Australia beat New Zealand by eight wickets: first women's T20 international
5.35am CET 05:35
Australia star batter Beth Mooney has celebrated her milestone match in style by leading the side to a commanding eight-wicket triumph over the T20 world champions New Zealand at Eden Park on Friday.
The visitors were arguably below their best in the field as they gave up a strong start to allow New Zealand to edge towards a competitive total as Melie Kerr (51 not out) and Sophie Devine (39 no) guided the hosts to 137-2. But there was no denying Australia once openers Beth Mooney and Georgia Voll came to the crease.
The left-right combination blazed away for an unbroken 77 runs during the six overs of the powerplay and fired Australia to within 25 runs of their target by the halfway mark of the chase. Voll was dismissed soon after reaching her maiden T20 half-century with Australia only 15 runs short of their mark, but Mooney celebrated her 200th international by hitting the winning runs as she finished on 75 not out.
But Australia's win could have come at a huge cost with all-rounder Ash Gardner sent for scans on her right index finger after injuring it while attempting to catch a powerful Devine straight drive late in the White Ferns' innings.
New Zealand picked up a couple of late wickets when the win was already out of their reach but will have to significantly turn around their form and come with better bowling plans if they are to challenge Australia when the arch-rivals meet again on Sunday.

Australia pick an XI packed with all-round talent that comfortably bats as deep as Georgia Wareham at No 9, withy the leg-spinner preferred to Alana King in conditions expected to favour swing and seam. 2.03am CET 02:03 Preamble
Hello and welcome to live coverage of the first women's T20I between New Zealand and Australia.
The White Ferns arrive at Eden Park as the T20 world champions after their stunning form reversal last year ended with a historic win over South Africa in the final. Australia had claimed the T20 World Cup at the three previous tournaments before their shock defeat to South Africa in the semi-finals, and have been on a tear since then with 12 victories from as many completed matches across all formats.
Both sides are close to full strength though Australia are most crucially without captain Alyssa Healy for this three-match series as the star keeper-batter rehabilitates a foot injury. New Zealand have recalled Sophie Devine, who has given up the T20 captaincy since lifting the trophy last year, while Melie Kerr also returns after sitting out the white-ball matches against Sri Lanka and impressing in the WPL.
The conditions in Auckland are looking promising for a full 40 overs, with a predicted high of 24C and little cloud around.
First ball will be at 2.45pm local time or 12.45pm AEDT. I'll be back shortly with the toss and team news, but in the meantime keep me company with your thoughts and predictions on email or @martinpegan on Bluesky or X. Let's get into it! Australian Women's Cricket Team 🏏 (@AusWomenCricket)
Finishing the season with a stint across the ditch! 🏏

Louis Rees-Zammit on brink of signing for English giants
Louis Rees-Zammit on brink of signing for English giants The 24-year-old announced last month that he would be returning to rugby from the NFL Rees-Zammit is reportedly close to a return to club rugby (Image: Chris Fairweather/Huw Evans Agency) Bristol Bears are growing increasingly confident of signing Wales international Louis Rees-Zammit upon his return from the NFL. The 24-year-old announced at the end of July that he would be returning to rugby union, having spent the last 18 months trying to crack American Football. The former Gloucester wing is understood to be a target of the rebel R360 league, but he will need to find a contract in the short-term - with the new league, driven by former England World Cup winner Mike Tindall, not been guaranteed to get off the ground. Rees-Zammit's announcement that he would be returning to rugby sparked a scramble for his signature, with clubs in England and France interested in the 32-cap international. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby Newcastle, fresh from being backed by Red Bull, ruled themselves out of the running this week, while Cardiff have also been linked. Sources close to Rees-Zammit insist that all options remain on the table, but WalesOnline understands that Bristol are getting closer to landing the marquee signing ahead of the new Gallagher Prem season. Rees-Zammit is still currently in Florida, enjoying some time with family ahead of returning to the UK. Article continues below It's understood that he will push ahead with signing for a club upon his return. A move to Bristol makes sense on a number of levels. The Ashton Gate club have shown they can market high-profile stars, as was the case with American star Ilona Maher's stint with the women's side last season. When Rees-Zammit left rugby union in early 2024, he was one of the most recognisable names in the northern hemisphere - with his stock arguably still growing even away from the sport, given his attempts to make it in the NFL. Once Rees-Zammit's club future is sorted, he will get on with making his return to Test rugby. Wales have endured a downturn in form since Rees-Zammit's last cap at the 2023 Rugby World Cup. His last Test appearance against Argentina in Marseille marked the start of an 18-Test losing run for Wales. New Wales coach Steve Tandy has already opened the door for Rees-Zammit to return to the fold. 'I think you wouldn't rule anything out,' said Tandy last week. 'Zammo brings a big effect and excitement by coming back. 'I think it's great for the game. He's gone away to experience something new, which is class, and I'm sure he will be in outstanding physical condition. Article continues below 'The more players we have available to represent our country the better. That's exciting and makes our job easier. 'It will also make our calls on selection a lot more challenging in terms of selection as we've already got some very good back-three players. Adding Zammo into that makes it even more exciting for not only us, but the fans as well. Wales take on Argentina, Japan, New Zealand and South Africa in the autumn.

