'I just knew he was up to something crazy': Hero marine tackles passenger trying to open plane door mid-flight

Time of India28-05-2025
A US Marine shared a moment he wrestled a disruptive passenger to the ground to prevent him from opening a plane's emergency exit mid-air.
Sgt Maj Jody Armentrout, 50, said his instincts kicked in when a man began behaving oddly on Saturday morning's All Nippon Airways flight from Japan to Texas.
The long-serving Marine, who has spent more than two decades in the US Marine Corps, said he first noticed the passenger wandering aimlessly between bathrooms. 'He came out of that one and began pacing up and down the aisle, so that just threw my radar on,' Armentrout told NBC News. 'His eyes — you could definitely tell there was something going on.'
When the passenger began tampering with an emergency exit, Armentrout jumped into action.
'He grabbed a strap around the door, pulled it off, and about that time is when I took him and slammed him, put him on the ground,' he said.
Another older passenger helped restrain the man, while Armentrout zip-tied him to a seat. The Houston-bound flight was then diverted to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, where the man, reportedly undergoing a medical crisis, was taken to hospital. He has not been charged, the New York Post reported.

Japan based Armentrout, stayed seated beside the passenger for the remainder of the journey and said he acted out of concern for others onboard. 'I just knew he was up to something crazy, and at the end of the day, I was willing to take the risk of him saying 'I'm not doing anything' and then just them making him go sit back down than me allowing him to do anything that's going to put anybody at risk.'
Several passengers thanked the Marine for his quick thinking and bravery, especially as there were babies and families on the flight.
However, the drama didn't end there. Upon landing in Seattle, another passenger, reportedly angry about the diversion, punched a bathroom door. The FBI confirmed that this person, too, was removed by Port of Seattle Police but had not been charged as of Wednesday.
Reflecting on the incident, Armentrout simply said, 'It was a weird flight.'

Sensitisation drive after dad, son face language harassment at Noida hotel

1 2 Kolkata: The Indian multinational hospitality chain of leased and franchised hotels, passed on an internal message to all hotels under its platform to not discriminate against any guest on the basis of caste, creed, religion, language, or nationality. The internal message was circulated a day after TOI reported how a techie from New Town, along with his 14-year-old son — a national-level skater — in Noida for a skating championship, was allegedly denied hotel stay, which he booked through OYO, in Sector 44 after being mistaken for Bangladeshis. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee also reacted to the issue on Thursday, asking why BJP-ruled states were not respecting the Bengali language. "I got to know about an incident that a techie was not allowed to stay in a hotel in Noida with his son simply because he spoke in Bengali. If I respect your language, why will you not respect mine?" she said at a govt programme commemorating the 12th anniversary of the Kanyashree social welfare scheme. The family shifted to another hotel in Sector 49 while OYO apologised to the guest. Noida Police also denied issuing any such directives, stating only ID checks for Bangladeshi nationals with valid documents are required. "The moment we saw the video, we started an enquiry. We have asked the owner of the hotel Meera Eternity to give us proof of which police officer may have asked them to deny guests on the basis of the language or address. We believe the hotel already resold the room to some other guest and thus made up the story, taking advantage of the current language row. We have already taken strict action against them, and following the enquiry, we may de-roster the hotel permanently from our platform," said a senior official. "OYO does not promote any form of discrimination based on race, religion, language, region, or ethnicity. Such behaviour is a clear violation of our policies, the law, and the values we uphold. OYO remains committed to ensuring safe, respectful, and inclusive stays, and any partner found engaging in discriminatory practices faces strict action, including permanent removal from our network," OYO said in a statement. The incident comes amidst a political storm that erupted since the start of the month following a letter — allegedly from the Delhi Police Lodhi Colony station — requesting a translator for the "Bangladeshi language," igniting outrage across India, especially in Bengali-speaking regions. "I am glad the company has addressed the issue and hope no one else faces harassment and humiliation like I faced," said the software engineer. Cops suspect there are more victims in Vizag honey trap case

