Pampered pets flying by private jet to avoid ‘cargo class' travel

Times21-04-2025

On the tarmac at Luton airport a Gulfstream private jet is parked. In the Signature Aviation terminal a group of very pampered passengers are waiting for the call to board. So far, just another day in the exclusive world of private aviation.
Until they prance out on their four legs, their golden hair blowing in the wind, their owners following behind. Welcome to executive pet travel.
The dogs and their owners are boarding an aircraft chartered by K9 Jets, a specialist pet aviation company founded in 2023 by Adam Golder, a former media advertising manager who identified a gap in the market.
He said: 'The cost of cargo shot up during the pandemic, by up to 400 per cent in some cases. There are about four million dogs shipped by cargo every year but the cost had gone through the roof.
'I was looking for a way to move into aviation and a friend told me that owners were getting together on Facebook to charter jets and share the cost between them.'
Golder saw an opportunity, one that would have K9 Jets charter the planes and sell the seats, taking away the stress and uncertainty from the owners.
He said: 'The issue with Facebook is there is a real risk of scammers. There was a lot of money floating around and always the concern it could disappear. There was clearly a demand for a company to take on the risk and handle the finances.'
It launched in March 2023 with an initial route between London and New Jersey. 'In one night we sold half a million dollar's worth of tickets,' Golder said. 'It was crazy.'
Today the company has flown more than 3,000 pets across the Atlantic and to Dubai. Other private jet outfits have also reported a surge in the number of people looking to book planes along with their furry friends.

As well as a leap in the cost of cargo space, pet owners — many of whom became inseparable from their pets during successive lockdowns — fear what might happen to pets shipped in the hold, where they can face fluctuating temperatures, poor ventilation and inappropriate handling.
• Private jets are booming in America. Could Europe be next?
VistaJet, a private aviation company, reported an 86 per cent increase in pet travel between 2019 and 2021. It said one in four of its passengers now travelled with a pet.
Last year BARK Air, a US operator that works on a similar model to K9 Jets, launched. It flies many domestic US routes but also some transatlantic routes. The company said it had taken the 'white glove experience typical of a human's first-class experience and redirected all that pampering to pooches'.
On K9 Jets, pets get a seat but the treats — and champagne — are reserved for their owners.
'There's an open bar and catering for the passengers, but we don't encourage the dogs to be fed,' Golder said. 'That's just from a toileting perspective. We've flown 3,000 pets and only had a handful of toilet accidents in that time.'
The London-New Jersey route remains the company's most popular and it flies three or four times a month. It also travels from New Jersey to Lisbon and Paris, as well as from London to LA, Toronto, Dubai and, launching in June, Miami.
Tickets from London to New Jersey cost $8,925 (£6,727) one-way, including the pet and its owner. The Gulfstream planes hold nine passengers and nine pets.
'Just the cargo costs of shipping an average golden retriever would be £5,000,' said Golder. 'And that's not [including] a seat for the owner which would be a few hundred quid more in economy.'
As a result, he said, many passengers were 'just average people that want the best for their pets, and would never want to put them in cargo'.
The most common reason for booking is people relocating for work, many of whom have a company contribution towards the cost of uprooting their lives.
'The lovely thing about it is that the passengers on board always have the same common theme,' Golder said. 'They love their pets and just want the best when getting from A to B.'

Economist notes points in Central Bank of Libya report

Central Bank of Libya Headquarters Economic analyst Mukhtar Al-Jadid stated that the Central Bank of Libya's report issued yesterday contains notable points requiring attention and analysis, though he postponed detailed discussion until after the Eid al-Adha holiday. In a Facebook post, Al-Jadid observed the inclusion of fuel expenditure figures for the first time in four years, noting this indicates the conclusion of the barter system previously in use. Al-Jadid linked the appearance of the fuel bill data to activities by advocates and individuals focused on public affairs through media and social media channels. He acknowledged their role in highlighting the matter. The analyst recognised those who participated in discussions about financial transparency and called for continued attention to such matters. The Central Bank of Libya operates within Libya's current political framework, with various institutions providing oversight of its functions. Legacy Building: Commune's Julian Koh on breathing new life into his family's furniture manufacturing business

