Find the Heart of the Renaissance in Gorgeous Florence, Italy

Nestled in the heart of Tuscany, Florence is a city of firsts: it was the birthplace of the Renaissance, home to artistic geniuses like Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, and the spot where the powerful Medici family bankrolled the cultural explosion that changed Western civilization forever. Florence was at the heart of a revival of art and literature during the Renaissance, making its nickname 'Cradle of the Renaissance' well-earned.
So, it should come as no surprise that when it comes to destinations that blend history, art, and culture, few places can hold a candle to enchanting Florence. How lucky are we to have this Renaissance wonderland just a plane ride away? Florence is a wellspring of art and history, boasting the largest selection of Renaissance art in the world. Let's face it, your daytime adventures should absolutely include visits to these iconic spots. Next time you're there, experience the city in ways that will make your Instagram followers green with envy.
While it's true that many European cities have impressive cathedrals, the Florence Cathedral – formally known as the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Flower – remains among the most jaw-dropping architectural feats in the world. The massive dome designed by Filippo Brunelleschi towers over the city (it's literally the highest building in Florence) and gives the cathedral its nickname 'Il Duomo.' To get a sense of scale, the dome required over 4 million bricks to construct! The Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, located nearby, houses the original panels from Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise, adding another layer of historical significance to the site. Try the climb to the top – 463 steps of quad-burning exertion – where you'll witness views of the city that might be the most 'elevated' sightseeing you've ever experienced.
Los Angeles has Hollywood, New York has Broadway, but Florence? Florence has the Uffizi, a world-renowned museum housing an unparalleled collection of Renaissance masterpieces that's been wowing visitors since 1581. That's right – this museum was open before the Mayflower even set sail! The Uffizi Gallery is the oldest purpose-built art gallery in the world. If you've ever wanted to feel the raw emotional power of Botticelli's The Birth of Venus or the genius of Leonardo da Vinci's Annunciation, you have 'art' blanche to do so. The Italian Renaissance is on full display here, and trust me, seeing these masterpieces in person beats any art history textbook by a mile.
It's just a stone's throw from the Uffizi, AND it's one of the reasons Florence can claim superpower status in the art world: the famed Palazzo Vecchio, Florence's town hall. The landmark building, possibly the most-recognized civic structure in Italy, is cool, sure, but doesn't exactly warrant a 'once-in-a-lifetime' moniker – that is, until you step inside and see the mind-blowing frescoes and sculptures that adorn nearly every surface. The Palazzo Vecchio was home to Florence's magistrates during the Renaissance. Don't miss the Salone dei Cinquecento, a grand hall used for ceremonies that'll make your living room feel like a broom closet by comparison.
Florence is a city where art royalty reigns supreme, and the king himself stands tall in the Galleria dell'Accademia. That's where Michelangelo's 17-foot marble masterpiece David connects art enthusiasts with the genius of the Renaissance like no other sculpture can. The museum primarily showcases Italian Renaissance art from between 1300 and 1600, but let's be honest – you're there to see that perfectly chiseled hunk of marble that somehow looks more alive than most people you'll pass on the street. The Accademia Gallery was founded in 1784 as an art school, further cementing its role in Florence's artistic legacy.
Los Angeles has Rodeo Drive, New York has Fifth Avenue, but Florence? Florence has the Ponte Vecchio, a medieval bridge that's been the city's shopping hot spot since the 1400s. The landmark spans the Arno River and is lined with glittering jewelry shops that replaced the original (and probably much smellier) butcher shops. In addition to scoring some amazing finds, the bridge offers incredible views of the Arno. Florence is compact, making it possible to visit multiple museums and landmarks like the Ponte Vecchio in just a few days. To complement your journey through Italian cities, Exploring Venice and its iconic landmarks is another experience that shouldn't be missed.
It's just half a mile from the bustling city center, AND it's one of the reasons Florence isn't just about indoor art: the famed Boboli Gardens, a sprawling Renaissance garden that stands in as the Central Park of Florence. The landmark green space, possibly the most-recognized historic garden in Italy, allows for an entirely unique perspective of both cultivated nature and sculptural art. In addition, wandering through the terraced landscapes connects you with some amazing sights, including fountains, grottos and beautiful natural formations that offer an idyllic escape from the city's bustle. The Palazzo Pitti, located nearby, contains several museums, including the Galleria Palatina, making this area a treasure trove of art and history.
As the sun begins its descent, make your way to Piazza Michelangelo, where you'll witness what has to be one of the most breathtaking sunsets on planet Earth. While it's true the plaza was built in 1869 (practically yesterday by Florentine standards), the view from this vantage point is nothing short of magical. Try the 'Golden Hour Gathering' – when locals and tourists alike flock to this spot as the setting sun bathes the entire city in a warm glow – it might be the most share-worthy moment of your entire Italian adventure. Florentine culture encourages both personal and academic growth through its museums and historic sites, making moments like these even more enriching.
Florence is a treasure trove of Renaissance sights, with stunning architecture, world class museums and historic landmarks that tell the story of a cultural rebirth. From Michelangelo's David to the grandeur of the Florence Cathedral and the art in the Uffizi Gallery, every corner of the city is a must see for art lovers and history buffs. Whether you're strolling through the Boboli Gardens or crossing the Ponte Vecchio, Florence is an unforgettable journey into the heart of the Renaissance that still inspires the world today.