Visakhapatnam: The investigation into the honey-trap case involving 28-year-old Koruprolu Joy Jamima and her accomplices has revealed that they cheated multiple men, including some wealthy individuals, an NRI, and others from Vizag city and surrounding areas. The gang's modus operandi involved befriending victims through social media, gaining their trust, and then extorting large sums of money from them. Joy Jamima was initially arrested by Bheemili police in Vizag city in October 2024 for duping an NRI man through Instagram and later cheating him by indulging in extortion and causing poisoning. She was released on bail but was arrested again by MVP police in August 2025 for allegedly cheating and duping another man using the same tactics. The police investigation has revealed that Joy Jamima would approach rich persons through social media networks, befriend them, and cheat them in the name of love and marriage. She would offer sedative-laced drinks to her victims, and her accomplices would then take private photos of Joy Jamima and the victim, which would be used to extort money by threatening to upload the photos on social media. Apart from the honey trap, Joy Jamima has also allegedly used another tactic to dupe individuals. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo She would lodge police complaints against wealthy individuals, alleging that she was deceived and sexually assaulted under the guise of a love marriage, and then blackmail them and collect money from them. The police have so far arrested five members of the honey-trap gang, including Polamarasetti Ratnaraju, one of the prime accused. The investigation has revealed that large amounts of money were transferred between Ratnaraju and Joy Jamima. The police suspect that Joy Jamima's gang may have duped more victims in the Vizag region, but many may not have reported the crime out of shame. Vizag city police chief Dr. Shanka Brata Bagchi has appealed to potential victims to come forward without fear, assuring that their identities will not be revealed. Bengaluru fire tragedy: 2 building owners held for violations

Bengaluru: Two building owners were arrested Sunday in connection with a fire in a multi-storey building at Ganigarapete, near Thigalarapete, that claimed five lives Saturday. Police said the arrested are Balakrishnayya Shetty, 68, and his nephew Sandeep Shetty, 44, a central govt employee. Deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar, who visited the spot Sunday and was briefed by city police commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh and DCP (central) Akshay Machindra Hakay, said he was "shocked" at such constructions. According to him, nearly 70% of buildings in the city were illegal, including several in newly developed BDA layouts. "They are constructing ground+four floors. The Supreme Court has directed that those without occupancy certificates should not be given water or power connections. We have already stopped 4 lakh such connections," he said. "Once the cabinet decides, we will take further action. First, a survey will be done, followed by the issuance of notices. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? Describing the spot, he added: "...No big vehicle can enter the narrow lanes. The fire and emergency personnel and police made their best efforts to douse the fire. There were chances of a stampede, but they handled it well. The only legal option now is to demolish the building." Shivakumar has sought a detailed report on the incident from officials. Madan Kumar Purohit, 36, Sangeeta Kanwar, 32, their children Mitesh, 8, and Vihan, 5; and Suresh Kumar, 26, died in the fire tragedy. Quoting police, Shivakumar said the ground floor was used to store plastic, rubber items and chemicals in spray cans. Purohit ran his business on the ground floor and lived with his family on the upper floors. Firefighters were forced to break into the adjacent building to gain entry into the Shetty family's premises. Hakay said a case has been registered at Halasurgate police station under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 324 (mischief). Preliminary investigation revealed several violations in the building. Constructed in 1985, the ground+three floor structure has no setback area. BBMP has no clarity yet if the building has a sanctioned plan or whether it was permitted for residential or commercial use. Investigators found it was used for both. Fire extinguishers were absent. The fire is suspected to have started due to a short circuit, though officials are awaiting reports from electrical inspectors, BBMP, and fire and emergency services, who collected evidence Sunday. Investigators described the building's condition as hazardous. The staircase was only one-and-a-half feet wide. Each floor was partitioned into small rooms measuring 8x10 sqft or less, with only one common washroom per floor. Corridors and passages were closed with grills, leaving no entry point for firefighters. Stored on the ground floor were steel, rubber foot mats, plastic items, and suspected chemical substances. Officers said the building appeared overloaded with inflammable material. Alterations had been made, including dangling electrical wiring. All five victims died of suffocation before their bodies were charred in the blaze. The cramped design and poor ventilation made firefighting difficult. The operation lasted nearly 15 hours as the fire could not be brought under control quickly. A senior officer said: "There is no accountability for how much inflammable material was stored. Many such buildings with major violations exist in Nagarathpete. While police can book cases, the responsibility lies with BBMP and other civic authorities to act against them. If police alone start cracking down, we will be accused of misusing our powers." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
