Jamie Overton, who Ashwin once said wears 15-spikes shoes to rough pitches, added to England squad for fifth Test
The 31-year-old Surrey all-rounder, who played three games for Chennai Super Kings in the last edition of IPL, had taken two wickets and scored 97 against New Zealand at Leeds back in 2022. Save the addition of Overton, the 14, who were selected in the previous game, have all been retained.
Last month India spinner R Ashwin had recalled an incident in county cricket where Overton had a shoe spike as long as his index finger. The reasoning for the spike of that length Ashwin would reveal that it helped create roughness for the spinners later in the game, and can exploit the turn.
We've made one addition to our squad for the 5th Rothesay Test, which starts at the Kia Oval on Thursday.

'During my county cricket days, I remember checking out the spikes in Jamie Overton's shoes. One of his shoes had 15 spikes. One of the nails was this long (shows his index fingers), and when asked the reason, he said that these shoes were used to create the rough in the second innings. We don't even have the concept of such shoes in our country,' Ashwin had said on his YouTube Channel.
Meanwhile, the fourth Test between England and India ended in a stalemate after centuries from skipper Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar saw India dominate the final day's play at Old Trafford where drama unfolded in the last hour when England captain Stokes and Co. wanted to call off the match, only to be refused by the visitors who were well within their rights to continue batting.
Stokes also hinted at his participation in the fifth and final Test against India at Oval despite carrying an injury, saying 'pain is just an emotion' but acknowledged the need to rejig their tired bowling attack.
Stokes, who grimaced throughout while bowling 11 overs on Sunday, said he had been suffering from pain in his right bicep tendon.
England Test Squad: Ben Stokes (Captain), Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Jamie Overton, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes.

Wait, what? 261 IPL jerseys worth ₹6.5 lakh stolen from Wankhede Stadium
A security guard at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) office in Mumbai was arrested for stealing IPL 2025 team jerseys worth ₹ 6.5 lakh. The theft took place at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. The accused, identified as 40-year-old Farooque Aslam Khan, allegedly stole 261 jerseys, each valued at around ₹ 2,500. Police said Khan committed the theft to fund his online gambling habit. The incident reportedly occurred on June 13 but only came to light after a routine audit revealed missing stock from the storeroom. Upon checking CCTV footage, BCCI officials saw Khan walking out with a box full of jerseys. The stolen kits were of different IPL teams, though it remains unclear whether they were meant for players or for public sale. Investigators said Khan sold the jerseys to an online dealer based in Haryana, whom he had connected with through social media. "The guard claims he haggled a bit with the online dealer, but he hasn't yet specified how much he got for the deal," a police source told TOI. The police further stated that the jerseys were sent via courier to the Haryana-based dealer, who has now been summoned for questioning. "The online dealer says he was not aware that the jerseys had been stolen," a police official said. "The guard had told the man in Haryana that the jerseys were part of a stock clearance sale due to renovation work that was going on at the office." So far, 50 of the 261 stolen jerseys have been recovered. Khan has reportedly told police that he received payment directly into his bank account but lost all the money to online gambling. "He the guard claims he lost it all to online gambling," the police source added. Authorities are now verifying his bank details to confirm his version of events.

After Gautam Gambhir's Outburst, Oval Curator Breaks Silence On Heated Spat Ahead Of 5th Test
London: India head coach Gautam Gambhir was on Tuesday involved in a heated exchange of words with the Oval's chief curator Lee Fortis and was heard telling him "you don't tell us what we need to do" while pointing fingers at the groundstaff. The Oval will host the fifth and final Test between India and England from Thursday, and the Indian team has hit the ground running two days after staging a remarkable comeback to draw the fourth match in Manchester. During the training session, videos that have now gone viral on social media clearly showed an upset Gambhir getting into a verbal altercation with the curator, prompting India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak to intervene and douse the situation. The tiff started when Fortis told Gambhir: "I will have to report this" and to that the Indian head coach replied rather tersely: "You go and report whatever you want to report." Kotak stepped in at this point, took the Englishman to a different corner and said: "We won't damage anything." Other Indian support staff such as bowling coach Morne Morkel and assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate were seen listening keenly to the argument. While it was not clear why the two got into an argument, Gambhir and Fortis appeared to be arguing over the conditions of the pitches for practice. However, Gambhir turned back again to tell Fortis that he should not be telling his side "what to do." "You can't tell us what to do. You are just one of the groundsmen, nothing beyond," Gambhir was seen telling in the video. Fortis and Gambhir then went their separate ways, with the India coach returning to oversee the net session. Later while walking from the field to his room, Fortis said: "It's a big game, and he (Gambhir) is a bit touchy." Meanwhile Sai Sudharsan, who registered a half-century and a duck in the Manchester Test, was the first one to arrive at the venue for practice, where left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav was also seen putting in some hard yards. Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh too was seen bowling under the watchful eyes of Morkel.

