PMA punishes 4 cadets but says incident not 'hazing'
In a television interview, PMA public information office's Lieutenant Jesse Saludo said the cadets faced punishments based on the degree of their participation in the incident.
'The involved cadets were given appropriate punishments depending on the degree of their participation,' Saludo said in a report of Marisol Abdurahman on GMA Integrated News' Unang Balita on Monday.
'The PMA has a strict, zero tolerance on maltreatment and hazing, and such acts have no place in the institution,' he added.
However, contrary to the complaint of the victim, Saludo said the incident does not fall under the definition of hazing in the Anti-Hazing Act.
'The injuries were caused by their classmates venting out their frustration on their squadmate, which because they believe the performance of their classmate is affecting their squad,' Saludo said.
'The incident does not fall under the legal definition of hazing as stated in the Anti-Hazing Act, which requires acts of violence or abuse to be committed as part of the admission process in the organization,' he added.
Based on its investigation, the Baguio City Police said the victim, a 4th class cadet, allegedly experienced 'physical abuse and humiliation' from September 2 to 29, 2024.
The police noted that the 'acts of maltreatment were not isolated but were carried out regularly inside the barracks.'
These alleged physical abuses, which the complainant noted as 'animalistic tripping,' include punches and excessive physical training, which caused him to collapse due to exhaustion.
After allegedly receiving a heavy punch on September 29, 2024, the victim nearly lost consciousness and was admitted to a hospital in Quezon City, where he underwent medical and psychological treatment.
He was then transferred to the PMA Station Hospital and was discharged on June 30 this year. — Joviland Rita/RSJ, GMA Integrated News

Senator Francis 'Kiko' Pangilinan on Wednesday disclosed the names of five consignees of shipments suspected to contain smuggled agricultural products. During the hearing of the Senate committee on agriculture, food, and agrarian reform, the senator then directed the Senate committee secretary to invite the brokers and company representatives to the next hearings of the committee scheduled on August 27 and September 1. TNVS driver booked in Taytay, stabbed, hit on the head in Pampanga
A driver of a transport network vehicle service (TNVS) was stabbed, pointed with a gun, and hit on the head by the two passengers who booked his service. According to the report of GMA Regional TV's CJ Torida in '24 Oras' on Wednesday, the victim is a resident of Makati City and was booked by the suspects at Taytay, Rizal going to Pampanga on Tuesday. The victim also informed his partner about his booking. 'Nag-chat naman po 'yung mismong sasakay na 'Okay po, mag-aayos lang po kami ng gamit then pababa na po kami',' said Naureen Rambacal, the victim's partner. (The passengers themselves chatted, 'Okay, we'll just get our things ready, then we'll head down.'") Before arriving at Macabebe in Pampanga, they passed through various towns in the province until they reached Barangay Consuelo, where the incident happened. 'May mga nakitang mga tao, isinadsad niya sa may gilid. So nakuha niya 'yung atensyon. Doon na 'yung nagkagulo na,' said Macabebe Police Station chief Police Major Reginal Turla. (When he saw people, he drove the car onto the side. He got their attention. That's when the commotion started.) After the driver hit his vehicle on the side, people nearby immediately asked for help. The suspects tried to escape but they were apprehended by the residents and barangay officials. 'Noong rumesponde kami, may nakita kaming sasakyan na red. Doon una naming nakita 'yung tao na duguan tapos 'yung dalawang naglalakad, nagtago sa mga damo-damo doon sa amin,' said Barangay Consuelo kagawad Jay Guevarra. (When we responded, we saw a red car. Authorities recovered from the suspects a replica of a pistol, a hand grenade, a cell phone, and a sling bag containing various IDs.
