Singaporean tourist arrested in Pattaya for flying drone amid Thailand's nationwide ban
The man, identified as a 44-year-old tourist surnamed Goh by Pattaya Special Affairs officers, was said to have flown a drone along Walking Street in the city's entertainment district without authorisation at around 12.20am on Aug 7, Thai media reported.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand on July 30 banned drone-flying nationwide amid heightened national security concerns and tensions along the kingdom's border with Cambodia.
Upon questioning through a translator, the man told Pattaya City police officers that he was a keen photographer and was operating the drone to capture a high-angle view of Walking Street at night.
Walking Street is known for its lively nightlife.
The man did not have a licence to operate an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), Thai police said.
His equipment, including the drone, a remote control, glasses and spare batteries, were confiscated by the police.
The ban on flying drones will last minimally until Aug 15, 2025, or if a decision is made, Thai aviation authorities said, with military officers authorised to shoot down illegal UAVs.
Offenders of the Air Navigation Act face a 40,000 baht (S$1,600) fine and a one-year prison term.
On Aug 3, a Swedish tourist was similarly arrested for using a drone in the vicinity of a Pattaya beach. He was released with a warning and had his device confiscated, Thai media outlet Khaosod reported.

Families urge Thailand to transfer Malaysian burn victims
BANGKOK: The families of two Malaysian tourists who were set on fire here last week have requested that Thai authorities allow them to be transferred to Malaysia as soon as they are medically fit. The two, identified as Gan Xiao Zhen, 27, and boyfriend Ong Yik Leong, 26, were attacked by a jobless man who allegedly splashed thinner before setting them on fire near a shopping mall at Ratchadamri Road on Thursday night. Gan Kin In, 80, said his daughter had arrived in Bangkok the night before for a holiday. 'I felt uneasy when Xiao Zhen told me a week ago that she planned to go to Thailand for a holiday with her boyfriend. 'There have been too many incidents happening there this year. I did not feel it was the right time to go but Xiao Zhen convinced me that it was safe,' he told Bernama when met at the King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital on Saturday. Kin In said both families asked for a medical report on the victims' condition during a briefing with Thai authorities and hospital medical staff members. He said the families hoped that the victims could be sent back to Malaysia as soon as possible due to accommodation constraints here. 'We hope a medical report can be provided so that we can consult our own doctors in Malaysia on their current condition,' he said. Kin In said Xiao Zhen, who was admitted to the Burn Unit, suffered 36% second-degree burns to her face, chest and arm. 'She is conscious, in a stable condition and communicates by writing. The doctor informed us she might need about a month to recover,' he said. Yik Leong, who was treated in intensive care at the Police General Hospital, is also reported to be in a stable condition.

Malaysian Fire Attack Victims' Families Want Them Back Home From Bangkok
Subscribe to our FREE The families of two Malaysians who were set on fire in Bangkok want to bring them back to Malaysia as soon as doctors say it's safe. Gan Xiao Zhen, 27, and her boyfriend Ong Yik Leong, 26, were attacked by a jobless Thai man who threw paint thinner on them and set them on fire near a shopping mall on Thursday night. Gan's father, Gan Kin In, said his daughter had just arrived in Bangkok on Wednesday for a holiday, just one day before the attack happened. 'I felt worried when Xiao Zhen told me she wanted to go to Thailand. There have been too many bad things happening there this year. But she said it would be safe,' he told reporters. Fighting Red Tape to Bring Daughter Home Both families met with Thai officials and hospital doctors on Saturday (9 August). They asked for medical reports so they could talk to Malaysian doctors about bringing the victims home. 'We just got to Bangkok today. The Thai authorities arranged for us to visit them. We hope to get medical reports so our doctors in Malaysia can check if they can be moved back soon,' the father said. Gan is in the hospital's burn unit with 36% second-degree burns on her face, chest and arm. 'She's awake and stable. She talks by writing. The doctor said she needs about one month to recover,' her father added. When Desperation Turns Deadly The attack happened at 10 pm near Ratchaprasong intersection, a busy tourist area. Police identified the attacker as Warakorn Pabtaisong, 30, from Sa Kaeo province. Witnesses saw Warakorn talking to the couple earlier. Later, when the tourists were sitting on the mall steps, he came back, poured paint thinner on them and set them on fire as they tried to run. People nearby stopped the attacker and held him until the police came. Warakorn admitted to the attack but said he had nothing against the victims-he was stressed because he had no job and was hungry. Thailand Rushes to Contain Fallout The former boxer used to work as a security guard but was recently fired. He told police he hadn't eaten all day. Police found a 1.5-litre bottle of paint thinner and a lighter at the scene. Drug tests on Warakorn were negative. He now faces charges of attempted bodily harm. Meanwhile, Tourism Minister Sorawong Thienthong has ordered stricter security measures in tourist areas and is collaborating with Malaysian officials and hospitals to assist the victims. The ministry is also investigating compensation for the injured tourists and has deployed staff to monitor their treatment. 'Thailand will care for and protect all tourists with full capacity so that Thailand remains a safe destination,' the minister said.
