Only 1 in 3 can work out which hat contains the cat in baffling brainteaser
Discover whether you have the mind of a modern-day genius with this impossibly challenging brainteaser that most people fail. Solving puzzles and riddles might seem like nothing more than a boredom buster, but they're actually a great form of mental exercise. In fact, some studies have even found that solving brainteasers like this one can improve your concentration levels and attention span, by positively impacting the central nervous system.
So while it won't turn you into a rocket scientist or get you into Oxford University, it's still worth attempting. However, this particular brainteaser isn't for the average Joe - and you'll need a sky-high IQ to crack it. So, let's dive straight in...
The image above shows three red hats, each containing a black cat. As previously reported, this puzzle first made its appearance on the YouTube channel 'Mend Your Decisions', and comes with three statements - along with the following advice: "Exactly one of the statements is true. Exactly one hat contains a cat."
Hat 1: The cat is in this hat.
Hat 2: The cat is not in this hat.
Hat 3: The cat is not in hat 1.
Feeling a little lost already? That's understandable, as only one in three Brits will actually be able to solve this. So, which of the hats contains the cat? The possible answers are:
Hat 1.
Hat 2.
Hat 3.
None of them.
Not enough information.
You must initially consider the possibility of the cat being in all the hats. Following that, you need to determine which of the earlier statements is accurate and which two are incorrect. Once you're done, you can check your answer at the bottom of the article.
If that baffling brainteaser was no match for a smarty pants like yourself, check out this even harder puzzle created by the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ). You'll need to be as smart as a spy to crack this one, and only have 20 seconds to do so.
So, put your 007 thinking cap on and work out the hidden word amongst the below. Once you're done, you can check your answer here.
Madison
Saturn
Do
Nitrogen
Exodus
ANSWER: By process of elimination, let's say the cat is in hat 1. This implies that the first two statements are true, while the third is false - which means the cat can't be in hat one.
Moving onto the second hat, if this is where the animal is then the first two statements are false, but the third is true by process of elimination. This implies that only one statement is accurate: the cat is in the second hat, which indeed turns out to be the solution.

How to throw the ultimate summer BBQ or picnic with kids at home - without breaking the bank
Entertaining guru Matilda Bea - who has more than 500,000 followers across Instagram and TikTok - shares her top 10 tips and reveals how to keep kids happy and parents sane all summer long With the school holidays in full swing and costs soaring, many families are skipping pricey outings and choosing to host garden BBQs and local park picnics instead. And according to entertaining expert Matilda Bea, that doesn't mean sacrificing fun or breaking the bank. According to a new survey, parents spend more than £100 extra per week over the summer holidays. But for those placing their children in clubs or camps, this rises to a staggering £385 per week, according to the Utility Warehouse survey that quizzed 1,000 parents of five to 15-year-old children. But having fun with the kids doesn't have to cost a fortune. Here, Matilda shares her top tips with the Mirror for summer BBQs and picnics that look and feel fabulous without breaking the bank. 1. Set the scene Matilda says lighting and tableware make all the difference. "String up fairy lights, use solar lanterns or pop candles in hurricane jars. The glow as the sun goes down transforms the space." Her favourite budget-friendly finds is the £20 Habitat Large Hurricane with Wooden Legs and the £15 Solar Filament Bulb Lantern to "create an instant good vibe". 2. Get inspired by TikTok BBQ season has gone viral once again on TikTok as Brits hope for another heatwave comeback this summer. "Whether you're taking full reign of the grill or curating the most epic spread of sides, it's all about teamwork, fun, and delicious food," Matilda says. "Sharing plates are a staple for making your BBQ or picnic look more curated - and it requires minimal effort." 3. Bring the indoors out Indoor/outdoor living can be a lifesaver for parents this summer, with bringing toys outside helping to keep the kids entertained while you are hosting. Layer up tablecloths, bring out proper cutlery and colourful dishes. "I hosted a garden party recently with 12 friends - tablecloths laid widthways and clashing napkins made it feel so joyful." Don't be afraid of colour. "Bold tones and mixed glassware add so much life to the table." 4. Pick a theme Not everything has to match, but a visual thread helps. "Lemons and blue for an Amalfi vibe, terracotta and wildflowers for Spanish summer." And for those wanting a money saving trick, Matilda suggests naming it "BYOB - bring your own buns!" 5. Plan for the British weather "Umbrellas, parasols, or even a chic throw-over pergola mean your party won't be a washout," she says. "And honestly, a little drizzle never hurt anyone when the spritzes are flowing and the playlists on point." 