Elgin Ice Rink to close due to 'spiralling energy costs'
A leading industry figure previously warned many of Scotland's ice rinks faced closure due to crippling energy bills.
The board said it was a "difficult" decision to close the ice rink.A statement said: "Moray Leisure Centre has seen its energy costs double, and the board have had to review the full operation at Moray Leisure Centre."The board have made a decision to close the area which generates the least amount of income and consumes the most energy, which is the ice rink."The board said the cost of running the ice rink threatened the financial sustainability of the whole leisure centre.
'Very disappointing'
A board spokesperson said: "Despite our best efforts to secure a future for the ice rink, Moray Leisure Centre's overall operation has effectively subsidised the ice rink's operation for the past six years."Rising energy bills means this has now reached a level where it is unaffordable."We know that the closure of the ice rink will be very disappointing for those who use the facility and for the coaches and clubs who depend upon it."Moray Council leader Kathleen Robertson said it would be "devastating" for users, but added it was an also an "understandable measure" to protect the rest of the facility.

Rail strikes resume with bank holiday shutdown on CrossCountry trains
Rail strikes will resume over the August bank holiday weekend, with walkouts planned at CrossCountry trains. Members of the RMT have been called out on Saturday 23 and bank holiday Monday (25 August) in a dispute over what the union calls a 'breakdown in industrial action'. The RMT will also order members not to scan tickets on trains from Sunday 24 August onwards. CrossCountry has a network stretching from Aberdeen to Penzance, with its main hub at Birmingham New Street. It links key cities including Bristol, Manchester, Leeds, York, Newcastle and Edinburgh, and serves London Stansted airport. Eddie Dempsey, general secretary of the RMT, told members: 'I would like to congratulate you and your colleagues again for returning a splendid result in the ballot for industrial action. 'This dispute is about protecting the future of your jobs, the protection of negotiated agreements and the right of your union to represent you effectively.' In previous strikes CrossCountry has maintained a skeleton operation with a sharply reduced number of routes and trains. The Independent has sought responses from Arriva, the company that runs the CrossCountry operation, and the Department for Transport. Last summer, Labour claimed to resolved two years of frequent stoppages by members of the two main rail unions, the RMT and Aslef – representing the train drivers' union. This strike, however, suggests peace might not yet have arrived.

Enzo Maresca shares plan for promising Brazilian teenager following transfer
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has called for restraint from supporters regarding the highly anticipated arrival of Brazilian prodigy Estevao Willian. The 18-year-old's £29 million transfer from Palmeiras was initially agreed in May 2024, but he remained in Brazil for a year, even finding the net against his new club during a Club World Cup encounter in the United States in July. Having netted 27 goals and provided 15 assists across 83 appearances for Palmeiras, Estevao finally completed his move to west London this week. Widely regarded as one of Brazil 's most promising young talents, Maresca is keen to ensure that expectations surrounding Estevao are tempered ahead of the upcoming season. 'We need to pay a little bit more attention, because first of all he's from the other part of the world and also he's very, very young,' he said. 'So we need to pay attention. 'As I said, (he is) not under pressure, give him happiness, give him time, he needs to adapt. Hopefully we can give him minutes, so he's even more happy. But for sure, he's a talented player. 'For me, the biggest mistake we can do with him is to put him under pressure. He's very young, he needs to adapt. 'I met him for the first time in the USA when we played against Palmeiras. He's a fantastic player, he's very young, he's a happy boy. He's always laughing, typical from a Brazilian guy, and we need to keep him happy.' Estevao is one of six summer signings expected to be part of Maresca's squad this season. And with 10 departures it has been another summer of change at the club's Cobham training base. Maresca has previously said he expects players to be able to play in a number of roles and wants at least two players for each position. Nominally a winger, Estevao is likely to be deployed across Chelsea's attacking line. 'He can play everywhere,' said Maresca. 'He's so good. For me, he's like Cole (Palmer), in terms of – careful – he is like Cole in terms of his position. 'He can play outside, he can play inside, he can play everywhere. In our five attacking positions, for me, he can play everywhere.' Maresca confirmed that defender Levi Colwill is a doubt for the start of the new Premier League season. The Blues kick off at home to Crystal Palace on August 17 but after picking up a knock in training the 22-year-old could miss out, possibly opening the door to new defensive signing from Ajax, Jorrel Hato. 'We had a problem the last two days with Levi Colwill, that we don't know how long he is going to be out,' said Maresca. 'So for us, we will see, hopefully not too long, but for sure it's a problem for us. We need to wait, we don't know yet.'

Bank of England cuts interest rates for fifth time in a year
The Bank of England has cut UK interest rates from 4.25 per cent to 4 per cent, the lowest level since March 2023, despite forecasting a sharp rise in inflation. For the first time in the Monetary Policy Committee 's history, it required a second vote to achieve a 5-4 majority for the move. This interest rate cut is expected to reduce government debt payment costs, a move welcomed by Chancellor Rachel Reeves. The Bank raised its economic growth forecast for 2025 to 1.25 per cent but warned that inflation is now set to peak at 4 per cent in September, driven by higher energy and food prices. Inflation is projected to return to the 2 per cent target rate by 2027.
