Man who ran fake finance company in Chembur arrested

Hindustan Times20-05-2025

MUMBAI: The police on Sunday arrested a Chembur resident who allegedly ran Access Fin Services, a fake finance company, to lure gullible people into investing in a fake scheme by promising them 10 to 20% returns. The accused, Praveen Obhan, had duped senior citizens who retired from government departments like the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and the police department by convincing them to invest their entire life's savings, said a police officer.
The case that led to his arrest was based on a complaint from one of his victims, Neelam Chiplunkar, a Chembur resident. Chiplunkar and her family are involved in the real estate business. In her complaint, she said a mutual friend introduced her and her husband to Obhan's firm, which they visited in July.
Obhan introduced them to various investment schemes, including one 'World cup special monthly investment scheme' in which a ₹40 lakh investment for 15 months will give investors ₹8 lakh returns beginning from the fourth month. At the end of a year, investors would be rewarded with ₹96 lakh. Lured by this, the complainant said she invested ₹40 lakh with Obhan's firm. He also gave a pamphlet of this scheme to the complainant so she could promote it, said a police officer.
'She claims to have given him ₹40 lakh after she was promised high interest, but she neither got any interest nor her principal amount,' said Navnath Dhawale, deputy commissioner of police (zone 6). However, in January this year, the accused gave her ₹4 lakh as returns and asked to further invest this in the 'Money bond daily scheme' (another fake scheme). He added that several people have submitted written complaints to the Govandi police in the past four to five days, making the alleged defrauded amount go up to around ₹2 crore.
The accused was produced before the court on Monday and remanded to police custody till May 23.

Turkey gets more punishment for supporting Pakistan as India cancels major deal with..., Modi govt teaching Erdogan lesson by...

(File) India Turkey relations: In another major move to punish Turkey for supporting Pakistan during the recent India-Pakistan conflict, Mumbai's Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has cancelled a major deal to to procure robotic lifebuoys from a Turkish robotics firm. Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani Monday said the Mumbai civic body has scrapped its plan to procure robotic lifebuoys manufactured in Turkey. The robotic lifebuoys, remotely-operated rescue machines designed to assist lifeguards in saving people from drowning, were to be deployed at the Girgaum Chowpatty, Shivaji Park Dadar, Juhu, Versova, Aksa and Gorai beaches in Mumbai, the BMC said, according to news agency PTI. Equipped with dual water jets powered by a 10,000 mAh rechargeable battery, each robotic lifebuoy unit had the load capacity of up to 200 kg, and could travel 800 metres into the sea at speeds up to 18 km/h and operate for about an hour, according to details. The BMC faced sharp criticism from politicians, including from the ruling BJP and its ally Shiv Sena, for its plan to buy these automated lifebuoys from Turkey in the wake of Ankara extended diplomatic and military support to Islamabad during last month's India-Pakistan military clash. Political leaders raised questions about why the civic body was procuring equipment from a foreign supplier instead of promoting indigenous alternatives. Turkey, Azerbaijan, and China, were the only country that openly supported Pakistan in its recent military confrontation with India which escalated after Indian armed forces conducted Operation Sindoor– a series of precision strikes on terrorist infrastructures inside Pakistan– to avenge the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Following Turkey's open support to Pakistan, India took a slew of measures to downgrade ties with Eurasian country, including cancelling major business deals with Turkish firms. RCB Event Tragedy Stirs Online Chatter On Bengaluru Vs Mumbai Crowd Control, BJP Joins Debate

Last Updated: Social media users criticized crowd management in Bengaluru after a stampede at Royal Challengers Bengaluru's victory parade left 11 dead, comparing it to Mumbai's success. As scenes from the stampede at Royal Challengers Bangalore's victory parade continue to circulate, social media is abuzz with comparisons between crowd management in Bengaluru and Mumbai. Several users questioned how Mumbai, which hosted large crowds during Team India's World Cup celebrations, avoided a similar tragedy. 'Today I realised Mumbai handled a ten times bigger crowd than Bengaluru and no innocent life was lost," wrote one user, tagging the Mumbai Police with salute and folded hands emojis. 'We all should value life. No game celebration is bigger than our lives." Another user echoed the sentiment, asking, 'How did Mumbai manage celebrations five times without any mishap, while Bengaluru couldn't handle even one?" The post blamed the Karnataka Congress government, district administration and police for the stampede, calling it a 'complete failure" in governance. How did Mumbai managed the celebration 5 times without any mishap while Bengaluru couldn't manage a single celebration . This is complete failure of the Karnataka Congress govt and the #Bengaluru district administration and police. The user added: 'This was no Olympic or national achievement, just a franchise league where players, owners and betters make crores." Another post drew a broader connection to social frustration, saying, 'While unemployment played a role in the Mumbai celebration, the tragic Bengaluru stampede has left many questioning accountability. Despite the devastating loss of lives, no one has stepped forward to take responsibility." Not a single life lost during the Mumbai T20 WC victory parade — and the crowd was nearly 5x bigger than in happened at the RCB celebration wasn't a tragedy,It was a clear failure of planning #RCB #Stampede #chinnaswamystadium #RCBvPBKS #ViratKohli???? — Bikram (@honestvikram) June 4, 2025 A third user criticised the public's role, saying that 'the public should be equally blamed" for attending in such numbers for 'a fixed tournament." The user added: 'This was no Olympic or national achievement, just a franchise league where players, owners and bettors make crores." Another post linked the incident to broader social frustration: 'While unemployment played a role in the Mumbai celebration, the tragic Bengaluru stampede has left many questioning accountability. Despite the devastating loss of lives, no one has stepped forward to take responsibility." Amid the online outrage, the BJP criticised the state government, accusing them of hastily organising the event without adequate police deployment or planning. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday slammed the Karnataka government for alleged mismanagement of RCB's IPL victory parade, after a stampede-like situation near Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium left eleven people dead and dozens injured. Karnataka BJP chief BY Vijayendra said the event lacked adequate preparation and police deployment. 'The state government, without any preparedness, should not have organised this today," he told reporters. 'If you saw the World Cup celebrations in Mumbai, it was planned with proper arrangements. Lakhs celebrated in Bengaluru last night. Why hold another event so soon and without preparation?" Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly, R. Ashoka, echoed the criticism, drawing comparisons with other Indian cities. 'It is very saddening. Cities like Mumbai and Kolkata also celebrated their teams' victories, but what are we seeing here in Bengaluru?" Chief Minister Siddaramaiah confirmed eleven deaths and thirty-three injuries. 'More than two to three lakh people came. No one expected this much crowd," he said during a press conference. He announced a magisterial inquiry and ₹10 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased. Deputy CM DK Shivakumar said the crowd overwhelmed security. 'They broke the gates. A lot of stampeding occurred," he said. 'We cancelled the procession from the airport and from Vidhana Soudha due to the overwhelming crowd and rain. Even at the stadium, we instructed the organisers to wind up the event in ten to fifteen minutes." He said the venue's capacity was 35,000, but over two lakh people attended.