Jarrad Branthwaite injury: Everton suffer nightmare blow just days before season
Jarrad Branthwaite signed a new contract at Everton over the summer, but he will miss the opening few weeks of the new season after aggravating a hamstring injury Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite will miss the start of the season after suffering a hamstring injury days before his side's Premier League opener at Leeds. Centre-back Branthwaite, 23, was forced to limp out of training after suffering an injury to his right hamstring, the same area he injured in Everton's final game at Goodison Park against Southampton in May. The Mail report that Branthwaite could be sidelined until the end of September, causing him to miss the first six games of the new Premier League season - including a Merseyside derby at Anfield - as well as Everton's Carabao Cup second round tie at home to Mansfield. Branthwaite, who picked up his so far only England cap last year, is also likely to be forced out of contention for Thomas Tuchel's Three Lions squad next month, when they face Andorra and Serbia in World Cup qualifiers. Branthwaite had been attracting interest from several Premier League sides prior to signing a new contract at Everton this summer, and is seen as a key figure in David Moyes ' side ahead of their first season at their new Hill Dickinson Stadium. Fellow centre-back James Tarkowski underwent hamstring surgery earlier this summer and has been eased back into action over pre-season, with Jake O'Brien and Michael Keane also still on the books at the club. Moyes was already keen to add a new centre-back to his squad this summer prior to Branthwaite's injury, with the Scot still desperate for more faces to add to his squad after bringing in midfielders Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Jack Grealish. Speaking on the club's pre-season tour of the US, Moyes said: "We've got huge priorities as far as where we would like to try and buy the players if we could do. "But also, we've got a numbers situation as well, we're short in numbers, so there's a bit of both. We're trying to get the pieces we really want first, and that's what we've been fighting to do. So hopefully we can, hopefully things will fall into place. "But we're just beginning to think, my goodness, we're just not getting enough over the line. "Because we are actively working to try [and] it's not as if we're a club who are saying [that] we're waiting to sell a player before we can bring one in. But it's not really the situation. We've got money to spend, and we'll have to try and spend it wisely." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Steven Naismith returns to Scotland set-up as Steve Clarke's number two
The 38-year-old was previously first-team coach for the national team before being appointed Jambos boss in 2023. Naismith – out of football since being sacked by Hearts last September – has now been summoned back to the Scotland fold to become assistant coach after John Carver left to become manager of Lechia Gdansk. Clarke has also recruited Leicester set-piece coach Andrew Hughes to his backroom staff as a replacement for Austin MacPhee, who left the role last autumn. Steve Clarke has reinforced his backroom team ahead of our FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifiers ➕ Steven Naismith will return as assistant coach to replace John Carver and will be joined by Andrew Hughes, Leicester City's set-piece coach, who will perform the same role for Scotland. — Scotland National Team (@ScotlandNT) August 13, 2025 Both coaches will be in place for Scotland's World Cup qualifiers away to Denmark and Belarus next month. 'I am delighted to have Steven and Andrew with us for the World Cup qualifying campaign,' Clarke told the Scottish Football Association. 'Steven has been with us before and brings a real complementary skill set to myself and (first-team coach) Alan Irvine. 'He has had opportunities to return to full-time club football, so it says a lot for his pride in the national team that he has agreed to join up with us again. I was really impressed by a number of potential candidates we'd spoken to when John left to continue at Lechia Gdansk but the fact we've worked together before makes for a seamless transition. 'I am also really pleased to have Andrew with us. He has coached in a variety of roles since retiring from playing but has excelled as set-piece coach at Norwich City and now Leicester City and I am grateful to Marti Cifuentes for allowing Andrew to work with us during the international windows.' Naismith, who won 51 Scotland caps, has turned down other offers since leaving Hearts but is 'really excited' to be rejoining Clarke's staff. 'When I left Hearts, I made a point of not jumping straight back in at the first offer but to reflect on my coaching experiences and wait for something that really excited me,' the former Everton, Rangers and Norwich player said. 'When I first spoke to Steve about the possibility of coming back it was a no-brainer: I loved playing for my country, I've loved being part of the coaching team previously and I can't wait to help support the mission to take Scotland to a World Cup again.' Former Reading, Norwich and Leeds player Hughes, 47, said: 'From the moment I got the call from Steve I have felt extremely honoured to be invited to work with the Scotland men's national team. 'My father is Scottish and as well as this being a proud moment for me and my family, it is a hugely exciting time as a coach to be part of a World Cup qualifying campaign, with such a talented squad, following back-to-back Euro qualifications. I can't wait to get started.'
