CPF gets a boost to fight crime

The Citizen4 days ago

THREE entities have come together to fight crime in Pinetown. On Saturday, May 10, the Pinetown CPF, Blue Security and Tracker SA launched their partnership vehicles that will help fight the increasing rate of hijacking in the Pinetown precinct.
CPF chairman Justin Bosse said last year the provincial government donated vehicles to all the CPFs.
'Well, a lot of them. We were told that we must use the vehicles to attend to meetings and assist with community support. Maintenance would obviously be at our cost,' explained Bosse.
'Although the provincial government does give us a small amount of petrol allowance every month, we have had to seek sponsorship and Blue Security came on board. They informed us that they would be willing to sponsor a petrol allowance every month towards the vehicle and we would put their branding on the vehicle as well. It then got a little bit bigger. We became very active in the community.'
From there, the CPF approached Tracker as they are affiliated with the SAPS. 'Tracker also agreed to come on board. This is first in the country for corporate companies to join forces with the CPF.'
Bosse revealed that a tracker has been installed in the vehicles which will help track stolen and hijacked motor vehicles.
Edsandis Munusamy from Tracker SA said this initiative marks a significant step forward in community-centred crime prevention, aligning with Tracker's value – Caring for people and their things.
As part of the partnership, Munusamy said CPF members received specialised training on vehicle tracking technology (VTT), equipping them with essential knowledge to support law enforcement in the fight against vehicle crime in the Pinetown precinct.

'This training enhances their ability to act swiftly and in co-ordination with law enforcement agencies during recoveries and vehicle-related investigations. We see this as more than just a partnership. It's a long-term investment in the safety of our communities,' said Munusamy.
Blue Security community manager Brett Beket said community safety is at the heart of everything they do.
'This joint initiative aligns perfectly with our mission to build safer communities where families can thrive. Collaborating with both formal and informal groups, such as the Pinetown CPF, is integral to our operations.
'As industry leaders in community safety, we have a dedicated team focused solely on this mission. We are proud to support the Pinetown CPF and encourage other organisations to get involved and help make a positive impact.'
Pinetown CPF deputy chairperson Lynn Robson said New Germany, Kloof, Wyebank, Pinetown South, Motala Heights, Nazareth and Pinetown Central make up the Pinetown CPF sub forums and they take pride in protecting their communities.
'This could not have been achieved without forging and nurturing strong relationships with our partners in crime and we look forward to strengthening these with this new partnership with Blue Security and Tracker.'
Robson also thanked the Department of Community Safety Liaison for their continued support and guidance.
Welcoming this partnership was also Pinetown SAPS station commander, Brigadier Leon Matthysen, who emphasised that the multifaceted collaboration between SAPS, Tracker SA, Blue Security, and the CPF demonstrates the commitment to tackling crime head-on.
'This joint effort sends a strong message that we mean business in bringing crime down. Specifically, on carjacking, the Tracker-fitted vehicle will significantly enhance our ability to track and recover stolen vehicles, increasing the chances of apprehending perpetrators.
'With increased visible policing and a united approach, we're confident that this partnership will yield tangible results in reducing crime and keeping our communities safe,' said the station commander.

