One of its kind: Exclusive BMW i7 Singapore Icon pays tribute to the nation's 60th birthday

CNA16-07-2025
A one-of-a-kind BMW i7 electric luxury sedan has been unveiled in Singapore, created as a tribute to the country's 60th anniversary and BMW Asia's four decades of presence in the region.
The bespoke model, named BMW i7 Singapore Icons, was revealed by BMW Asia on Jul 15. It is the only unit produced and will not be replicated, making it the rarest BMW i7 in the country.
'Planning for this masterpiece began 18 months ago and was a labour of love,' said Lars Nielsen, managing director, BMW Group Asia. 'It is a celebration of icons and was created to be one itself.'
He continued: 'This exceptional vehicle celebrates a nation whose journey to excellence is built on decades of strong leadership, innovation and ambition, in the same way that BMW has advanced over the last 40 years in Singapore.'
Every detail in the car's design was selected to represent milestones in Singapore's national journey and BMW Asia's 40th anniversary.
This includes a custom Madeira Red paint from Rolls-Royce that gives the car a rich, dark cherry finish. It is the first and only car in Singapore to feature this colour, with no further models planned in the same hue.
A specially designed insignia bearing the 'Singapore Icons' logo has been laser-etched into the Hofmeister kink − a signature element in BMW's design language − and the 21-inch, 20-spoke wheels are produced exclusively by BMW Individual.
Inside, the sedan features Merino leather upholstery in Smoke White, contrasted by Alaska Grey embroidery and custom stitching of the Singapore Icons logo across all four headrests.
The centrepiece of the interior is a dashboard inlay showcasing seven Singaporean landmarks – Singapore Changi Control Tower, Marina Bay Sands, the Merlion, Gardens by the Bay Supertree Grove, Anderson Bridge, the ArtScience Museum, and the Singapore Flyer − laser-cut into a single 25.7cm-wide piece of metal, and integrated seamlessly into fine oak-grey wood.
The BMW i7 Singapore Icons has been purchased by Choo Wai Luen, whose family business, Kwong Cheong Thye Pte Ltd, marks its 133rd anniversary this year. Choo acquired the vehicle through Eurokars Group.

BMW profits slump on China woes, US tariffs

[FRANKFURT] BMW said on Thursday (Jul 31) its profits slumped by a third in the second quarter as the German premium carmaker was hit hard by falling sales in key market China and US tariffs. Net profit for the April-June period plunged 32 per cent from a year earlier to 1.8 billion euros (S$2.66 billion), the manufacturer said in a statement. Revenues slipped eight per cent to 34 billion euros as sales fell 14 per cent in China, where German carmakers are facing fierce competition from local rivals, particularly when it comes to electric vehicles. US import taxes on cars and vehicle parts, introduced by US President Donald Trump in April as part of his tariff blitz, also hit earnings, the group said, without giving a precise figure. However, BMW said it expects the levies to reduce the profit margins on its car sales this year by 1.25 per cent points. The group stuck to its 2025 targets, forecasting a profit margin of between five and seven per cent for its vehicle sales, similar to the 6.3 per cent level recorded last year. Sign Up Sign Up BMW is the latest German auto titan to report poor earnings in recent days, with Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz also hammered by Trump's tariff onslaught and ongoing problems in China. Despite the poor results, BMW finance chief Walter Mertl insisted that the carmaker's 'business model remains intact'. 'Our footprint in the US is helping us limit the impact of tariffs,' he said. The Munich-based group has a factory in South Carolina. Nevertheless it continues to export around half of its cars destined for US customers to the United States, mainly from Europe and Mexico. Car imports into the United States have since April been subject to a 27.5 per cent tariff, although this will be reduced to 15 per cent from August after Trump and the European Union struck a trade deal. However this is far above the rate seen in the past. AFP

Who Was Wesley LePatner? Glamorous Blackstone Executive and Mom of Two Identified as One of the Victims of Midtown NYC Shooting

A Blackstone executive was among the four people shot and killed by the gunman who opened fire inside a Midtown office building, the company confirmed on Tuesday. Wesley LePatner, 43, a senior managing director at the investment firm, was shot dead by Shane Tamura, 27, at Blackstone's New York headquarters at 345 Park Avenue on Monday evening. LePatner was a married mother of two. Her husband, Evan, is employed at the private equity firm Courizon. The couple lived with their children in a $7 million apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Three other victims, including NYPD officer Didarul Islam, were killed after Tamura began shooting in the lobby. Mom's Tragic Death Wesley LePatner X "Words cannot express the devastation we feel. Wesley was a beloved member of the Blackstone family and will be sorely missed," the firm told Bloomberg in a statement. "She was brilliant, passionate, warm, generous, and deeply respected within our firm and beyond." LePatner joined Blackstone in 2014 and held the roles of global head of Core+ Real Estate and CEO of Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust, a property portfolio valued at $53 billion, according to Bloomberg. Shane Tamura X A Yale alumna, LePatner had spent over ten years at Goldman Sachs before joining Blackstone and held positions on several prominent New York City boards, including that of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Other Blackstone staff members are being treated in the hospital following the traumatic shooting, according to The Wall Street Journal. Details about the extent of their injuries have not yet been released. Authorities said that Tamura drove from his home in Las Vegas in a black BMW, passing through Colorado on July 26 and continuing through New Jersey before reaching Manhattan. Wesley LePatner with her husband and two children X Chilling surveillance footage later showed him entering the building—home to the NFL's headquarters—wearing a sport coat and a button-down shirt, while carrying a large assault rifle. He began shooting inside the lobby shortly before 6:30 p.m. Tamura was once a star high school football player, deeply passionate about the sport and seemingly headed for a future shaped by structure and teamwork. During his senior season, he earned six Player of the Game honors, racked up 126 carries for 616 rushing yards, and scored five touchdowns over nine games. Sick Motive In recent years, Tamura had a "documented history of mental health issues," NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated during a press briefing. Yet, he earned a private investigator's license and was legally granted a concealed carry permit through the Las Vegas Sheriff's Department. Shane Tamura seen walking inside a NYC office building with an assault rifle in his hand before opening fire and killing four people X The NFL's headquarters are located on the fifth floor of the building, but according to law enforcement, Tamura never went up to that level. However, an NFL employee was "seriously injured," as mentioned in an internal staff memo from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, obtained by CNN. Goodell said that the injured employee was rushed to the hospital, where fellow NFL staff members are currently supporting the employee's family. Shane Tamura was a former high school football player with a documented history of mental health struggles X Meanwhile, police in both New York City and Nevada are investigating Tamura's background, digging through his social media activity and searching his Las Vegas residence for clues that might reveal his motive. Authorities have already recovered a rifle case containing ammunition, a loaded revolver, extra magazines, a backpack, and prescription medication from his vehicle. Police believe Tamura acted alone in the broad daylight shooting. However, investigators are still working to determine whether anyone helped him in planning the attack or helped facilitate his travel across state lines and entry into the highly secured office tower, which was locked down while armed officers swept the building.