6. Create a Signature Station Matilda loves a station setup - drinks bars, condiments corners, even DIY sandwich or taco tables. And for the kids, these can be lifesavers if you set up a station just for them filled with their favourite snacks and drinks. "A drinks cart with elderflower spritzes or mocktails is such a moment. Or go full retro with a cordial and soda bar," she adds. "You can easily adapt this into a DIY ice cream bar, s'mores tray, or even a condiment corner with Sainsbury's Spicy Truffle Aioli - my favourite!" 7. Get ahead on prep 'Do what you can the night before - marinate skewers, chop salads, chill drinks. Then you're free to enjoy the day.' For shortcuts on a budget, Matilda swears by Sainsbury's summer range: 'The Coffee & Mascarpone Tart is a no-brainer for dessert.' 8. Seating is everything Low picnic rugs, poufs and fold-up chairs create a casual but stylish setup. "If you're heading to a local park, plenty of brands now offer beautiful foldable chairs and patterned rugs - they instantly elevate the setup and make it feel more curated." 9. Tableware Tableware doesn't have to cost a fortune and can be as simple as picking up some cheap, colourful tablecloths to throw over your old patio set. "A mix of vintage glasses or bold napkins can really bring the table to life," Matilda says. "Think clashing in the best way." 10. Tie it into summer sports With the Lionesses picking up a big win this weekend, it's the perfect time to plan ahead of more summer sports this season. "From F1 Sundays to the Euros or the Olympics, sport can be a great backdrop to your gathering," Matilda says. "Having it playing in the background gives everyone a natural talking point and keeps the energy upbeat, even during the mid-afternoon lull." Bonus tips for budget picnicking with the kids Freeze juice cartons for ice-cold drinks on the go Bring bubble wands or chalk for easy, mess-free park fun Use reusable plates and napkins to save money and waste Keep meals simple and sharable: pasta salads, wraps, cut fruit, and crisps always go down well Have kids help with the setup - it gives them a sense of pride and keeps them busy

Popular websites that you may not expect now have ID checks. But how does the check work? The way Brits surf the internet has undergone a seismic shift as the Online Safety Act comes into force. Web users now face having to prove their age when visiting sites with adult content. First passed into law back in 2023, the bill started to take effect on Friday (July 25) and has already caused some huge changes. Prompts to pass an age-check have been introduced - and not only on major pornography websites. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Popular apps and sites have started to enforce the regulations, including some you may not have expected. Here's all you need to know: Which websites require age verification now? Reddit has introduced age-checks under the Online Safety Act's new rules | TIMOTHY A. CLARY/AFP via Getty Images If you live in the UK, you may have noticed from Friday (July 25) that websites and apps you frequent might have started asking you to prove your age. New rules from the Online Safety Act have come into force, and it includes requiring ID verification for websites that contain pornography or other harmful content. However, while you may have anticipated the age checks being introduced on big-name porn sites, there are other popular websites or apps affected that might have caught you by surprise. Here are some of the sites that have introduced the new rules: Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad X (formerly Twitter) Reddit Discord Bluesky Grindr Pornhub - and other pornography websites BBC News reports that age verification checks on Reddit have been introduced across a wide range of subreddits - such as ones involving alcohol, as well as those dedicated to NSFW content. Technology Secretary Peter Kyle told BBC Newsbeat: 'We're very used to proving our age in lots of different areas of life at the moment, and it makes sense that we do so more assertively when it comes to online activity. "I think people actually think it's pretty weird that you are age checked when you want to buy a can of Monster, but you're not age checked when you access certain material online." Speaking to the Beeb, Reed Amber Thomas-Litman, a sex worker and educator, warned that the age checks could negatively impact people who don't feel confident sharing their identity, such as those in the LGBTQ+ community. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad She explained: 'If you have to hand over your ID, that means you have no protection for where that information is going. It could go to third-party companies, and who knows what they'll do with that information." How does age verification work? Ahead of the introduction of the new rules, under the Online Safety Act, last week Ofcom explained how the system would work. The regulator explains: 'When you visit a site or app that allows pornography, you shouldn't be able to see this content before you're asked to confirm your age. 