Community remembers Brigadier Leon Matthysen: A dedicated Durban policeman

Durban policeman Brigadier Leon Matthysen passed away from a heart attack on Wednesday. Image: Supplied Tributes continue to pour in for Durban policeman Brigadier Leon Matthysen, who passed away from a heart attack on Wednesday, sending shockwaves through the community. Matthysen was the station commander and head of crime prevention at several police stations in KwaZulu-Natal during his career. In 2023, he was appointed as the station commander of Pinetown SAPS. On Thursday, the community, Community Policing Forums (CPF), and Private security companies held a memorial drive from Kloof to Pinetown police station in memory of Matthysen. Andreas Mathios of Marshall Security said people came out in their numbers, which was a testament to the deep respect and admiration 'we held in our hearts' for Matthysen. 'He was the ultimate example of South Africa's finest, a true top cop whose integrity, courage, and unwavering commitment to justice set him apart. He did not just wear the uniform, he honoured it, and in doing so, earned the trust and respect of the community he served,' Mathios said. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Aidan David, the chairperson of eThekwini District Police Board and Provincial Board treasurer, spoke of the memories he had of Matthysen, including the support he showed to the CPFs. David said wherever Matthysen's career had taken him, he always touched the lives of people and made them feel safe. According to him, Matthysen always supported the CPFs and believed that crime cannot be solved without the input from the community. David said that Matthysen left an indelible mark as one of the best station commanders that Isipingo SAPS has ever had, adding that he was an officer who never liked to be office-bound. 'He used to always sit at the back of the SAPS kombi with the door open, and he would make the young officers like Constable Donald Naidoo drive through the CBD of Isipingo and do patrols. Before the van could stop, if he saw a suspect breaking the law, he would spring out of that moving van and pounce on the suspects, and before they knew what happened, they would be apprehended by Brigadier Matthysen,' David recalled. David said that for the police officers patrolling with Matthysen, it was like an action scene from a movie. 'This kind of dedication and guts kept the people of Isipingo safe, and he really cleaned up our town of Isipingo and left us to take office with his promotion elsewhere,' David said. Aiden Langenhoven, who is alleged to be one of the boys known to steal from delivery trucks in the area, died on Wednesday after yet another delivery jacking. Delft Community Policing Forum (CPF) public relations officer, Francois de Bruin, confirmed the incident that took place at Voorbrug and Delft Main Road at the 7/11 circle. 'Langenhoven attended Roosendal High in Delft and it is believed that there was attempts to take cool drinks off a delivery truck as was and still is unfortunately the case at these hotspots in Delft Main Road, where these kids are being used to do the bidding of hardened criminals. 'Neighbourhood Watch, SAPS, the community and CPF are at our wits end and we concede its really a problem at these hotspots, however, CPF/SAPS want to salute the NHW who have identified the operating timeslots when these boys operate. 'As precautionary measures we ask motorists to try not to have valuables of any kind in open bakkies where possible.' Video Player is loading. Johannesburg court sentences cop killers to multiple life terms

The High Court in Johannesburg sentenced two men to multiple life terms for the murder of two police officers and a CPF member in Boksburg. Image: File The High Court in Johannesburg has handed down multiple life sentences to two men who brutally murdered police officers and a community policing forum member in what the National Prosecuting Authority described as a targeted attack on the state. Njiki Hlulani Mabuza, 31, and Savenore Sihle Ntuli, 29, were sentenced on Monday to three life sentences each for the murders of Sergeant Phillip Kgotso Malahlela, Constable Vusimusi Innocent Batsha, and CPF member Tommy Masuku. The court also handed down an additional 59 years for related crimes, including attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of unlicensed firearms, and ammunition. "The killing of law enforcement officers is not only a heinous crime but also a direct assault on the rule of law, public safety, and the fabric of our democracy," said National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Regional Spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane. "The killing of law enforcement officers is not only a heinous crime but also a direct assault on the rule of law, public safety, and the fabric of our democracy," said National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Regional Spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane. The convictions stem from a series of violent events between July and October 2022. Investigations revealed that the accused were behind the murder of Masuku, a CPF member ambushed and shot in an informal settlement after being accused of cooperating with the police. Four months later, they executed a deadly ambush on police officers retrieving a body in Boksburg. "Such acts threaten the security of all South Africans and undermine efforts to maintain law and order," Mjonondwane said. During the second attack, one officer was gunned down in a bathroom, and another was shot outside the scene. The girlfriend of the deceased civilian was also caught in the crossfire, sustaining two gunshot wounds and suffering permanent abdominal injuries. The suspects also stole service firearms from the fallen officers. "Through diligent prosecution and unwavering commitment, the NPA continues to affirm that attacks on the state and its institutions will be met with the full might of the law," Mjonondwane stated. The court agreed, citing the devastating impact of the crimes on the victims, their families, and the country's law enforcement fraternity. The NPA welcomed the ruling as a firm statement against the murder of officers and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the integrity of South Africa's justice system. "The NPA remains resolute in its mandate to hold perpetrators accountable and ensure that justice is served, especially in cases where those tasked with protecting our communities become targets themselves," Mjonondwane concluded.
