Seven international airlines return to Iraq's airspace
This development reflects increasing international confidence in the navigation services provided by the company and its full commitment to International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, said Abbas Sabbar Al-Baydhani, Director General of the General Company for Air Navigation Services. He added that the return of these airlines indicates the rapidly evolving relationship between Iraq and global air transport companies.
Prominent international airlines that have returned to Iraqi airspace include German Cargo, Swiss Air, Lufthansa AirX, Qantas Airline, Giant Cargo, LOT Polish Airlines, and Wizz Air Abu Dhabi.
Al-Baydhani emphasized this growth reflects increasing trust in the competence of Iraqi air traffic controllers and the technical and operational capabilities of the company. The company continues to implement development and modernization plans for infrastructure and navigation equipment. Its goal is to provide top-tier services to airlines and strengthen Iraq's position as a crucial regional and international air corridor.
This achievement comes with direct support from Minister of Transport Razzaq Muhaibas Al-Saadawi, who has directed the enhancement of Iraq's navigational standing and the development of its technical services since assuming his duties. It also highlights the diligent efforts of the General Company for Air Navigation Services and Iraqi air traffic controllers to elevate performance and ensure the highest levels of safety and fluidity in air traffic management.

Iraq to launch cross-border rail linking Basra and Iran
Shafaq News – Baghdad Iraq's Ministry of Transport announced on Sunday the imminent launch of the Basra–Shalamcheh railway project, a 36-kilometer cross-border line aimed at easing pilgrim traffic and strengthening regional connectivity. Ministry spokesperson Maytham al-Safi told Shafaq News that preliminary work is underway, including demining, land clearance, and final administrative steps. A contract signing with the executing company is expected soon, with construction to follow. 'The railway will enable the movement of over five million Iraqi and Iranian visitors annually, especially during religious seasons,' al-Safi said. Currently, pilgrims arriving by train from Iran must transfer at the border to reach Basra and continue toward Karbala. The new link will close that gap, integrating with Iraq's internal lines, including the active Basra–Karbala and Basra–Baghdad corridors. Construction is expected to take 36 months. Last year, the ministry operated 17 trains during peak pilgrimage periods and is prepared to scale up this year based on demand. Al-Safi said the project is central to Iraq's plans to modernize its transport infrastructure and deepen regional ties. The government has earmarked $150M for the line, which also forms part of a broader initiative to connect major religious sites in Iraq and Iran.

Iraq's wheat production declines due to summer drought
Baghdad ( – The Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture confirmed on Sunday that the country's wheat production dropped drastically in 2025 due to the lack of rain. Iraq's deputy agriculture minister, Mahdi al-Jubouri, told Rudaw that this year's wheat production is estimated to be 5.12 million tons, compared to 5.4 million tons produced in 2024. Iraq is suffering from a deepening water shortage. According to the United Nations, the country is the fifth most vulnerable to climate change, with the consequences compounded by Turkey and Iran's construction of dams on rivers that flow into Iraq. The absence of formal agreements with the two countries, along with this year's drought, has exacerbated the issue. According to al-Jubouri, Iraq has maintained a consistent production of fruits and vegetables because these crops do not require a lot of water. The Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture declared in mid-July that it had achieved self-sufficiency in wheat for the third year in a row. The wheat produced from different Iraqi provinces, except the Kurdistan region of Iraq, reached four million tons so far, Shafaq News reported. During a celebration marking the accomplishment, Iraqi Minister of Agriculture Abbas Al-Maliki stated that this achievement is the result of ongoing government support and the ministry's plans, which include providing agricultural supplies, using modern irrigation techniques to address water scarcity, and providing improved seeds and fertilizers. Iraq was self-sufficient in wheat for three years before the crisis in Ukraine, producing 4.7 million tons in 2019, 6.2 million tons in 2020, and around 4.2 million tons in 2021. However, water scarcity and desertification limited local wheat production, forcing the Iraqi government to import wheat to fill the shortfall.

Dollar prices stabilize in Baghdad and Erbil at closure
Shafaq News – Baghdad/Erbil On Sunday, the exchange rates оf the US Dollar against the Iraqi dinar remained stable in Baghdad and Erbil markets at the closure. According to a survey by Shafaq News Agency, the dollar's rate in the central Al-Kifah and Al-Harithiya stock exchanges in Baghdad settled at 139,200 dinars for every 100 dollars, while they recorded 139,500 dinars on Saturday. The selling and buying rates at currency exchange stores in Baghdad were set at 140,250 IQD and 138,250 IQD per 100 USD, respectively. Erbil's selling price also settled at 138,950 dinars for every 100 dollars, and the buying price was 138,850.