'To make the experience more accessible and transparent, you should be able to read a statement setting out the kinds of age checks that you can use, and how they work.' Internet users in the UK can use the following methods to prove their age, Ofcom has said. For example, you upload an image of a document that shows your face and age, and an image of yourself at the same time – these are compared to confirm if the document is yours. The exact method of age-checking may vary depending on the website or app. Reddit, for example, uses the Persona service, The Verge reports . Savvy internet users have already found ways around the checks, including using images of actor Norman Reedus from the video game Death Stranding - instead of their own faces. Demand for VPNs is also said to have 'skyrocketed' as it allows people to circumvent the rules by making it appear that they are using the internet outside the UK. In a bid to assuage concerns about privacy and security of information, Ofcom said: 'Strong age checks can be done effectively, safely, and in a way that protects your privacy. As with everything you do online, you should exercise a degree of caution and judgment when giving over personal information. 'Data protection in the UK is regulated and enforced by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). Age checks to access online pornography are just the same. 'It will help stop children from encountering pornography online, in the same way that a child should not be able to simply walk into a shop and buy a pornographic DVD or magazine.' Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THE husband of YouTuber and animal rescue enthusiast Mikayla Raines struggled to hold back tears as he shared a montage of unseen moments featuring his late wife. Mikayla, the founder of SaveFox Rescue, died by suicide last month at the age of 29. 4 Mikayla Raines husband, Ethan, thanked fans for their well-wishes following his wife's death Credit: Instagram 4 Mikayla, 29, died by suicide Credit: Instagram She died in Faribault, Minnesota, on June 20 and left behind devastated husband Ethan, and their daughter, Freya. In a YouTube video uploaded July 27, Ethan thanked fans for their support in what he described as the 'hardest time' for everyone at the animal rescue organization. The video was also shared on the SaveaFox Rescue Instagram page, with the caption describing Mikayla as someone who was "purely glowing and one in a trillion." "I hope you can enjoy seeing Mikayla in some of these candid clips. She truly was a radiant positive energy," her family's post said. "A pure glowing individual; one in a trillion. A piece of me that I'll never get back." Ethan's voice cracked and he struggled to hold back tears as he thanked people for their letters and flowers following Mikayla's death. 'I know that you all saw her as a hero to the animals but she was a lot more than that,' he said. 'She wasn't just an animal rescuer, she was an advocate and an educator and a daughter and a sister and a mother - a mother not just to Freya but she was a surrogate as well. 'She was an artist and she was a really great singer and she was a lot of things that most people didn't get to see.' Through tears, Ethan said the memorial montage was 'hard to watch,' but said it's worth watching. YouTube fox rescue star Mikayla Raines dies by suicide aged 29 as tearful husband Ethan blasts online bullying campaign In the 20-minute montage, Mikayla was seen stroking tortoises and beaming at home. The clip featured snapshots from Christmas celebrations and days at the theme park. In one clip, Mikayla was seen balancing on the back of the horse with her arms raised as it galloped in an open field. The montage also featured tender moments Mikayla spent with her daughter in the park and gym. Footage captured Mikayla feeding animals and cuddling foxes. Ethan said he will never recover from Mikayla's death. 'But, I'm so glad we all were gifted these many years with her,' he wrote online. Ethan previously spoke about how he felt broken after his wife's death. He compared it to a loss that was 'unimaginable' and described Mikayla as 'the most amazing and inspiring individual.' She was an artist and she was a really great singer and she was a lot of things that most people didn't get to see Mikayla Raines' husband Ethan spent 15 minutes trying to revive Mikayla before paramedics arrived on the scene. He said Freya was left 'heartbroken' by her mom's death. Ethan recalled how his wife had been subject to internet trolls before her death and spoke about the impact it had. "[Mikayla] felt as if the entire world had turned against her,' he said. Mikayla's passion for wildlife stemmed from a young age. On her website, she revealed her mother was a rehabilitator, and she raised her first baby fox at 15. She studied in a veterinary technician program while at college. A local media report from 2016 described Mikayla as a "fox whisperer." "I think I can kind of relate to them: They're shy in crowds, it takes them awhile to get used to strangers,' she told The St. Paul Pioneer Press. But, she founded the SaveaFox rescue center in 2017 and revealed that the organization had saved around 150 foxes from death. The SaveaFox YouTube page has almost 2.5 million subscribers. 4 A tender moment captured Mikayla stroking a fox while another was on her shoulders Credit: YouTube 4 She was an avid wildlife enthusiast Credit: Instagram / @saveafox_rescue If you or someone you know is affected by any of the issues raised in this story, call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988, chat on or text Crisis Text Line at 741741.
