New West Virginia coach Ross Hodge's five-year agreement will pay him $15 million and includes a hefty buyout if he leaves within a year — a nod to predecessor Darian DeVries, according to a document released by the school Friday.
After Hodge signed the document on March 26, he remained as head coach at North Texas for another week. The Mean Green lost in the NIT semifinals on Tuesday. Hodge was introduced as West Virginia's coach on Thursday.

Hodge is West Virginia's fourth coach in as many years. He was hired a week after DeVries left after one season to become the coach at Indiana.
Hodge's $250,000 base salary and total compensation are similar to what DeVries agreed to a year ago.
But Devries' buyout was considerably lower. He had to pay West Virginia 37.5% of the remaining total compensation from his five-year deal. Hodge will have to pay 75% if he leaves after one year, 56.25% after the second year and 37.5% after that.
Hodge will receive a one-year extension and a $100,000 raise for a sixth contract year if West Virginia advances to the NCAA Tournament or finishes in the top six of the Big 12 standings in either of his first two seasons. DeVries had that incentive only for a sixth-place or better finish.

If Hodge leaves before his first season is up on April 30, 2026, his buyout would be $11.6 million if the raise incentive is included and $9.2 million if it isn't. One twist: if athletic director Wren Baker is no longer in his role, Hodge's buyout would drop significantly in the first two years.
Hodge has myriad performance incentives based on academics, season ticket sales, coaches' awards, conference standings and how far West Virginia advances in the NCAA Tournament.
As part of the agreement, West Virginia will pay $1.2 million to North Texas. Baker was the AD from 2016 to 2022 at North Texas, where Hodge was an assistant for six seasons under Grant McCasland, now at Texas Tech. Hodge went 46-24 in two seasons as the Mean Green's head coach.
Hodge's annual average salary of $3 million would have ranked 10th among the 16 coaches in the Big 12 last season, according to a USA Today database that was updated last month.

Baker said a formal contract with Hodge is expected to be completed within 60 days.

Teddy Bridgewater set to return to the NFL with the Buccaneers to back up Baker Mayfield

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Teddy Bridgewater is nearing a return to the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht said Bridgewater is visiting the team and the Bucs plan to sign him. The Buccaneers will be the eighth team in 12 seasons for the 32-year-old Bridgewater. Bridgewater coached his former high school in Miami to a Class 3A state championship last fall and then returned to the NFL in late December to serve as a backup to Jared Goff for the playoff-bound Lions. He would provide insurance for the four-time defending NFC South champions behind Baker Mayfield. The Buccaneers also have veteran Kyle Trask, who has thrown 11 passes in four seasons since he was a second-round pick in 2021. Mayfield returned to practice Tuesday after missing a couple of days because of a hand contusion. Bridgewater said last month that he was suspended from coaching Miami Northwestern High School because he provided players with financial benefits that he says he reported to the school. 'I'm not going anywhere,' Bridgewater said on social media post. 'And if it comes down to it, I will volunteer from the bleachers like I used to in 2018 and 2019 when no one had a problem.' Bridgewater, a first-round pick by Minnesota in 2014, is 33-32 as a starter and made the Pro Bowl after his second season when he led the Vikings to an 11-5 record. He also spent time with the Jets, Saints, Panthers, Broncos and Dolphins. Bridgewater has completed 66.4% of his passes for 15,120 yards, 75 touchdowns, 47 interceptions and a 90.5 passer rating. Buccaneers offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard was an assistant coach in Miami in 2022 when Bridgewater backed up Tua Tagovailoa. Buccaneers defensive line coach Charlie Strong was Bridgewater's head coach at Louisville. Tampa Bay's quarterback room also includes Michael Pratt and Connor Bazelak. Pratt, a seventh-round pick out of Tulane by Green Bay in 2024 who signed to the Buccaneers' practice squad last August, has been sidelined by a back injury. Bazelak signed as an undrafted free agent out of Bowling Green where he spent the final two of his six college seasons.

Jorge Costa, Champions League winning captain of Porto, dies at 53

PORTO, Portugal (AP) — Jorge Costa, who captained Porto to the 2004 Champions League title, died Tuesday of cardiac arrest, the club said. He was 53. Costa, a central defender who made 50 international appearances for Portugal, was Porto's director of football at the time of his death. The club's said in its announcement that Costa embodied Porto's values: 'dedication, leadership, passion, and an unwavering spirit of conquest.' Portuguese media reported that Costa sustained cardiac arrest at the club's training center and was transported to São João Hospital.
