Messi's latest brace lifts Miami to 2-1 MLS victory over Nashville
Argentine superstar Lionel Messi continued his historic Major League Soccer scoring run Saturday, netting two goals to lift Inter Miami to a 2-1 victory over Nashville.
Four days after he became the first player ever to score multiple goals in four straight MLS matches, Messi delivered his fifth brace in five MLS games and Miami continued their climb up the Eastern Conference standings after their league hiatus for the Club World Cup.

Messi, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner, opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a free kick, his left-footed shot finding its way through the only gap in Nashville's defensive wall and past goalkeeper Joe Willis.
Miami dominated in the first half, but just four minutes into the second half, Hany Mukhtar's header pulled Nashville level.
Messi came to the rescue again, grabbing the game-winner in the 62nd minute when he capitalized on a bad mistake from Willis -- who misjudged a pass to tee up Messi for the strike.
The two goals took Messi's total to 16 in 16 appearances this season tied with Nashville's Sam Surridge, who was unable to add to his tally of 16 on Saturday.

Miami were playing their third match since returning to MLS action in the wake of a month-long Club World Cup campaign that ended when they were eliminated in the round of 16 by Paris Saint-Germain.
With 38 points from 19 matches, they moved into fourth place in the East, five points behind leaders Philadelphia but with three games in hand.

Cleveland Browns fans will get their first look at 2025 fifth-round pick Shedeur Sanders in live game action, projected to start at quarterback in the team's Week 1 preseason game against the Carolina Panthers, Mary Kay Cabot reported Tuesday. Sanders finds himself in line for the start amidst injuries to fellow rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel and Kenny Pickett, who's heading into his fourth NFL season. Veteran Joe Flacco was recently listed as the team's intended starter for the 2025 season on the Browns' initial depth chart, with Pickett listed as the backup, followed by Gabriel at No. 3 and Sanders last on the depth chart at No. 4. The preseason US LBM Coaches Poll is out, and soon enough, the media poll, the AP Top 25, will be hitting the wire as well. The coaches poll fulfilled the offseason hype for Penn State by placing the Nittany Lions at no. 3 in the nation with 14 first-place votes cast in their favor. Penn State has been a trendy pick this offseason with a roster loaded and primed to take another step forward this fall. Adding fuel to the hype train is the first look at the ranking of every FBS team served up by CBS Sports. Chip Patterson of CBS Sports takes on the duty of ranking all 136 FBS programs throughout the season (USA TODAY Sports will have a similar ranking as well), and he is echoing the praise of so many for Penn State this offseason with his preseason rankings. Patterson ranks Penn State at no. 2 in his preseason ranking of every FBS program, with only the Texas Longhorns coming in ahead of Drew Allar, Nicholas Singleton, Zane Durant, and the rest of the Nittany Lions. Penn State is one spot ahead of Ohio State in this particular ranking, for whatever that is worth. Penn State finished the 2024 season ranked fifth in Patterson's ranking.
