Jalur Gemilang: Avoid being vigilantes, leave it to the authorities, says Fahmi
All matters involving investigations, prosecutions and court decisions must be left entirely to the authorities, Fahmi said following a reminder issued by the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) on Friday (Aug 15).
"Don't act as the police, lawyers and judge (as) it's wrong, leave it to the police to investigate, leave it to the AGC to prosecute and leave it to the courts to make a decision,' he said after the launch of the Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya level National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang Flag 2025 campaign at the Institut Pendidikan Guru (IPG) Kampus Bahasa Melayu here on Saturday (Aug 16).
Communications Ministry deputy secretary-general (strategic communications and creative industry) Nik Kamaruzaman Nik Husin; Information Department director-general Julina Johan and IPG Kampus Bahasa Melayu director Dr Masitah Mohammad Yusof also attended the launch.
He said he was given to understand that there were individuals called up by the police after a rally that was held to 'teach' certain parties, but further action will be left to the authorities.
Fahmi also invited Malaysians to play their part in resolving any issues related to the Jalur Gemilang without resorting to any provocation.
"As Malaysians, we can also play our part. If we see a Jalur Gemilang that has fallen, we should raise it back up. If it has faded, we replace it with a new one. If it's improperly flown, we correct it with our own hands.
"Let's not sneer, curse, or act in an uncivilised manner as we need to show our patriotic spirit during the national month and at the same time, we need to remind one another,' he said.
About the programme launched today, Fahmi said that it included the Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya level Merdeka Jalur Gemilang Convoy, involving 73 vehicles from the Communications Ministry's departments and agencies, the police, the Fire and Rescue Department, the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN), the National Security Council (MKN), Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), Suzuki V-Strom Malaysia motorsports club; the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) and the Lembah Pantai Madani Community.
Other side events for the programme include the Safe Internet campaign aimed at creating awareness about ethical Internet use and practices among teacher training institute students.
Jalur Gemilang kits were also handed to IPG senior management and representatives of 12 Madani Communities in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya in conjunction with the '1 House 1 Jalur Gemilang' initiative.- Bernama

'Do not take action on behalf of the police; the police will investigate. Do not take action on behalf of the Attorney General's Chambers; the Attorney General will prosecute. On Friday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stressed that there would be no more warnings or reprimands; instead, strict action would be taken against anyone who incites ethnic, religious, and cultural tensions in the country. Anwar said that the growing harmful elements, from the issue of the death of 13-year-old student, Zara Qairina Mahathir, allegedly due to bullying, and most recently the upside-down display of Jalur Gemilang, must be stopped immediately. Meanwhile, Fahmi said that relevant parties must not take the law into their own hands, urging them to trust the authorities to carry out their duties. 'The message I want to convey is that during this National Month, fly the Jalur Gemilang proudly and without fear, to remind ourselves, our families and our communities that Malaysia belongs to all of us,' he said. When asked by reporters on calls by some parties to boycott National Day celebrations if Zara Qairina's case remains unsolved, Fahmi said it should not happen because the celebrations are national events, encouraging everyone to celebrate. 'I, too, want justice for Zara; we don't want bullying to become an ongoing issue. The law is already in place, and action is being taken by Bukit Aman, which has taken over the investigation into the Zara Qairina case. Justice for Zara Qairina must not be tied to boycotting Merdeka, says Fahmi
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 — Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil today urged Malaysians not to boycott Merdeka celebrations over the death of schoolgirl Zara Qairina Mahathir. He stressed that the case is already being investigated by police and an inquest has been requested, BH Online reported this afternoon. 'Merdeka is a national event and I encourage us to celebrate it. I too want justice for Zara, I too want justice for Faris, and I too want justice for Syamsul,' he was quoted as saying at a cultural programme in Pantai Dalam today. The death of 13-year-old Zara, a SMKA Tun Mustapha student in Papar, Sabah, after an alleged bullying incident has sparked public outrage nationwide and renewed calls for safer schools. Police in Bukit Aman have since taken over the case. The two other names mentioned by Fahmi refer to a tahfiz student Wan Ahmad Faris Wan Abdul Rahman who was found dead in the school toilet in Kok Lanas, Kelantan 12 years ago. Syamsul Haris Shamsudin was a Universiti Teknologi Malaysia student who died during basic army training as a cadet in the Reserve Officers Training Unit (Palapes) in Ulu Tiram, Johor, on July 28. 'We don't want bullying to become something that drags on. The laws are there, action is being taken with Bukit Aman now leading the investigation into Zara Qairina's case,' Fahmi was qoted as saying. Her inquest is scheduled to start in Kota Kinabalu tomorrow, her family lawyers Hamid Ismail and Shahlan Jufri confirmed today. Fahmi stressed that justice takes time, pointing to the case of Bella, a young girl with Down Syndrome, as an example. 'We know the process of justice does take time. In Bella's case, it took a while but in the end we saw justice being served. I believe we will also get justice here,' he said. Fahmi also cautioned against using tragedies for political gain. 'Let us not build castles over a grave. Let us not use this to popularise ourselves. What we want is justice,' he was quoted as saying.
