Not all QR codes are safe, Kaspersky warns

SINGAPORE: The usage of quick response (QR) codes among Malaysians has become the new normal — from banking services and exchanging contacts to ordering food.
However, with the rise in QR code usage, cybersecurity firm Kaspersky has cautioned Malaysians to remain vigilant against a growing threat: QR scams.
According to Kaspersky's lead security researcher Noushin Shabab, QR scams are a new form of cyber threat in which attackers generate malicious QR codes that compromise users' cyber safety.
"QR scams happen when a code is turned into a malicious one, potentially stealing users' information or money, or causing other complications that jeopardise their safety.
"With increased usage of QR codes in Malaysia, more attackers are seeing this as an opportunity to exploit," she said in an interview with Bernama at GITEX Asia 2025, Marina Bay Sands today.
According to the DataReportal Digital 2025 Global Overview Report, Malaysia ranks second after China in QR code usage, with 66.1 per cent of the population actively using them.
Noushin explained that QR scams often involve attackers replacing legitimate QR codes in public places with malicious ones, tricking unsuspecting users into scanning them.
"These malicious QR codes are usually placed over original ones on billboards or posters and redirect victims to an attacker's website," she said.
Meanwhile, Kaspersky's security evangelist Oleg Gorobets said users can protect themselves by installing certified security software on their phones that can detect suspicious activity, including malicious QR codes.
"Attackers use different algorithms to mimic the original website's structure, redirecting users to a fake one. A good security solution will detect and block this threat," he said.
Additionally, Noushin advised users to take extra precautions when scanning QR codes in public spaces and to always verify the source.
"For example, if there's a random QR sticker on a billboard or wall — that's not safe.
"Or if someone you just met offers a QR code to connect with them — that's also a red flag. Know the source. Ask where it came from, why it's there, and what it leads to before scanning," she said.
Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department recently reported 12,110 cases of online fraud or scams nationwide in the first quarter of 2025, involving RM573.7 million in losses versus 10,715 cases valued at RM519.9 million in October-December 2024. – Bernama

Moomoo Malaysia launches campaign to drive retail investor growth and capability

MOOMOO MALAYSIA has launched a strategic investor development campaign supported by Bursa Malaysia in conjunction with Bursa Malaysia's Shares2U programme, aimed at equipping Malaysian retail investors with the tools, incentives, and market structure needed to engage capital markets with greater confidence and competence. Running from June 6 to July 7, the co-branded campaign blends incentive-led onboarding with performance-based learning. New and experienced investors alike can access a streamlined, technology-driven trading experience via the Moomoo Malaysia platform, which offers tools, insights, and live data to support smarter investment decisions. The campaign introduces a two-pronged opportunity for Malaysians to build investing confidence through: > Rewards worth up to RM 2,200 for new Moomoo users, including RM400 worth of Bursa-listed stocks > A national Malaysia stock trading challenge that is open to all users, with a total prize pool of up to RM14,000, designed to sharpen real-market trading skills. Central to the campaign is Moomoo's emphasis on capability-building. The platform delivers real-time market data, advanced screeners, and analytics tools typically used by professional investors tailored for Malaysian users. By aligning incentives with trading education and decision-making, the campaign supports more informed, self-directed participation in Malaysia's capital markets. Moomoo Malaysia chief executive officer Ivan Mok said 'The long-term health of Malaysia's capital markets will be shaped not by short-term retail surges, but by sustained, self-directed investor capability. 'This campaign supports that trajectory — not just through access to market, but through informed engagement with the market. 'In partnership with Bursa Malaysia, we're combining institutional trust with our professional-grade, real-time trading tools to help Malaysians become active, smart and informed participants in the stock market.' Elevating investor literacy Unlike traditional campaigns focused solely on incentives, this initiative emphasises market experience and financial literacy. The Moomoo platform provides Malaysian users with institutional-grade tools — including real-time data feeds, advanced screeners, and analytics — in a retail-accessible environment. This technology-first approach is intended to strengthen trading discipline and investor readiness across market cycles. 'With markets entering a more uncertain phase — from renewed trade tensions to sector-level volatility — the gap between simply participating and investing with discipline is becoming more obvious,' Mok observed. 'In this environment, investors need more than access. They need the tools and experience to think strategically, manage risk, and stay engaged. 'That's the focus of this campaign — to help investors build capability in real time, with the tools and experience to think strategically, manage risk, and stay engaged in the market,' he added. The trading challenge is open to all users, while additional rewards are available exclusively to new users who meet the qualifying deposit criteria. For more information, click here .

Malaysia to host ASEAN Librarians Congress amid digital-era challenges

KUALA LUMPUR: More than 1,000 library and information professionals from across Southeast Asia will gather in Kuala Lumpur next week for a regional congress focused on the future of librarianship in an increasingly digital world. The 19th Congress of Southeast Asian Librarians (CONSAL XIX 2025), taking place from June 16 to 19, will bring together delegates from all 10 ASEAN member states to promote knowledge sharing and cross-border cooperation in a sector undergoing rapid technological change. National Library of Malaysia director-general Edy Irwan Zulkafli said that while the library sector faces growing pressure from rapid technological change, it is adapting by embracing digital tools to enhance public access to information and services. 'With CONSAL XIX 2025 as a platform, we are able to discuss issues related to librarianship at both the national and ASEAN levels, while offering insights and recommendations to countries that are still developing their library services,' he said. He was speaking to Bernama after briefing on CONSAL XIX 2025 at the National Library here today. The congress, he added, will provide platform to address common challenges, with each country presenting a Country Report outlining developments, initiatives and obstacles in the field of library and information science. The four-day programme will include keynote addresses, academic paper presentations and interactive sessions, as well as exhibitions and library visits across Kuala Lumpur, Shah Alam, Petaling Jaya and Negeri Sembilan. A high-level session involving the heads of ASEAN delegations will also be held to strengthen regional collaboration. Malaysia will host CONSAL for the third time, following previous editions in 1981 and 1996, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expected to officiate this year's congress at the World Trade Centre, themed 'Inclusive Knowledge: Bridging Divides, Empowering All'.