Ugly spat between Gambhir and Oval curator add spice to series finale
London, Jul 29 (PTI) India's training session two days before the series deciding fifth Test against England became a sideshow as head coach Gautam Gambhir got involved in a heated verbal spat with The Oval's chief curator Lee Fortis who allegedly asked the visiting team's support staff to stand 2.5 visitors from the pitch. Gambhir was on Tuesday heard telling Fortis 'you don't tell any of us what we need to do, you have no right to tell us, you are just a groundsman nothing beyond" while pointing fingers at the chief curator. In response Fortis was heard saying 'I will have to report this." In the presence of 10 squad members minus captain Shubman Gill, the training session in the field of play was going on as usual until Gambhir blasted Fortis, who is not the 'easiest person to work with" despite winning ECB's best multi-day pitches award for the last three years. India's batting coach Sitanshu Kotak tried to douse the fire by taking Fortis away from Gambhir, who was visibly angry with the chief curator. Later, Kotak explained what really happened in the middle. 'When we went to take a look at the wicket the coaches were there, someone came to us and said 'stand 2.5 metres away', which was little surprising. Day after there is a Test match, we had our joggers on not spike and it felt a bit awkward. I have never seen anything like that in my life. 'The Indian players had told me that he is not the easiest person to work with. Now you all know. It is okay to be protective and possessive about this pitch but not to this extent," said Kotak. While the drama was unfolding, the travelling Indian media approached Fortis for his thoughts on the incident but he did not have much to say. 'He is a bit tetchy it is a big game this week. You saw what he was like this morning. You have to ask him (what happened)," Fortis said. 'It's not an antique' ============= Kotak hinted the situation may have slipped out of control due to the tone of communication. 'Curators also needs to understand that the people they are talking to, they are highly skilled and intelligent. So for example if you go on the ground now where we practiced you won't even see that any bowlers in outfield would have marked with his spikes. 'We try and see that this ground also should not get damaged. So when you are working with a very intelligent and highly skilled people if you sound a bit arrogant or if you come across like you know you can be protective but end of the day it's a cricket pitch. 'It's not an antique where you can't touch because otherwise it's 200 years old and it can be broken you know," Kotak said. 'So that's what I feel. I mean that's after a day we were with rubber standing there. You tell me day after day a batsman will be sliding to survive from run out. A bowler will be sliding there to stop the ball. So maybe he is thinking that we are trying to grow the grass. I mean I don't know." With England not scheduled to train on Monday, head coach Brendon McCullum and ECB managing director Rob Key came to see the pitch in casual clothes but Kotak said no instructions were issued to them from The Oval groundstaff. According to Kotak, what made the situation worse was that Fortis shouted at one member of the Indian team support staff to not take the cooling box near the main square. Kotak also ruled out filing any complaint with the ECB over the incident. 'I was thinking that you will ask about the draw of the last match (laughs). No, when one of the support staff was bringing the cooling box there, still Fortis was sitting on the roller, he shouted and told the support staff not to take it there. Now the weight of that cooling box will be 10 kilos according to me. 'He said something like that from a distance that do not take the cooling box there. So, it is good to be a little possessive and it is also good to be protective, but not that much. 'So, then Gautam just said that do not talk to the support staff like this, because the support staff, we all come under the head coach. Any head coach will say that you cannot shout from there and say this. 'So, it was very normal. Then he came there and he was saying, I think it got built up from the wicket when we were watching. And to be very, very honest, if you want me to be very honest, before coming to Oval, most of the team knows that the curator is not the easiest person to get on with. 'And I am sure you also would be aware of it. So, that gives a lot of answers. No, I do not think there is any point in complaining," Kotan elaborated on the incident. Surrey, the county that owns the stadium, did not give an official statement on the altercation but sources said the curator was only trying to protect the main square with the ground hosting more than 60 days of cricket in a season. It was no surprise that most of the questions during Kotak's media interaction were related to the Gambhir-Fortis showdown. 'If somebody is trying to put something in the wicket or somebody is wearing spikes, the curator feels that it is fine. But it was a very strange way of saying you go and stand two and a half metres away from here. 'So, I think that is what started. Because Gautam is someone who does not even speak unnecessary things. He does not talk to anyone. 'Last four games we played, everywhere, wherever we go, all the curators where they talk, they even tell you when they are going to cut the grass, whether they are going to cut the grass. And if they do not want to give an answer, they will say, we will see on the weather, we will see tomorrow. So, that is a good answer. 'So, specifically the wicket will be used for the match. Gautam was trying to just take a look at it. And I was there. All coaches were there. So, I think looking at the wicket is not a bad thing with the joggers on," Kotak went on.
