ash was filmed back-to-back with the 2022 film Avatar: The Way of Water. The previous movie portrayed the ongoing conflict between humanity and the Na'vi after the return of the exploitative Resources Development Administration (RDA) to Pandora. By the conclusion of The Way of Water, Jake Sully (Worthington) and Neytiri (Saldana) manage to repel an RDA attack against the aquatic Metkayina clan and their whale-like companions, the Tulkuns. However, the battle comes at a great cost, as their eldest son is killed, and the RDA continues to maintain a strong presence on Pandora.
The story of Fire and Ash will continue shortly after these events, with Jake and Neytiri encountering the Ash People.
