May 24—The Lobos have some work to do Sunday.
New Mexico shot a 17-over-par 377 during Saturday's second round of the NCAA Championship, bringing their two-round score to 26-over in the 30-team tournament hosted by Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.

Now tied for 27th place, the Lobos are in danger of missing the tournament's first cut following Sunday's penultimate round of stroke play. After that, the field is cut in half and 15 teams compete for eight spots in the championship-deciding match play format. Arizona State leads the tournament at 13-under while San Diego (+34) is in last place. Only five teams in the field are under-par.
"You can't compete at this level if you can't put four scores together ... We are going to have to dig deep tomorrow," head coach Jake Harrington said in a release Saturday. "We have to play with some pride and some heart, play for each other and see what happens."
The only Lobo to put up a red score Saturday, sophomore Wyatt Provence (+9) led UNM with a 1-under 71. Sophomore Oliver Cage (+4) also recorded his second-straight 2-over 74 and has the best cumulative score of any Lobo this week.
"I am proud of Wyatt Provence with how he bounced back from yesterday's disappointment to shoot 1-under," Harrington said. "Ollie had another steady round that easily could have been under par today."

Senior Carson Herron (+17) recorded a 5-over 77 while freshman Clark Sonnenberg (+10) and junior Mesa Falleur carded an 11-over 83 and a 13-over 85, respectively.
After Saturday, UNM has now made 13 double bogeys to tie for the most among the field.
The Lobos are also tied for the sixth-most bogeys (41) and have made only 22 birdies; Wake Forest, South Carolina and Troy are last in the category with 21.

Aussie gets second MLB life after trade deadline frenzy

Curtis Mead is positioned for a second Major League Baseball life in Chicago after the Australian infielder was swept up in a flurry of trade deadline action. The Adelaide native will head to the White Sox from Tampa Bay in a deal that sent breakout pitcher Adrian Houser to the Rays. Mead, 24, was a top-50 prospect in his first two seasons at the Rays. But the big-hitter - the first Australian to register an RBI (runs batted in) in a playoff game in 2023 - has bounced between the Rays and their Triple-A affiliate Durham Bulls during his three years there. Curtis Mead extends the lead to 7-0 with an RBI double down the left field line! — Durham Bulls (@DurhamBulls) July 31, 2025 The White Sox (40-69), comfortably last in the American League ahead of playoffs and with a better record than only the battling National League outfit Colorado (28-80) are building under general manager Chris Getz. Pitcher Houser was a buy-low prospect who excelled in a cameo after being cut from the Texas Rangers. Getz sees the upside in Mead, who joined Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Liam Hendriks as the only Australians on opening-day rosters this season. He batted .226 in 49 games with Tampa Bay this season, with three home runs and eight RBIs. A versatile defender who played 42 career games at second base, 40 at third and 20 at first, Mead has hit .238 with five home runs and 20 RBIs across 111 games with the Rays. He also hit .264 with three homers and seven RBIs in 14 games this season with Durham. The former Adelaide Giants star was signed as an international free agent by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2018 and traded to the Rays 18 months later. There was a season lost to COVID-19 and then Mead spent two more grinding in the minor leagues before earning his Rays debut in 2023. Mead's trade was among dozens of deadline deals that capped a frenetic 24 hours as teams sought to improve their rosters ahead of the post season. All-Star shortstop Carlos Correa will return to Houston, the San Diego Padres went on a trading spree that brought in hard-throwing closer Mason Miller while the New York Yankees grabbed two-time All-Star reliever David Bednar. Outfielder Cedric Mullins was dealt to the New York Mets while Shane Bieber is joining the Toronto Blue Jays.

NFL world reacts to virtual measurement system's debut at Hall of Fame Game

Move over, chain gang. A new measurement system has been introduced to the NFL, and fans got their first glimpse of it during Thursday's preseason game between the Detroit Lions and the Los Angeles Chargers. The NFL's virtual measurement system debuted during the first half of the Hall of Fame Game after a 10-yard run by Lions running back Craig Reynolds. Rather than having the chain gang run out to the field, the officials simply waited for the virtual measurement system to calculate whether the veteran running back had made the line to gain. Below is a look at how the process played out: The virtual measurement was handled efficiently and didn't disrupt the flow of the game. That left several prominent NFL voices impressed with the process and optimistic it will serve as a quality replacement for the chain gang, which remains on the sideline in case of an emergency. However, a smaller cohort was reluctant to trust the new protocol. Others joked the process would be less aesthetically appealing than watching the chain gang determine whether a player generated a first down. As long as the NFL's virtual measurement process remains efficient, the league will probably not have too many regrets about switching to it as the primary method for measuring first downs. Kate Martin and Veronica Burton help the Valkyries hold off the Mystics 68-67

WASHINGTON (AP) — Kate Martin scored 14 points, Veronica Burton had 10 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds, and the Golden State Valkyries held off the Washington Mystics 68-67 on Thursday night. Temi Fagbenle put Golden State ahead 66-65 with 5:34 remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Valkyries didn't make their next field goal until Janelle Salaun's layup with a minute left to cap the scoring. After a missed 3-pointer by the Mystics with 37 seconds left, the Valkyries worked the clock down before calling a timeout with 3 seconds left on the shot clock. Salaun missed a shot in the lane and Golden State grabbed the offensive rebound before turning it over to give the Mystics another chance. Brittney Sykes' floater in the lane bounced off the rim as time expired. Sonia Citron, coming off a career-high 28 points on Tuesday against Chicago, scored 16 points for Washington (13-14). Shakira Austin and Kiki Iriafen each added 10 points. Iliana Rupert scored all 11 of her points in the first half and Fagbenle finished with 10 for Golden State (13-13). Tiffany Hayes became the 42nd player in WNBA history to play 10,000 minutes. Golden State made 10 of 14 field goals in the first quarter, including 5 of 8 from 3-point range, to take a 30-20 lead. The Valkyries scored 38 points the rest of the way. Washington went on a 14-2 run spanning halftime to get within 46-41 on Sykes' 3-pointer from the top of the key. The Mystics took their first lead with 7:20 left on Emily Engstler's 3-pointer from the corner. ___ AP WNBA:
