Lotus Might Switch Out the Emira's V6 for This Monster Motor

Miami Herald22-05-2025

In spite of the brand's mantra of "simplify, then add lightness" philosophy, British sports car manufacturer Lotus may have a trick up its sleeve to make its most prolific gas-powered car compliant with new, stricter vehicle emissions regulations in a key region where it sells cars.
According to a new report from Autocar UK, the Colin Chapman-founded brand may turn to its new engine partners, Mercedes-AMG, to provide a new V8 powertrain that can be stuffed behind the seats of the Emira. During the company's recent earnings call, Lotus CEO Feng Qingfeng said that the Geely-owned company is committed to offering a high-performance version of the Emira sports car, and that it is "currently investigating the feasibility of the V8" from AMG.
If you spend a lot of time noodling around car configurators online, you would know that Lotus currently offers Emira buyers a choice between two engines that live behind the seats. The first is a 2-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder called the M139, supplied by Mercedes-AMG and used in various models, including the SL43, C43, and C63 S E Performance. The second motor is a 3.5-liter supercharged V6 sourced from Toyota, which has been used in past Lotus cars.
Although Lotus claims that both engines produce upwards of 400 horsepower, the CEO felt that upgrading and boosting the power of the Toyota supercharged V6 would not be a good idea, since the antiquated unit wouldn't comply with the Euro 7 emissions rules set to take effect in 2026.
Originally, Lotus intended to phase out the V6 and solely offer the AMG turbo-four. However, the sudden popularity of the six-pot in the United States, an important market for the Brits, surprised Lotus execs.
"The US is an incredibly important market for us for the [Emira]," Lotus Cars Managing Director and Lotus Europe CEO Matt Windle told Autocar in a statement. It always has been. So we're looking at the market demand for the product going forward,"
Although he didn't confirm that a V8 was coming to the Emira, he said that the automaker is "looking at all the options" for more powerful powertrains, adding that "there are some opportunities with the current supplier of engines." He also noted that the mid-engined Emira is a "very, very competent product that we probably haven't exploited to its full potential already."
If Lotus were to manage to adapt the Emira chassis to shoehorn the 4-liter AMG V8 also found in the Aston Martin Vantage and DBX, it would mark the first time in nearly 21 years that it offered a V8-powered car in its lineup. The last V8-powered Lotus was the Series 4 Espirit V8, which was sold from 1996 to 2004, powered by Lotus's own 3.5-liter twin-turbo type 918 V8.
However, the inklings of a more powerful version of the Emira came during Lotus's earnings call on the suggestion of Kevin Coelho, a self-identified Lotus investor and California-based exotic car dealer, who asked if the company had any plans to make a "hardcore" Emira in the tune of Porsche's 911 GT3RS, with "a high revving V6, manual transmission, lightweight," adding, "I think that would do amazingly well here in the US market."
In response, Feng spoke through an interpreter who noted that "almost 50%" of Emira sales are to US customers, adding that it is "very clear that our US consumers would prefer an engine or model with a higher horsepower and higher RPM."
I got a chance to drive an Emira about a few months ago, and I found its 4-cylinder turbo AMG engine to be more than adequate as a loud, peppy powertrain that makes the 3,200-pound beast feel like a nimble beast around the course that was set up.
But knowing the kind of customer that is attracted to Lotus, it should be noted that the V6 is the only engine option that can be equipped with a manual transmission option. While I would personally configure my [figurative] Emira with a DCT because I anticipate bumper-to-bumper traffic, offering the choice is the difference here. It's not just the engine, it's also the gearbox, and for American buyers with the money to buy a Lotus, that's where their hearts decide.

TikTok's ad push as app ban looms

TikTok is pushing the app's benefits for teens into as many faces as it can as the under-16 social media ban looms at the end of this year. The social media giant took out sprawling ads in the Australian Financial Review last week, covering 4½ full pages with marketing, promoting the platform's utility for getting teens to read, engage with education and even cast a lure. The newspaper ads, along with a big spend on billboards and bus shelters, comes as the under-16 social media ban is just six months away. Advertisements in the May 26 edition of the AFR claim TikTok serves up 10 million videos in its science, technology, engineering, and maths feed. Another of the full-page ads extols the benefits of the massively popular 'bookTok' – TikTok's literary community. The third subject-specific ad claims Australian teenagers are 'getting outside', inspired by the platform's fishing content. A TikTok Australia spokesman said the company had also invested in billboard and bus shelter ads recently but was unable to provide numbers or details. In six months', any Australian under the age of 16 will be banned from all social media; YouTube has been granted an exemption on educational grounds, drawing the ire of the other platforms. How the social media ban will work is still up in the air. The federal government has been sitting on a report since January concerning Australians' attitudes toward age assurance technologies. A British company has been tasked with trialling which technologies could be used to implement the world first, under-16 ban. On Friday, that UK firm revealed a report on its findings had been pushed back to July.

On this day: multiple award wins for cheesemaker Shepherds Purse

On this day in 2024, the York Press reported that a North Yorkshire cheesemaker had scooped top honours at that year's Virtual Cheese Awards. Shepherds Purse became the first British producer to win two category golds in the same year, taking home Best Artisan Soft and Best Blue, alongside two additional class golds and three class bronze awards. The judges confirmed Buffalo Blue, by Shepherds Purse, as the artisan soft cheese category winner, saying: "It has an aroma that is clean and rich, which makes you want to dive in. "It has a great mouthfeel which is deceptively light and smooth, plus it has a rich and creamy taste." Yorkshire Blue topped the blue cheese category, with the panel describing it as "creamy but with a real hit of blue." More information about Shepherds Purse is available at

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen was at the center of yet another controversy on track, this time after colliding with George Russell during the final laps of the Spanish Grand Prix. Red Bull ordered Verstappen to give up a position to Russell after the two cars collided during the closing stages of the race. Verstappen vehemently disagreed with the switch, arguing that he was not in the wrong and should be allowed to keep his place on the radio. On track, Verstappen looked like he was going to let Russell through, but Verstappen rammed into the Mercedes car in a fit of rage. A 10-second time penalty was given to Verstappen, which dropped him from P5 to P10. "OH MY WORD MAX VERSTAPPEN HAS JUST INTENTIONALLY CRASHED INTO GEORGE RUSSELL WHATTTT 🤯🤯," @formula1god posted on X. "Max Verstappen is a sore loser, and i will never have an ounce of respect for him," someone else posted on X. "Max Verstappen is an absolute disgrace. Disgusting personality, awful attitude, constant cheat and moaner. Driver and team alike are a massive let down to the sport. An embarrassment for F1 truly," a third posted on X. This kind of scathing criticism has regularly been issued to Verstappen for his tendency to drive extremely aggressively. During his fight with Lewis Hamilton for the 2021 Drivers' Championship, Verstappen had several moments where he clashed with Hamilton, many of which were captured in Netflix's Drive To Survive. This angle of the Hamilton-Verstappen crash is absolutely nuts. That halo has saved Hamilton 😦 — Sioned Dafydd (@SionedDafydd) September 12, 2021 Verstappen has garnered a reputation, whether fairly or unfairly, as a driver willing to crash or have contact if it means that his competitor is also knocked out of the race. This reputation leads drivers, most notably Lando Norris, to race carefully to avoid collisions, knowing that Verstappen will likely not provide the necessary space through certain areas. Last season, George Russell got into a war of words with Verstappen regarding the Dutch driver's on-track behavior and hot-headed nature. "People have been bullied by Max for years now, and you can't question his driving abilities. But he cannot deal with adversity," Russell said in December about Verstappen. "Whenever anything has gone against him, he lashes out. Budapest this year, the very first race the car wasn't dominant, crashing into Lewis [Hamilton], slamming his team.." Verstappen has said on numerous occasions that he does not mind what other people think about his driving style, claiming all he wants to do is win. While the four-time champion is known to drive beyond his car's limits and extract pace out of nowhere, that same ability translates over to his on-track fights, leaving Formula 1 as a whole left to take the brilliance with the erratic behavior.
