Joaquin Niemann wants to join Rory McIlroy at Australian Open in December
Chilean gun Niemann has won a staggering five times from LIV's 11 events in 2025 and could seal the season-long individual title in Chicago this week.
His winning run would arguably have him in the world's top 10 if LIV players were given world ranking points.
Amid a renewed request from LIV officials to get points, Niemann said he hoped those in charge of the world rankings, including former Masters champion Trevor Immelman, would do the 'right thing'.
He said he tried not to think about where he would sit in the world pecking order and what it could mean for majors qualification, given there were no rankings points on offer just yet.
'It's not something that I think about to tell myself in the mirror, Joaco, you are No.5 …- no, I don't do that,' he said.
'That's not my job. I feel like I'm just here to do my best and try to make as many birdies as possible and to make the crowd enjoy us playing golf around the world.
'I feel like the ranking system is not up to me, it's up to them. I'm expecting that they're going to do the right thing for golf.'
Niemann has played in the past two Australian Opens, winning in 2023, using the event, as well as the Australian PGA, to get crucial ranking points.
His recent Open and PGA experiences, as well as playing in the LIV event in Adelaide, have made Australia a favourite destination and he's keen to join McIlroy, who will be the headline act when the Open returns to Royal Melbourne.
'We'll see what's going to happen with everything else, but I would love to go back to Australia,' he said.
'(Royal Melbourne) is one of my favourite golf courses that I've played. Also, I think Australian golf has probably the best courses in the world, and I feel like more than just the tournament, it's just I really enjoy going there and playing golf in Australia in front of those people. It's a lot of fun.'
Australian Open officials hope both the lure of ranking points, and spots in the 2026 British Open for a top three-finish in the event, as well as the Australian PGA, lure a raft of other stars to join McIlroy, Adam Scott, Cam Smith and now likely Niemann in the field.

Injury carnage as Broncos stars Adam Reynolds and Ezra Mam suffer hamstring blows in same play
Brisbane have lost both of their halves to the same injury in one play with Adam Reynolds and Ezra Mam limping off AAMI Park in a major blow to their hopes of beating Melbourne and their charge to the NRL finals. Reynolds and Mam tried to chase down Xavier Coates after the Storm winger intercepted the ball 10 metres out from the tryline. While Selwyn Cobbo pulled off a miracle try-saving tackle, taking Coates into touch as he attempted to get the ball down, the play still proved extremely costly for the visitors. The halves both suffered hamstring injuries and left the field, 21 minutes into the first half, with Brisbane ahead 2-0. 'This is extraordinary,' commentator Mat Thompson said. 'I have never seen that — two halves go down on the same play with the same injury.' Reynolds, 35, was seen in the change-room taking off his boots while Brisbane confirmed soon after that Mam's match was also over. They will both go for scans to determine the severity of the injuries, with any stint on the sidelines putting a dent in sixth-placed Brisbane's hopes of a top-four berth.

‘It's a car crash': Horror collision between Jeremy Howe and Jai Newcombe stuns the MCG
Jeremy Howe and Jai Newcombe have both been left in a bad way following a horror head clash in the early stages of Collingwood's huge Thursday night clash with Hawthorn. Just over one minute into the first quarter at the MCG, Mitch Lewis took a mark and kicked the ball into space coming out of Hawthorn's defence, leading to a chase between Howe and Newcombe. FOX FOOTY, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every match of every round in the 2025 Toyota AFL Premiership Season LIVE in 4K, with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? The two players arrived at about the same time and made a huge impact, with returning Pies star Howe seemingly knocked out instantly and left flat on his back as Newcombe collapsed on all fours. 'Lewis puts it into a turnover situation and Newcombe and Howe collide in front of the benches,' Mark Howard said on Fox Footy. 'They're both down, Howe looks worst of all, Newcombe holding his head. Big clash.' David King said immediately: 'They've got to stop the game. They've got to stop the game. He's out.' Jack Riewoldt added: 'Oh, Jeremy Howe has not moved.' Howe, 35, was making his return to the Collingwood side following three weeks out with a groin injury. 'Back into the side for the first time since round 18, such an important player,' Howard said. 'It was a ball positioned directly between the two of them. 'Newcombe cannoned into Howe coming in the opposite direction and it was an enormous clash between the two.' The game was stopped for more than five minutes as Collingwood's medical staff attended to Howe before he was taken from the field on a medicab. The veteran put his hands to his face and then was seen moving his fingers as the medicab took him from the ground to applause from the big crowd. 'Yeah it's a car crash,' King said during a replay of the incident. 'Credit to both players, Howe bodylined the ball and Newcombe put himself in harm's way. 'Incredibly brave but he just had a head clash there. It's sickening to watch. 'This is what these guys subject themselves to at the highest level. A clash at that speed.' King was then thinking of those watching on when he added: 'Just remember, these guys, they get the very best of care. 'Unbelievable medical expertise out there and it's tough to watch for family and friends at home, but this is what these guys do.' Howe was immediately subbed out of the game, while Newcombe was also assessed by the Hawthorn medical staff before returning to the match midway through the first term.

Plus Parramatta hooker Ryley Smith show he's as impressive off the field as well as on it. He explained how he still has to pinch himself when he comes up against the likes of Harry Grant or NSW hooker Reece Robson who he'll take on this weekend.
