Army veteran proposes to girlfriend at Invictus Games in ‘gold medal moment'
James Cairns, from Holmfirth in Yorkshire, asked his girlfriend of four years Hannah Wild to marry him at the opening of the Team UK Wheelchair Basketball match in Vancouver on Sunday, the Royal British Legion said.
James, 35, celebrated the moment with his teammates, family, friends and he and Hannah's two-year-old son.
Since losing his leg to a sniper bullet in Afghanistan, James has been training for the Invictus Games and now competes in three sports: biathlon, swimming and wheelchair basketball.
James said: 'This is my gold medal moment.
'It has been months in the planning to keep it a secret.
'To compete for Team UK and then propose was just amazing. And she said yes!'
The seventh edition of the games, established by the Duke of Sussex in 2014, began in Vancouver on Saturday.
Harry and Meghan were at the opening ceremony, which had a star-studded line-up of performers including Nelly Furtado, Coldplay's Chris Martin and Katy Perry.
More than 500 competitors from 23 nations will take part in the games, which go on until Sunday February 16.
James and 61 other Team UK competitors, all veterans and serving personnel who were injured during service, departed for Canada earlier this week.
The games aim to 'inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and generate a wider understanding and respect for those who have served their country', the Royal British Legion said.
The Invictus Games were held in London in 2014, in Orlando in 2016, Toronto in 2017, Sydney in 2018, The Hague in 2022 and Dusseldorf in 2023.

Both are minor red flags, but enough to cause a bit of intrigue. After all, Sidwell has his hands in several situations in Port Charles, so why not this one? Maxie is Set to Exit GH It was announced that Kirsten Storms would be exiting the GH canvas for several months after she wrapped her scenes before summer break. This appears to be the beginning of that, as she is expected to be off-screen until later this year or early next year. She recently moved from Los Angeles to Nashville and is taking time to adjust to the change with her daughter, Harper. Millie Bobby Brown and Jake Bongiovi announce they've adopted their first child
LOS ANGELES — Millie Bobby Brown and Jake Bongiovi adopted a daughter, the first child for the married couple, this summer, they announced Thursday. 'We are beyond excited to embark on this beautiful next chapter of parenthood in both peace and privacy,' the couple wrote in a social media statement. No further details were released. Brown, 21, and Bongiovi, 23, were married in a private ceremony in May 2024. Representatives for Brown and Bongiovi did not immediately respond to The Associated Press' request for comment. Brown gained recognition for her starring role as Eleven in the Duffer brothers' sci-fi series 'Stranger Things.' The fifth and final season will air this November and December, a culmination of nine years of the show's production. The British actor has pursued other acting and business ventures in that time, including the Netflix original 'Enola Holmes' films and a 'Godzilla' film. She even released a romance book in 2023. Bongiovi is the son of Jon Bon Jovi, founder and frontman of the rock band Bon Jovi. Bongiovi debuted his own acting career as the star in 'Rockbottom,' which released last year.