Above When Koh first entered the industry, he faced a steep learning curve as he was unsure about the best way to run a retail business (Photo: Facebook / Commune) Breathing new life Koh shares that his elders were initially hesitant to venture into retail. 'They were saying how retail wasn't our game,' he explains, noting their uncertainty about investing in this new direction. Despite their reservations, Koh was determined to prove the value of the venture, taking gradual steps to demonstrate its potential. When Koh first entered the industry, he faced a steep learning curve as he was unsure about the best way to run a retail business. He started by designing products he believed would appeal to people's homes. His efforts were not in vain as customers quickly took interest in the brand, leading to the opening and expansion of retail stores in Singapore and China. Over the years, Commune has found its brand DNA, offering human-centric pieces that suit the needs of daily life. When it comes to designing pieces, Koh gets inspired by travel. '[I take time to travel to different exhibitions as well] just to know and feel the vibe of what people are doing and the trends moving forward,' he explains. Above Hegen 3-Way Stool from the Commune x Hegen collection (Photo: Facebook / Commune) Stronger together Collaboration is at the heart of Commune's philosophy. 'We always knew that there was synergy behind collaboration and what we can do to create something exciting,' Koh explains. Since its inception, the brand has partnered with a range of local and international brands, including homegrown mother and babycare brand Hegen, fashion brand Pedro and Singapore Airlines (SIA) to create unique and memorable collections. The collection preserves the essence of the iconic products by re-imagining retired SIA craft windows and carts. For example, the Continental Bar Cart transforms a galley cart with a sleek black powder-coated finish, elegant walnut veneer storage shelves and a premium leather utility pouch—giving these aviation staples a stylish new life. Beyond product collaborations, the brand is committed to fostering community. This inspired the creation of Commune Cafe, an extension of the Millenia Walk showroom. Designed with the same warm, contemporary aesthetic as the furniture showroom, the cafe serves as a social hub and a welcoming spot for customers to enjoy coffee before exploring the furniture collections. Above Looking ahead, Commune has ambitious plans for growth (Photo: Facebook / Commune) Staying open-minded When it comes to meeting the evolving needs of consumers, Koh emphasises that Commune maintains an open-minded approach, striving to understand and cater to a diverse range of demographics. This flexibility allows the brand to stay relevant and responsive in a rapidly changing market. Looking ahead, Commune has ambitious plans for growth. In addition to pursuing more collaborations with various brands, the homegrown company aims to expand its presence further in key international markets such as China and Europe, strengthening its global footprint. Driven by Koh and his family's deep passion for the furniture industry, Commune continues to push boundaries by creating sleek, elevated pieces designed for everyday living.

MTM Labo's Kelly Keak on the entrepreneurial lessons she learnt from her mother

Above Under Keak's leadership as managing director, MTM Labo continues to thrive (Photo: Facebook / MTM Labo) Getting to where the brand is today took time and commitment. Keak emphasises how their strong mother-daughter bond became a cornerstone of the business 'There's a level of trust and loyalty that you simply cannot manufacture. We both know we are working not just for business success, but for each other's dreams and our family's future,' she continues. Their close relationship, while a strength, can also lead to heightened emotions. However, their deep love and mutual respect always guide them back to a shared and unified path. 'It's a constant learning process,' Keak admits. 'We agreed early on that professional disagreements stay at work. At home, we are mother and daughter first. It helps that we genuinely value each other's opinions, even if we don't always agree.' No matter how tough the day gets, the duo is always assured that they have each other's backs. Below, Keak reflects on her journey working with her mother, lessons learnt and what Mother's Day means to her. Above Keak shares that her father has also been a strong pillar for them throughout the journey (Photo: Kelly Keak) What strengths do each of you bring to the table? My mother brings decades of deep industry knowledge, an amazing eye for detail, and a fierce commitment to quality, care (to both our internal team and our customers), ethics and values. I bring a younger perspective—fresh ideas in marketing, branding, and digital innovation. Our first foray into AI was in November 2023, with the incorporation of panoramic AI skin analysis with high-definition 3D imaging to our existing MAPS (MTM Labo's aesthetic profiling system). This provided a more comprehensive analysis and diagnosis of our customers' skin concerns over time. In March 2024, I introduced our AI Vita treatment, which incorporates the best practices of traditional Chinese and Western wellness philosophies with the pinpoint accuracy of AI. This treatment, using a very precise AI robotic arm, helps to boost circulation and metabolism starting from the womb, and also helps improve digestive health and immunity of reproductive system. Together, we balance tradition with innovation, which has been key to keeping our brand relevant. How do your generational perspectives show up in the business? You can see it everywhere, from the way we approach customer engagement to how we think about incorporating giving back into our everyday functions. We provide Chinese values education to our staff so that they can give equal care to our customers and their families. My mother taught me the importance of personal service and building relationships. I brought a focus on technology, digital marketing, and inclusivity. Combining both perspectives has allowed us to evolve while staying true to our roots and philosophy. Above MTM Labo's AI Vita treatment (Photo: Facebook / MTM Labo) Do you see this business as part of a family legacy? Definitely. This business is more than just a livelihood, it represents our family's perseverance, our values and our dreams. I hope to continue growing it in a way that honours my mother's hard work while adapting it for future generations to come. What have you learnt from each other while working together over the years? From my mother, I learned resilience and grit—the strength to keep going even when things seem impossible. She also taught me empathy, and that business should always come from a place of care. I think she has learned from me the importance of adapting to change and being open to new possibilities, even if they seem unconventional at first. Above MTM Labo's collection (Photo: Facebook / MTM Labo) What does Mother's Day mean to you now? Mother's Day is incredibly special to me. It's a reminder of all the sacrifices my mother made, not just for our family, but also for every client she's ever helped. Especially since I became a mother, I have learnt to appreciate her even more, understanding that she must have done and sacrificed so much for us, even if she did not mention them. Mother's Day, to me, is a celebration of strength, love, and the quiet, tireless dedication that often goes unseen. What is the best thing about working together? The best thing is knowing that no matter how tough the day gets, we have each other's unwavering support. It's incredibly meaningful to build something with someone who knows your heart completely. How would you describe each other as businesswomen? For my mother: Resilient. For me, I think she would say: A people person. Compassionate leader.
