UAE ranks 1st globally in Global Entrepreneurship Monitor report for 4th year

ABU DHABI (WAM) The United Arab Emirates has ranked first globally for the fourth consecutive year in the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) Report 2024/2025.The report also ranked the UAE as the best place for entrepreneurship and small and medium-sized enterprises among 56 economies assessed this year.The UAE secured the top position among high-income countries in 11 out of 13 key indicators based on expert assessments of institutional frameworks supporting the entrepreneurial environment.The areas in which the UAE excelled globally included: entrepreneurial finance, ease of access to funding, government policies supporting entrepreneurship, government policies on taxes and bureaucracy, government entrepreneurship programmes, entrepreneurship education at school level and post-school level, research and development transfer, commercial and professional infrastructure, ease of market entry in terms of regulatory burdens, and social and cultural norms related to entrepreneurship.Minister of State for Entrepreneurship, Alia bint Abdullah Al Mazrouei, said the achievement reflects the results of the UAE's forward-looking vision, supported by the guidance of its wise leadership, to build an integrated entrepreneurship and SME ecosystem.She added that the UAE's continued recognition as the top environment for entrepreneurship and the leading destination for startups globally for the fourth year in a row represents the country's regional and international progress.She noted that this accomplishment demonstrates the UAE's commitment to providing an attractive and impactful entrepreneurship climate aligned with global best practices, enabling startups to grow in advanced and digital economic sectors, and offering financing initiatives and solutions that support the country's positioning as a global hub for the new economy by the next decade, in line with the objectives of the "We the UAE 2031" vision.The report highlighted that the UAE's entrepreneurial environment continues to flourish and advance globally, supported by business-friendly policies, distinguished government initiatives and a competitive investment climate. One of the key contributing factors to this success was the UAE's investment of $8.7 billion to boost innovation and the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises as part of the Projects of the 50 initiative.The report also cited the allowance of 100 percent foreign ownership of companies and the consistent increase in foreign direct investment, which reached record levels in 2023.It further pointed out that the entrepreneurial culture in the UAE is marked by high awareness and ambition among the population. Approximately 67 percent of adults know an entrepreneur or believe they have the necessary skills to start a business.Meanwhile, 70 percent of Emiratis see strong opportunities to launch a business locally, 78 percent of new entrepreneurs prioritise social and environmental impact over profit, and 75 percent of early-stage entrepreneurs plan to expand their teams and employ at least six people in the next five years.Furthermore, 80 percent intend to integrate digital technology into their business operations, 78 percent are motivated to generate high income or wealth, and 55 percent of entrepreneurs serve customers outside the UAE, strengthening the country's position as a global centre for business and investment.The UAE was also ranked first globally in the same report under the GEM's National Entrepreneurship Context Index (NECI), which assesses each country's supportive environment for entrepreneurship based on scores derived from national experts' evaluations.
This supports the UAE's vision to reach one million SMEs by 2031.

The resolution seeks to align higher education outcomes with labour market needs and ensure the quality and effectiveness of such training new decision introduces an integrated governance system that aligns practical training with national development priorities, enhancing transparency, accountability and the quality of higher Mohammed Al Mualla, Undersecretary of MoHESR, noted that the decision highlights the Ministry's commitment to advancing practical training, ensuring graduates gain skills aligned with key economic said, 'Practical training bridges theory and real-world experience, equipping students with the skills needed to succeed and innovate in the workforce. The resolution provides clear governance frameworks, ensuring the programmes offer structured, hands-on training that prepares students for the future.'Dr. Al Mualla added, 'The new framework bolsters collaboration between HEIs and training providers in the public and private sectors, ensuring high-quality, safe and engaging training under experienced supervision. It establishes effective oversight to guarantee meaningful outcomes, preparing graduates with the knowledge and practical skills they need to contribute to driving the country's sustainable development.'The decision establishes clear obligations for HEIs to enhance the governance of practical training. It emphasises cooperation with training providers to ensure that programs meet students' needs and institutional goals, guarantees safe and suitable training environments, and requires supervisors - both at institutions and training providers' premises - to be qualified, experienced, and capable of effectively assessing student the resolution requires HEIs to develop clear training plans, formalise agreements with training providers and monitor student performance through interim and final assessments as well as field visits. Relevant entities must also maintain comprehensive records, submit detailed reports and implement robust oversight mechanisms for practical training programmes. The decision supports the UAE's vision of a competitive, innovation-driven, knowledge-based economy, aligning with global best practices in higher education. It seeks to prepare graduates to excel professionally, lead across sectors, contribute to a sustainable future for the UAE and compete regionally and internationally.

UAE gold reserve surges 25.9% in first five months of 2025 to $7.88bn

UAE's gold reserves increased by nearly 25.9 per cent during the first five months of the year. The Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates (CBUAE) said the value of gold held by the country increased to AED 28.933 billion (US$7.88 billion) at the end of May, up from AED 22.981 billion (US$6.26 billion) at the end of December 2024. According to the Central Bank's statistical bulletin issued on Thursday, the CBUAE's gold holdings rose by 0.49 per cent month-on-month in May. Demand deposits also grew, exceeding AED 1.166 trillion (US$320 billion) by the end of May, compared to AED 1.109 trillion (US$300 billion) at the end of December 2024. Of this total deposit, AED 892.577 billion (US$243.04 billion) were in local currency and AED 274.329 billion (US$74.7 billion) in foreign currencies. Savings deposits rose to AED 359.57 billion (US$97.91 billion) at the end of May, up from AED 317.48 billion (US$86.45 billion) at the end of last year. This included AED 305.508 billion (US$83.19 billion) in local currency and AED 54.062 billion (US$14.72 billion) in foreign currencies. Time deposits exceeded AED 1 trillion to AED 1.013 trillion (US$275.9 billion) for the first time by the end of May, including AED 614.854 billion (US$167.42 billion) in local currency and the rest in foreign currencies.