'The latest Race Across the World episode had one big problem'

Race Across the World series five has been an exciting ride so far but Wednesday's penultimate episode seemed to veer off track. Don't get me wrong, I loved the twist. Seeing last week's race leaders, Brian and Melvyn, open the checkpoint hotel book first — only to discover they were in fourth place. And a massive 17 hours behind. My heart sunk for them. Disappointed Brian sums it up perfectly in one word: "B*******." How this blow was delivered worked well on-screen... Only this is where I say the dreaded word "but". The latest episode was missing glimpses of the teams' journeys to the checkpoint. It is a race. I want to feel like I'm a passenger on the journey. That's one of the best things about race: vicariously travelling and feeling like you are part of the experience. I don't personally agree with some complaints online from viewers that the focus of the show has shifted to showing too much of "sob stories" instead of the journey. It's important to get to know the individuals taking part on the show and tell their extraordinary ordinary stories. That helps you choose who you are rooting for. But I did feel there wasn't enough racing which is particularly noticeable in this episode. (Note: this is my only grumbling complaint for the whole series.) There were too many jumps. We see Brian and Melvyn face a disaster while trying to leave the fancy vineyards in India. They are told on the phone: "Our office is closed today. But you can wait at the hotel, I'll send my representative in 45 minutes maximum". Then it cuts to them mysteriously arriving at Panjim. It was only upon revisiting the episode, I found the BBC snuck the answer into John Hannah's voiceover where they are trying to make up for the missing gaps. "After an 11-hour bus, Brian and Melvyn have arrived in Panjim," he quickly informs us before the brothers get into race mode to the checkpoint. Were there really no moments from the 11-hour bus journey really worth showing? And why did Brian and Melvyn choose to get the bus in the first place? This feels massive to miss out, especially as the previous race leaders are unlikely to win the show now. From behind the scenes, Brian on Instagram gives us more information: "That was a bit unfortunate. Started first, ended up last, 17 hours behind everybody. Maybe it was the vineyard. I don't know. It could have been maybe. We didn't catch a train, that might have been our mistake. But one more leg to go." Check out the telling photos from Race Across the World's final... Race Across the World's Fin and Sioned are seen prioritising travel on the final leg of the race. (BBC/Studio Lambert) Melvyn adds in a separate video on Instagram: "Unfortunate that one wasn't it? Was it the vineyard that took us out the way? I've just seen Brian's video and I kind of agree. I'm still trying to figure out how we ended up so far behind. The vineyard was a pleasant treat. The countryside was absolutely beautiful." It's not only Brian and Melvyn's journeys that are cut short. They all are. With Sioned and Fin, we know that a kind Indian stranger calls a taxi for them and it's going to cost them INR 6,000 (£51), including tolls. "He'll be waiting for us? Wow that's good. What a lovely guy," Fin says. Only we never see the teenage couple get into the taxi. And we don't see them navigate their way to checkpoint. We only see the disappointment they feel at coming third place at the checkpoint hotel. When it comes to Elizabeth and Letitia, the last time we see them before the checkpoint they are just northeast of Mumbai. "We are getting to checkpoint today," they jointly celebrate while getting onto the train. The voiceover tells us they are taking "advantage of the Indian rail network" but the rest of their journey remains a mystery. Six minutes later the sisters are back on screen magically opening the page of the book to find out they are in second place. We do know that current race leaders Caroline and Tom managed to miraculously get their seats confirmed for the train out of Mumbai. This is a surprise as Sioned and Fin had been warned by a local not to go via Mumbai to Goa because the train tickets are often booked up months in advance. But it is also a hint that Caroline and Tom are going to be accelerated into first place in the race. We do get to see moments of them running up the stairs in the glossy checkpoint hotel but the rest of their journey is glossed over. Maybe the answer is longer episodes or perhaps more episodes in the series to fit everything in. I hope the edit of the final captures everything we need to know about the last leg of the journey so we aren't left feeling cheated at the outcome. We all have our favourites watching at home but it's not really about who wins on Race Across the World. It's about the journey. Race Across the World's final airs at 9pm on Wednesday on BBC One.

Tarek and Heather Rae El Moussa Just Celebrated a MAJOR Relationship Milestone

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." Tarek and Heather Rae El Moussa are celebrating a fun milestone—and, no, it's not an addition to their blended family. And, no, it's also not yet another show on HGTV. Rather, the design duo just went on their very first work their parents. Over the weekend, the Selling Sunset alum posted a sweet reel documenting a business trip to Las Vegas with both her and Tarek's parents. The video showed clips of the entire fun-filled getaway: From boarding the plane, to watching Tarek at a speaking engagement, to taking full advantage of the city's lively entertainment and food scenes. And, in true high-roller fashion, there were many toasts over cocktails and wine. "Not our average Vegas trip," Heather Rae wrote on her post. "We got to show them a glimpse behind the scenes — our world, our work, and of course, the glam." The Flipping El Moussa star said bringing both families along made a typical work trip "extra special." Whether they're sharing glimpses of life with their kids or co-parenting with Christina Haack, Tarek and Heather Rae are all about family time, and the couple's many followers love to see it. "Love how close you are with your families," one fan wrote. "You can really see the love and support. Such a blessing!" "Family first," another wrote. "Y'all are the best!!" Even Haack commented, "So fun." Turns out, the El Moussas and Haack aren't the only ones who can navigate a modern family. Throughout the reel, Heather Rae and Tarek's parents were seen laughing and having lots of fun together, making a strong case for the integration of the two families. Some people say what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas; however, this impromptu family vacation was too much fun to keep to themselves. Viva Las Vegas! Follow on Instagram and TikTok.
