Springboks fail to sell out Ellis Park
The iconic 62 000-seat venue will host the highly anticipated clash, but a number of tickets remained available across multiple sections as of Friday.
Prices for those tickets still available range from R1 050 to an eye-watering R4 000, according to the official Ticketmaster website.
When one considers a full month subscription to DStv to watch not only this match, but the second Test between the two sides next weekend in Cape Town, costs around the same as the cheapest ticket, one is perhaps not surprised to learn there will be empty seats in the stands.
Following those two matches, South Africans have only one other chance to see the Springboks live in Mzansi this year – against Argentina at Hollywoodbets Kings Park on 27 September.
Perhaps no surprise then either that Gayton McKenzie's Sports, Arts and Culture department was giving away 2 000 free tickets as recently as Thursday morning.
Speaking at Loftus Versfeld during the launch of Vodacom's new sponsorship deal with SA Rugby, Oberholzer said the event has already met its financial expectations.
'We've hit our targets in terms of budgeting for the event,' he said.
'When we did our forecasts, we worked on an 85% capacity. We're well over that, and after the United Rugby Championship, we'll review our programme and how we drove it.'
He acknowledged that lessons would be drawn from the current series and applied ahead of the 2026 season.
'If we've made any mistakes, we'll rectify them before the season starts next year,' Oberholzer added.
Saturday's match follows a trend of lower-than-expected ticket sales for the Springboks' recent July Test matches – including fixtures against Italy in Pretoria and Port Elizabeth and Georgia in Nelspruit – none of which reportedly reached capacity.
Despite this, SA Rugby remains optimistic, pointing to strong broadcast numbers and sustained interest in the national team, which remains a major commercial drawcard following their 2023 Rugby World Cup triumph.

CAPE TOWN - Flank Fraser McReight will captain Australia as they seek a second successive win against South Africa in their Rugby Championship match at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday. The Springboks have won just once at Eden Park — back in 1937 when Philip Nel's team secured a series win at the ground. Robertson, like his countryman Joe Schmidt, the Wallabies coach, said the scoreline was an exaggeration of the perceived Australian dominance. 'It was a game of a bounce of a ball and a pass and a couple of little moments,' Robertson said. 'South Africa played beautifully for a period of time, and then it just turned, didn't it? And it just shows, like I have said before, with discipline and accuracy, you can force errors, and things can change quickly.' Back in the late 1990s, Robertson and Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus opposed each other as openside flanks in a Tri-Nations game. They have had a mutual respect ever since. Robertson feels that the loss at Ellis Park will direct Erasmus back to the Springbok DNA that has served them so well. 'Does it change the way we're going to play the Boks? Look, we know how they're going to play. They're going to play to their strengths. They'll go back to them. That is my opinion, anyway. It's just their DNA. But it's about how you stop them, while also playing your own game.' The All Blacks beat Argentina last week and face them again on Saturday before the countdown to Eden Park begins. Wallabies coach says new captain ‘quiet' but leads by example

Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt backed the country's 91st Test captain as a man who leads by example, ahead of their second Rugby Championship match against the Springboks. The Australians take on the Springboks at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday (kick-off 5.10pm) after the visitors secured a surprising 38–22 win at the South Africans' Ellis Park fortress. Flanker Fraser McReight made the most tackles on the day (21) and won the joint most turnovers (two). These, at the breakdown just metres from the Australian try line, stalled the Springbok attack and diminished their confidence. He received the man of the match award, saying his team had to 'come back and show grit' after facing a 22–5 deficit at the break. 'We spoke about how us as Australians haven't won here since 1963. We have a quiet confidence about us and we are building,' he said. McReight a 'quiet leader' After naming his matchday 23, Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt said McReight's selection as captain was an easy one after he played well while taking over the captaincy for Harry Wilson following the latter's injury and substitution in the 64th minute. 'He is a quiet leader. You don't need someone who is remonstrating or saying a lot,' Schmidt said of McReight, who also captained the Australian U20s in 2019. 'We just need someone who is going to demonstrate the right performance on field that other people are going to follow. I think Fraser has demonstrated that.' He said with Allan Alaalatoa, James Slipper, Harry Wilson and Liam Wright out injured, Fraser maintained leadership in the side. 'I wouldn't say it was a process of elimination because that's not fair to Fraser, but it was probably not ideal that he is a first-time captain for us. But he at least got a little bit of experience on the back end of the game when Harry went off.' Wallabies select a debutant at Cape Town Schmidt said Corey Toole, 25, who will make his debut starting at left wing, would be threatening, especially in the air. 'He's a great young kid. He's come in from the sevens programme and it's something that a number of the South African speedsters have done as well,' the Wallabies coach said. Toole's inclusion was one of three changes to the starting side, with back-to-back John Eales medallist, Rob Valetini replacing Wilson at eight.
