Auburn gymnast Sophia Groth named first female captain as program expands to recognize student-athletes in every sport
NORTHBROOK, Ill., March 12, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Today, Allstate and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) announce the inaugural Allstate NACDA Good Works Team (Winter), recognizing 20 standout student-athletes across collegiate winter sports for their exceptional achievements in community service, athletics and academics. This marks the first-ever expansion of the Good Works Team to include student-athletes from all collegiate sports and divisions.
The final team was voted on by the program's esteemed Selection Committee from an impressive pool of nearly 200 nominees nationwide. These student-athletes represent nine winter sports and five collegiate divisions, demonstrating the far-reaching impact of student-athletes in their communities.
Auburn gymnast Sophia Groth has been named team captain, becoming the first female student-athlete to lead the distinguished group. As president of Auburn's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Groth has championed community outreach, supported fellow student-athletes and advocated for student-parents working to complete their degrees through programs like Baby Steps. Groth also spearheaded The Big House Toy Drive, brightening the holidays for children in need across the state of Alabama.
"I'm honored to be named captain of this incredible team," said Groth. "Leadership isn't just about what we accomplish in sports—it's about how we give back. I'm proud to represent my teammates and my school as we work together to make a difference."
Announced in December 2024, the Allstate NACDA Good Works Team builds on the legacy of the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, which has honored college football players' community impact since 1992. Now expanded to include all sanctioned national championship sports, the initiative will recognize 60 student-athletes annually across fall, winter and spring seasons.
Meet the Allstate NACDA Good Works Team (Winter)
The inaugural 20-member team features student-athletes from all levels of collegiate competition, including junior/community college, NAIA and NCAA Division I, II and III. Honorees represent winter sports such as hockey, basketball, swimming and diving, gymnastics and track and field. Among those recognized are:
Audrey Wethington, Minnesota, Hockey: Dedicated more than 1,000 hours to heart research at the Visible Heart Laboratories and volunteers at Masonic Children's Hospital, brightening patients' days through therapeutic activities.
Sion James, Duke, Basketball: Founded the Sion James Foundation to serve and strengthen communities, organizing his One-4-All Toy Drive that has delivered 1,800 toys to children.
Colby Kern, Saint John's University (Minn.), Swimming & Diving: Leads an annual meal-packing event to fight food insecurity, providing nearly 90,000 meals for his community in 2024 alone.
The full team roster and their inspiring stories can be found on the Allstate NACDA Good Works Team website.
"These student-athletes embody the best of collegiate athletics—not just in competition, but in leadership, service and impact," said Elizabeth Brady, Allstate's chief marketing, customer and communications officer. "From youth empowerment to mental health advocacy, their work changes lives."
"NACDA is honored to collaborate with Allstate to expand the Good Works Team program and recognize student-athletes across all sports and all divisions," said Pat Manak, NACDA's chief executive officer. "This initiative provides a national platform for our members to shine a light on the positive and inspirational stories happening at all levels of intercollegiate athletics during a pivotal time in our industry. Congratulations to the student-athletes and institutions represented on the inaugural Winter Team, and we look forward to continuing the process in the seasons to come."
The Allstate NACDA Good Works Team will spotlight student-athletes' service throughout the year, with upcoming teams for spring and fall sports.

Where does CBS Sports rank the Auburn Tigers ahead of 2025 college football season?

Auburn football has the tools to have its best season under head coach Hugh Freeze, but it still has a mountain to climb to reach the top of the college football world. CBS Sports is the latest outlet to give Auburn confidence heading into the 2025 season while still leaving room for improvement. In its preseason ranking of all 136 teams, Auburn checks in at No. 32, being one of 12 SEC teams ranked in CBS' top 40. Auburn's journey to College Football Playoff consideration will be challenging as it will face eight teams in CBS Sports' top 50 during the 2025 season. The Tigers will kick off the season on Friday, Aug. 29, in Waco, Texas, by battling the Baylor Bears in a primetime showdown. The Bears, like Auburn, are just outside of the top-25 by checking in at No. 26. After hosting Ball State and South Alabama in weeks two and three, Auburn will then go on a run of playing four-straight top-30 squads in Oklahoma (No. 24), Texas A&M (No. 18), Georgia (No. 5) and Missouri (No. 28), two of those games will be on the road. The Tigers will then face No. 43 Arkansas on the road before turning its attention to No. 57 Kentucky and No. 47 Vanderbilt as the calendar turns to November. Auburn will then end its 2025 regular season at home against No. 8 Alabama. Auburn will look to improve upon last season's 5-7 record and will rely heavily on its talented offensive stars and defensive players who will create havoc for the opposition. Several players to look for this season will be Eric Singleton and Cam Coleman, who were recently included on the Biletnikoff Award watchlist. Those two, as well as EDGE rusher Keldric Faulk, were also named in Bruce Feldman's "freaks list" ahead of the year. Auburn basketball reveals jersey numbers for new-look roster

Auburn basketball experienced a complete roster overhaul during the offseason as many of its stars graduated or found other opportunities through the transfer portal. The Tigers will have a fresh starting lineup this season, as last season's Final Four starters have departed from the program. Bruce Pearl will work to replace the production of graduating stars, such as forward Johni Broome, sharp-shooting Miles Kelly, and floor general Denver Jones. However, Auburn found success within the transfer portal by landing several talented frontcourt additions, such as Mississippi State forward Keshawn Murphy and UCF forward Keyshawn Hall. Pearl also dipped into junior college and the international circuit to fill out his roster by landing Abdul Bashir from Casper College, and two players with center-esque size in Emeka Opurum and Filip Jovic. Despite adding many new names, Auburn will have one key player from last season's Final Four squad in Tahaad Pettiford. As a freshman, Pettiford averaged 11.6 points per game with 3.0 assists and 2.2 rebounds while serving as the backup point guard. He is projected to lead the Tigers as the floor general this season. Here's a look at Auburn's revamped roster, complete with new jersey numbers for the 2025-26 season. Chuma Okeke signs contract with Real Madrid ahead of next season

Former Auburn basketball star Chuma Okeke will be taking his talents to Spain next season. The former first-round NBA draft pick signed a contract to play with Real Madrid next season, ending his five-year run in the NBA. A member of Auburn's first Final Four team in 2019, Okeke was a breakout star in the NCAA Tournament before suffering a brutal knee injury in the Sweet 16 against North Carolina. The sophomore collected double-digit points in each of the three contests he appeared in, culminating in a 20-point, 11-rebound effort to lead Auburn over the top-seeded Tarheels. The injury caused uncertainty around the star's draft prospects, but the Orlando Magic still selected him in the first round, at pick No. 16. Okeke spent four seasons with Orlando to begin his career before playing with the Philadelphia 76ers and Cleveland Cavaliers last season. While a return to the association is still on the table for the 26-year-old forward, he could choose to stay oversees after seeing the success of former teammates Jared Harper and Austin Wiley, as well as former Tiger Wendell Green, in the EuroBasket curcuit. When Okeke touches down in Spain, he'll join a Real Madrid squad that has reached the EuroLeague Final Four in six of the last seven seasons. The roster features many former NBA players, including Mario Hezonja, Théo Maledon, Bruno Fernando, and Facundo Campazzo.
