Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath approved the construction of a bridge over the Ganga river and a road overbridge during his visit here on Monday as he lauded artisans for the local carpet industry's "resurgence".Noting the famed carpet industry of Bhadohi has led to Uttar Pradesh gaining a 60 per cent share in India's carpet exports, he emphasised the state's support to boost the industry's global footprint."Ten years ago, this industry was in a poor state. But local artisans have revived it with encouragement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. As a result, Uttar Pradesh now accounts for 60 per cent of India's carpet exports, with Bhadohi contributing the largest share," Adityanath said.He stressed that the industry's Geographical Indication (GI) tag and the development of the Carpet Expo Mart were the results of coordinated efforts by both the Central and state governments. The government is also supporting entrepreneurs and artisans through various initiatives to promote India's ancient handicrafts globally, the chief minister highlighted. In a major infrastructural push, Adityanath approved the construction of a bridge over the Ganga river near Dengarhpur in Sitamarhi and a road overbridge on the railway line between Gopiganj and Mirzapur. The chief minister directed officials to expedite the development of an already approved mini-stadium and said an auditorium that has been sanctioned at the district headquarters would now be developed as a multipurpose hall.He said efforts were underway to prioritise residential facilities for government officers and staffers. The status of outsourced sanitation workers under the Panchayati Raj Department was being reviewed, and steps would be taken to improve connectivity to roads linked with the district headquarters, Adityanath said.Adityanath also inspected the district hospital, describing it as a "living monument of the previous government's apathy and corruption." He said his administration had restarted work at the facility and was overseeing the construction of a 50-bed critical care centre."Funds have been sanctioned for the renovation of the old hospital building and the target is to complete it by this December."The chief minister also hinted at plans to establish a medical college in Bhadohi under the public-private partnership model and said preparations were ongoing to meet required norms.Referring to local education infrastructure, Adityanath spoke about the expansion of Kashi Naresh Government PG College."A proposal has been sought for land allocation. With the establishment of the agriculture faculty and staffing, the college could be developed into a state university if over 50 acres of land is made available, he said.

UP rank first in country on highest investment in development and infrastructure

Lucknow, June 24 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh has ranked first in the country for highest investment in development and infrastructure. This was due to fastest industrial development in the state during the past 8 years. According to the recent report, UP alone is estimated to have a share of 16.3% in the financial year 2025-26 in India's total capital expenses, which is the highest in all states. This will be the second consecutive year when Uttar Pradesh will be on top of capital expenditure under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. It is noteworthy that capital expenditure means the amount that governments spend on the construction or acquisition of permanent assets such as roads and highways, schools, hospitals etc. In simple terms, this is the expense that the government makes for future convenience and development such as building infrastructure. According to the recent report submitted by Bank of Baroda, the total capital expenditure of 26 states of the country is estimated to reach ₹ 10.2 lakh crore in FY 2025-26, which was ₹ 8.7 lakh crore in the last financial year. According to the report, Uttar Pradesh have a share of 16.3% followed by Gujarat (9.4%), Maharashtra (8.3%), Madhya Pradesh (8.1%) and Karnataka (7.6%) These five states will jointly spend more than 50% of the country's total capital expenditure. At the top of these figures, the name of Uttar Pradesh is an indication that the speed of infrastructure and industrial development in the state is faster. In the last financial year 2024-25, UP also spent the highest 16.9% capital. This was followed by Maharashtra (10.9%), Gujarat (8.1%), Madhya Pradesh (7.5%) and Odisha (6.4%). Reports says that large projects such as the strategic plan, investor conferences, logistics hub construction, expressway and airports expanded by the UP government in the last few years have made the state the country's head in terms of capital investment. Mega projects such as UP Industrial Defence Corridor, International Film City, Medical Colleges and Ganga Expressway mega projects are also prominent examples. UP has also become the first choice for domestic and foreign investors due to the improvement in the Ease of Doing Business along with better Law and Order. The huge investment proposals received during the Global Investors Summit 2023 are now coming down on the ground, which has also increased the state's capital experience and new employment opportunities are also arising for the youth. Not only this, the joint efforts of the Central and State Government have given a big lead to budget allocation, approval of projects and financial assistance. This has given significant boost to capital expenditure in areas like health, education, infrastructure and urban development, the report claimed. According to the report, the total receipts of 26 states in the current financial year are estimated at Rs 69.4 trillion. This amount is 10.6 percent more than the last financial year. The bank has estimated 12.3 percent increase in revenue receipts and 6.6 percent increase in capital receipts. In this too, once again Uttar Pradesh is expected to be at the top with 13.3 percent stake. At number two is Maharashtra (11.3 percent), Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Rajasthan with 5.9 percent each. Tamil Nadu is not included in the top five this time. The report of the Bank of Baroda states that all states will be very dependent on internal taxes and GST will be the largest part of its own tax revenue. States revenue are estimated by 89 percent income from other taxes including GST, sales tax, excise and stamp duty. The largest share of this will be of GST (44.2 percent). Nagaland (67.3 percent), Delhi (59.7 percent) and Bihar (57.1 percent) states are the highest dependent on GST, while Madhya Pradesh (38.6 percent), Andhra Pradesh (37.4 percent) and Arunachal Pradesh (19.7 percent) have lowest dependencies. The contribution of state excise duty on alcohol and tobacco is estimated to be 13.9 percent. The top three states in this category are Sikkim (27.3 percent), Andhra Pradesh (24.9 percent) and Uttar Pradesh (21.4 percent). UNI MBD GNK

