John Higgins offers clear verdict on Ronnie O'Sullivan's radical snooker plan

Daily Mirror28-04-2025
Seven-time world snooker champions Ronnie O'Sullivan is advocating for a plan that would boost the sport in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland and John Higgins has given his verdict
Snooker legend John Higgins has enthusiastically backed Ronnie O'Sullivan's radical plan to allow snooker in Britian and Ireland to blossom, and would love to be involved. The seven-time world champion has advocated for academies to be launched in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland in a bid to stop a Chinese takeover of the sport.
A record 10 players from China made it to this year's World Snooker Championship, with four players among the top 16 seeds. Seven of those players are in their 20s, with two Wu Yize and Lei Peifan only 21.

The nation had previously had two seeded players on five occasions, with trailblazer Ding Junhui being the first Chinese player to reach the Crucible back in 2007. The 38-year-old remains the highest ranked player from his homeland.

But China appears set to continue to blossom as a snooker nation. Most of those playing at the Crucible came through an academy in Beijing, and the country has also set up two bases in Sheffield.
And now the Rocket wants to see a new offering across nations. O'Sullivan would lead an academy in England, and Class of 92 rivals Higgins and Mark Williams could front the ones in Scotland and Wales respectively, in his proposal.
Four-time champion Higgins, who remains world No.3 and is set to take on three-time winner Williams in this year's quarter-finals would only be happy to involved. "It's a brilliant idea," he said.
"I would love it if Scotland could invest in something like that. Snooker's been an unbelievable sport for Scotland with Stephen Hendry starting the revolution and a lot of us following his lead.
"I would be up for anything like that. If Sport Scotland were up for investing in something like that then I would definitely love to be involved.

"It would be incredible if that could lead to players coming through from Scotland."
O'Sullivan would love to see a renewed push for British talent in the sport and believes an intervention is required to keep up with the growth in China.
'I've seen what they do in China, I've seen what the runners do in Kenya, it's about time we do something in this country to give the kids a chance," he said, per the Times.

"We need to put some academies in place here. I'd love to see one in Wales, one in Scotland, one in England and one in Ireland. John Higgins can front one in Scotland, Mark Williams in Wales, me here, and maybe Ken Doherty in Ireland — or something like that. Get kids from as young as seven or eight, send them to the academy and get the kids playing.
"Life's tough in the UK for everybody so it's a good chance for youngsters to come to a safe place, learn a trade — that's what snooker is — and then we can do what China's doing, which is churning out champions.
"We're a bit thin on the ground with British talent, that's what I'm saying. It'd be helpful if we can get some academies over here. It might take ten, 15, 20 years, but we can do it.'
"I'd love to get behind it, I'd love to support it and put my name to it," he added. I don't know how you get funding, I really don't know, but it'd be good if we can. In China the government gets behind it and the same in Saudi Arabia, but I'm sure there's ways we can do it.
"We're really not looking at millions of pounds, we're looking at maybe a few hundred thousand. Just pay the rent, get maybe ten tables, a nice building where you've got enough space and pay a few coaches to go there. At least put the infrastructure in place to allow young kids to come in and get better at snooker."

Liverpool APPROVE British record Alexander Isak transfer with Marc Guehi also wanted in £165m double-deal

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) LIVERPOOL have sanctioned a British record £130million move for Alexander Isak next week – confident that Newcastle will finally let the wantaway striker leave. And they also still want to land Crystal Palace skipper Marc Guehi for £35m. Liverpool have already had one bid of £110m turned down for Swede Isak but will not make any official approach until after Monday's clash with Eddie Howe's Newcastle side. The atmosphere at St James' Park will already be hostile enough and the Reds do not want to inflame the situation any further. But they make their second move big for the striker who was frozen out of Toon by Howe for Saturday's 0-0 season opener at Villa Park. READ MORE SPORT STORIES EZE DOES IT Tottenham reach £60million agreement to sign Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace During that game the Toon Army chanted: 'There's only one greedy b*****d', to make their feelings known about a striker who has downed tools, refused to play and is to be fined for missing the Villa game. Their hero worship for the front man who has scored 62 goals in three seasons since signing from Real Sociedad for £63m has disintegrated into bitterness and spite. Isak will not only be left out again by Howe but, as things stand, he will not even attend the Liverpool clash. With Guehi - who appeared to snub Oliver Glasner after Sunday's draw at Chelsea - ongoing negotiations with Palace are understood to be amicable because Eagles chairman Steve Parish and Kop CEO of football Michael Edwards have a solid relationship. CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS There is increasing anxiety at Anfield over the stance of centre-back Ibrahima Konate who is refusing a new deal with only this season left on his current contract. He is keen to join former team mate Trent Alexander-Arnold at Real Madrid and Liverpool would consider selling this window or in January rather than let him leave for free next summer. 'That bothers me' - Jamie Carragher tells Liverpool NOT to sign £150million Alexander Isak from Newcastle Guehi, aged 25 like Konate, is seen as the ideal solution while the signings of him and Isak would create a world-record spend across any transfer window by any club - that mark currently held by Chelsea who forked out £391m in 2023. Slot told the Anfield hierarchy well before the end of last season that he saw Isak as central to the mega-spending masterplan of restructuring the squad that went on to claim the Premier League. That has not changed despite the arrival of £69m striker Hugo Ekitike from Frankfurt and him scoring in both the Community Shield and Prem opening-day win over Bournemouth. With sales expected to have topped £230m by the end of the transfer window, it is understood a decision has now been made to try to end that Isak saga by paying an extra £20m. A likely total price of £130m would also allow Newcastle to double their money on the 25 year old and save face on the sale they have grown to accept is becoming inevitable. Harvey Elliott, a £40m target for West Ham, could come into the equation in a part-exchange deal, depending on what choice the attacking midfielder makes. Howe made it clear after the Villa game that he wants the stand-off with Isak resolved as he continues his pursuit of Brentford's Yoane Wissa. 6 6 Newcastle are still desperate to land Brentford star Yoane Wissa to replace Isak Credit: Getty He stressed: 'We would like a resolution. I am talking about myself, I am sure the ownership, and the players. 'We need that clarity. You don't need any distraction. But I am not in control of that. I think only one person really (Isak) can control that.' SunSport understands that long-held discussions with Isak's representatives have ensured that personal terms will not be a problem. Newcastle have so far been reluctant to engage with Liverpool amidst attempts to first bring in replacements having lost out to Manchester United for Benjamin Sesko and, ironically, Liverpool for Ekitike. The Bees have now upped their valuation of Wissa from £40m to £60m but the DR Congo attacker – also left out at the weekend – is digging in for a move to the North East having removed all association with the club from his Instagram account. But Wissa is almost certain to get his wish - and a deal could even be struck before the weekend. 6 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW

Defender Burghley Horse Trials: Mutch praises Shanbeg Cooley

While Mutch concedes that Shanbeg Cooley will have his share of doubters, the Whitley Bay-based rider believes his noble steed will win plenty of new fans. 'I've had him now since he was a 5-year-old so I feel like we know each other inside out,' said Mutch, who has previously ridden the now-retired Bronze HD. 'He's the sort of horse that rises to the big occasions and loves a good challenge. I feel he is a proper 'Burghley' horse and it's exciting. 'Nothing's ever too much for him and it's nice to be able to take that out on a course. 'To be honest, I feel like he's still slightly under the radar because he had last year off and I feel people don't know too much about him yet. 'I wouldn't trade him for any other horse there because I feel he's one of the best jumpers at the circuit and one of the fastest in the world. 'I go to these events and see people riding for their lives to get the time and I can take my watch off and cruise around and I feel like I'll achieve it. 'That's not me trying to sound like it's easy but he's so unique because he's so careful and brave and that combination doesn't really mix at the top level.' One of two British eventing majors alongside Badminton Horse Trials, Defender Burghley regularly attracts the world's elite equestrians and Mutch admits he is bursting with anticipation. 'It is one of the true 5* events and you know you've turned up to the big one when you've arrived there,' added Mutch. 'There aren't many places in the world that you give the feeling it does. You just know you're at a special event and that you're in for a tough time. 'He [Shanbeg Cooley] went to Burghley two years ago as a nine-year-old when I didn't know what I was going get and so didn't have the perfect preparation for it. 'He still came out and gave me a serious ride around there so after two more years of preparation and getting him used to the top level, it will be really exciting to see how he finds it coming back.' Defender Burghley Horse Trials (4-7 September 2025) has been a major international sporting and social event for over 50 years. It attracts the world's top equestrians and is attended by vast and enthusiastic crowds. For more information visit

It comes after Nigeria's premier boxing promoter linked up with Khan's AK Promotions. ‌ The major fight night will take place in Lagos, Nigeria and will be broadcast live on DAZN. Khan - a former world champion and CEO of AK Promotions - said: "I'm thrilled to bring world-class boxing and the world's eyes onto Nigeria for the first time. This event is about more than just fights - it's about inspiring a new generation and showcasing the heart and skill of Nigerian boxers alongside international stars. Lagos is ready to shine." ‌ Dr. Ezekiel Adamu, CEO of Balmoral Group Promotions, added: "This historic fight night on Nigerian Independence Day marks a monumental moment for African boxing. We are proud to partner with AK Promotions to showcase Nigeria's immense talent and passion to the world, celebrating our heritage and potential on a global stage." Following the announcement, several big names are set to feature on the card, including Former WBA light-heavyweight title-holder Rocky Fielding, who will be taking on cruiserweight contender Brandon Glanton. Fielding, 38, has not fought since suffering a crushing defeat to Dan Azeez back in 2022. The defeat came four years after losing to 'Saul' Alvarez in a showdown for the WBA (Regular) super-middleweight title. Speaking of his return, Fielding said: "After three years out, I'm back with a fire to claim my place at the top. Beating Glanton in Lagos will show everyone I'm ready for a world title shot. The cruiserweight division is wide open, and I'm coming for it all." As for Glanton, the American is set to return for the first time since losing to Chris Billam-Smith on the undercard of Chris Eubank Jr vs Conor Benn back in April. In the co-main event, African legend and former IBF world champion Richard Commey - who has famously fought the likes of Vasyl Lomachenko and Teofimo Lopez - will take on Ray Seitzhanov. Former British, Commonwealth, and European champion Dan Azeez is also set to feature on the historic card. The event, titled 'Chaos in the Ring' marks the first time world-class boxing will be staged in Nigeria, with Khan declaring that the show will 'inspire a new generation' and shine a spotlight on African boxing talent. Earlier this year, Khan made the move into promoting his beloved sport after staging an event in Ghana. The former world champion relaunched AK Promotions for the event - which took place in June. The card saw heavyweight star Anthony Joshua in attendance, supporting the historic night of boxing and was even pictured with Khan - despite their feud.
