#FishEagle: Anglers net surprise catches as sardine run nears end
More fish were netted this year than expected, while mostly favourable sea conditions contributed to excellent returns. Surf anglers also enjoyed some hectic fishing when the sardines moved inshore, catching trophy fish and a few unexpected species as the winter fishing season kicked off.
Some notable catches were reported on the South Coast, where salmon, bronze bream and prized brusher were hooked among the usual shad and garrick. Those fishing off Margate Pier said yellowtail were being caught by anglers targeting shad, while sandbanks along the coast have made conditions difficult.
Closer to home last week, anglers faced strong winds and rough seas, which limited beach time. Those who braved the cold found a few shad and garrick at first light in Ballito and at the Tongaat River mouth respectively. Anglers fishing in the afternoons reported that grey sharks have returned in numbers.
The rocky outcrops and gullies served up decent returns, including good-sized brusher, large pinkies and plenty of blacktail. The rough water should have been ideal for bronze bream, but very few were caught locally.
Offshore anglers were limited by sea conditions, with only three fishable days throughout the week. A few snoek and garrick were caught along the backline, while the inshore reefs produced the usual bottom fish.
Looking ahead, more wind is, unfortunately, forecast for this week.

Persistent rain expected across KwaZulu-Natal coastal areas
KwaZulu-Natal's coastal belt, including Durban, will experience a wet Friday with showers extending into the weekend. Forecaster Mpho Rasimphi said, 'We expect rainy conditions for Durban and surrounding areas, with temperatures peaking at around 24°C on Friday.' The wet spell will cover coastal and some inland regions, with surrounding towns expecting cooler conditions and highs around 23°C. Saturday will see rain extending from KwaZulu-Natal into the Eastern Cape and parts of the interior. 'Rainy conditions are set to persist into Saturday, particularly along the coast, while inland regions will remain cool and damp,' Rasimphi said. Despite the persistent showers, maximum temperatures in many KZN areas will remain mild in the low to mid-20s. Overnight lows in Durban are forecast at around 17°C, while inland areas will experience cooler nights. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. Thundershowers expected in parts of KwaZulu-Natal
KwaZulu-Natal residents in the southern parts should brace for wet weather tomorrow. Showers and thundershowers are forecast across various parts of the province. Forecaster Phemelo Zonke said the cold front is driving unstable weather over the southeastern regions, affecting both inland and coastal areas. Early morning fog patches are expected in some areas, potentially reducing visibility to less than a kilometre. Motorists are urged to drive cautiously during the morning commute. Zonke advised, 'Fog can set in quickly and unexpectedly in coastal and inland valleys. Keep headlights on low beam, maintain safe following distances, and avoid sudden stops.' Tomorrow, showers and rain will also affect the Eastern Cape's southern coastline, while thundershowers will occur in the Northern Cape and Free State. KwaZulu-Natal's interior will remain cooler, while coastal cities may see warmer breaks between showers. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. Mild daytime conditions expected for Gauteng
Gauteng will experience mild and mostly dry conditions on Thursday, 14 August. Maximum temperatures in Johannesburg and Pretoria are expected to peak at around 24°C. Forecaster Phemelo Zonke said the province will remain largely unaffected by the passing cold front, but motorists should take note of morning driving conditions. 'We expect early morning fog patches in parts of Limpopo that could reduce visibility to less than a kilometre. While Gauteng itself will be mostly clear, neighbouring regions may experience reduced visibility, so motorists travelling in or out should drive cautiously and keep a safe following distance,' Zonke explained. The cold front is now positioned southeast of the country, resulting in showers and thundershowers in the eastern parts of the Northern Cape, southern Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Eastern Cape. Gauteng, however, will largely remain with mild, fine to partly cloudy conditions. Zonke noted, 'This system affects central and southeastern regions more than Gauteng. Residents here can expect cool to warm conditions without significant rainfall.' The South African Weather Service has issued a high fire danger warning for the northeastern parts of the Northern Cape. While this does not directly affect Gauteng, authorities urge residents in the region to avoid activities that may spark fires.