Balanagar custard apple inches closer to GI tag

HYDERABAD: Farmers and officials on Monday submitted an application seeking the Geographical Indication (GI) tag for the world-famous Balanagar custard apple, marking the 19th GI application from Telangana. The application was filed by GI practitioner Subhajit Saha of Resolute4IP on behalf of three key farmer-based organisations — Pomal Farmer Producer Company Ltd, Balanagar Farmer Producer Company Ltd, and Primary Agricultural Cooperative Society — with support from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD). The Balanagar custard apple is renowned for its thick rind, high pulp content, minimal seeds, naturally sweet flavour, and extended shelf life — characteristics that set it apart from other varieties and make it ideal for both fresh consumption and industrial use. This move places the Balanagar variety as the fourth custard apple in India to seek or obtain a GI tag, alongside Beed custard apple (Maharashtra), Seoni sitaphal (Madhya Pradesh), and Kanker custard apple (Chhattisgarh). 'This GI initiative underscores how formal recognition can create value at the grassroots level while reinforcing Telangana's position as a hub for high-quality, origin-linked produce,' said Subhajit Saha, expressing gratitude for the support extended by Sri Konda Laxman Telangana Horticultural University (SKLTGHU). He added that the state is preparing to file six to eight additional GI applications for products in the handicrafts and horticulture sectors in the coming days. SKLTGHU V-C Danda Raji Reddy, said the university is committed to preserving Telangana's heritage horticultural crops and that further GI applications will be filed after thorough field investigations and consultations with farmers.

After China, India set to get regional centre of Peru-based premier potato institute

The Central Government is likely to clear a proposal to set up a regional centre of Peru-based International Potato Center (CIP), a premier research-for-development organisation with a focus on potato and sweet potato, in India. The proposed centre — CIP-South Asia Regional Centre (CIP-SARC) — will come up in Agra, and will serve farmers not only in potato belt states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal but also cater to South Asian countries. It is learnt that the Union Cabinet is likely to soon approve a proposal of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare to set up the centre. The development comes months after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath wrote to the Centre, seeking early establishment of a regional centre of the CIP in the district of Agra. Recently, an Agriculture Ministry delegation led by Devesh Chaturvedi, Agriculture Secretary, visited Peru. Highlighting the delay in the establishment of the centre, Adityanath wrote a letter to Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on January 20. In the letter, Adityanath urged Chouhan to direct the officials concerned in his ministry to pave the way for the early establishment of the International Potato Center (CIP)- South Asia Regional Center at Singana, Agra. The sources say that the project will be worth $20 million (about Rs 160 crore), of which India will contribute $13 million, while the remaining $7 million will be funded by CIP. The UP government has provided 10 hectares of land for the proposed Centre. The CIP-SARC will work not only for UP but for the entire country and South Asia, said sources, adding that the proposed centre will focus on the development of new varieties, which are climate resilient, disease-free, and are suitable for processing. It will bring global science expertise, an extensive global innovation network and global genetic resources, said the sources. The proposed centre in Agra comes 8 years after China set up a similar CIP centre. The CIP's China centre, known as the China Center for Asia Pacific (CCCAP), was established in Yanqing, Beijing, in 2017. Apart from China, the centre serves the entire East Asia and the Pacific region. Headquartered in Lima, Peru, the CIP was founded in 1971 as a research-for-development organisation with a focus on potato, sweet potato and Andean roots and tubers. The potato crop is native to the Peruvian-Bolivian Andes in South America. The proposed CIP-SARC will be the second major international agricultural research institution to set up its operations in India. In 2017, the Agriculture Ministry supported the establishment of a regional centre of the Philippines-based International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). The IRRI-SARC is established in Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's parliamentary constituency. As of now, at least two different centres of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) work on tuber crops. While the Shimla-based ICAR-Central Potato Research Institute (CPRI) is working on potato, the Thiruvananthapuram-based ICAR-Central Tuber Crops Research Institute (CTCRI) is working on sweet potato. China is the top potato producer and consumer in the world, and it is followed by India. In 2020, China's potato production was recorded at 78.24 million tonnes, while India recorded a production of 51.30 million tonnes. Both countries accounted for over one-third of the global potato production (359.07 million tonnes). In India, Uttar Pradesh (15 million tonnes), West Bengal (15 million tonnes), and Bihar (9 million tonnes) were the top three potato producers in 2020-21. The other states having significant potato production are Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Punjab.
